Collaborative Memory For Serial Order, Elizabeth Lauren Foreman Jan 2013

Collaborative Memory For Serial Order, Elizabeth Lauren Foreman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although the encoding, storage, and retrieval of information between groups has been examined in both recall and recognition memory; surprisingly, there is no existing data regarding collaborative memory outcomes using a reconstruction task. In an attempt to fill this gap in the literature, participants assigned to one of four retrieval conditions were asked to study the order of unrelated word-lists in preparation for a memory test. Some reconstructed the lists by alternating turns with their group members (turn-taking). Others were forced to reconstruct the lists from the first item-position to the last item-position in addition to taking turns with group …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Part A: Antimalarial Agents modified at the C-16 position of Artemisinin. Malaria is a widespread tropical and subtropical parasitic disease which is caused by malarial parasites and transmitted by the infected anopheles mosquitoe. The natural product artemisinin and its derivatives are currently considered the most effective drugs against drug resistant plasmodium falciparum. However, its undesired physicochemical proprieties have limited its usage. In order to improve its effectiveness, scientists around the world have developed novel methodology to synthesize artemisinin derivatives on different positions of the artemisinin skeleton. Previous work in our group has shown that many analogues modified at the C-16 …

Evaluating Preference-Seeking And Aversive Qualities Of Salvia Divinorumand Mitragyna Speciosa, Melissa Jane Loria Jan 2013

Evaluating Preference-Seeking And Aversive Qualities Of Salvia Divinorumand Mitragyna Speciosa, Melissa Jane Loria

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Use of botanicals for self-diagnosed conditions or recreational purposes is increasing. Many readily available botanicals are under-researched and little is known about potential liabilities. This study sought to utilize Conditioned Place Preference (CPP) to quantify rewarding or aversive properties of botanicals and their constituents in rats. This paradigm is based on the notion that animals prefer distinct environments previously paired with rewarding drugs. Our approach to broadly characterize a botanical and its many constituents entails dose response functions of a plant extract, its fractions, and its primary constituent. As a proof of concept, we chose two popular botanicals, one expected …

Phylogeography Of The Malagasy Ant Species Otontomachus Coquereli, Jason Jackson Jan 2013

Phylogeography Of The Malagasy Ant Species Otontomachus Coquereli, Jason Jackson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Madagascar is an extremely diverse and geographically complex area boasting levels of endemism that blatantly raise questions about their origins. There is evidence that these endemics arose via insitu diversification during Madagascar's ~88 million year isolation, even though it was essentially in the middle of Gondwana with ample opportunity to acquire inhabitants. Madagascar's high levels of diversity and endemism make it an ideal location to study speciation, especially considering the evidence that such high levels speciation occurred in Madagascar itself. Several hypotheses have been formulated to relate the complex geography to genetic divergence, and thereby speciation. I explore three hypotheses …

Linking The Functional Diversity Of Ectomycorrhizal Fungal Species To Soil Carbon And The Genetics Of A Foundational Tree Species, Nicole Marie Hergott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere continues to increase, leading to an enhanced interest in the potential for ecosystems to sequester carbon. Soil could have a high potential to store carbon in these forests, but there is still a great deal to learn about how carbon storage in soils is influenced by ectomycorrhizal fungi. In this symbiosis, the plant host provides the vast majority of C for fungal growth. As a consequence, ECM fungi may provide one of the major pathways for C from trees to soils. Ectomycorrhizal fungal species produce extracellular enzymes that may degrade soil carbon and may differ …

Molecular Modeling And Sar Studies Of Cdk5/P25 Selective Inhibitors, Arindam Chatterjee Jan 2013

Molecular Modeling And Sar Studies Of Cdk5/P25 Selective Inhibitors, Arindam Chatterjee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most dreaded forms of progressive neurodegenerative diseases. The two main hallmarks of AD are the formation of amyloid senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. Cyclin dependent kinase 5 (CDK5) is a proline directed serine/threonine kinase, which expressed primarily in the central nervous system. In the biochemical process the CDK5-natural activator, p35 is cleaved by calpain to a shorter protein p25, which in turn hyperphosphorylates Tau, forms neurofibrillary tangles and causes AD. CDK5 deregulation is also indicated in other neurodegenerative diseases, such as Huntington's chorea, stroke, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, major depression and substance …

Sediment Control In Alluvial Rivers Using Simulation-Based Optimization, Moustafa Abdelkader Elgohry Jan 2013

Sediment Control In Alluvial Rivers Using Simulation-Based Optimization, Moustafa Abdelkader Elgohry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During storm events in rivers and watersheds, the peak runoff may creates excess erosion and deposition in channels or river reaches and cause changes in flow characteristics and fluvial geomorphology. Severe sediment erosion such as in-stream sever bed and bank erosion or gullying can threaten the stability of in-stream hydraulic structures, river banks, levees, and underground utilities. On the other hand, large amounts of sediment deposition can significantly reduce the flow capacity of channel or reservoir and increases further possibility of flooding. Therefore, sediment control is generally required for rivers and watersheds conservation purposes to maintain stable flow systems in …

Partial Replica Location And Selection For Spatial Datasets, Yun Tian Jan 2013

Partial Replica Location And Selection For Spatial Datasets, Yun Tian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As the size of scientific datasets continues to grow, we will not be able to store enormous datasets on a single grid node, but must distribute them across many grid nodes. The implementation of partial or incomplete replicas, which represent only a subset of a larger dataset, has been an active topic of research. Partial Spatial Replicas extend this functionality to spatial data, allowing us to distribute a spatial dataset in pieces over several locations. We investigate solutions to the partial spatial replica selection problems. First, we describe and develop two designs for an Spatial Replica Location Service (SRLS), which …
