Using Diverse Children's Literature To Enhance Social Emotional Learning, Lashana T. Middleton Jan 2023

Using Diverse Children's Literature To Enhance Social Emotional Learning, Lashana T. Middleton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study focused on examining the use of diverse children's literature and social-emotional learning (SEL) curricula to enhance the social-emotional competence skills of Pre-K students in general education classrooms. Understanding and developing these skills during early childhood has been shown to be essential for healthy child development, and early education teachers play a critical role in this process. The findings from this study suggest that while teachers have a positive view and awareness of the theoretical foundations of SEL, they may need additional training and support to effectively implement and incorporate SEL strategies in their practices. Specifically, the study highlighted …

Many of the priorities of Grafton’s ministry corresponded to those …

Teachers' Experiences Implementing The 2018 Mississippi College And Career Readiness Standards For Science, Lydia Lytal

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Teachers have had to use standards to teach with since the 1980’s. The CCRS has made a significant shift in how standards are written and the expectations of students in learning them. With the three-dimensional design, teachers are required to change their pedagogy in order to implement the standards with fidelity. That requires training, support, and resources for the teachers. The purpose of this study was to provide insight in the experiences of high school teachers in Mississippi as they implemented the standards. Additionally, the researcher revealed emotions related to implementation and differences related to teachers in a tested subject …

The Presence And Prevalence Of Underqualified High School Science Teachers In Mississippi, Shelby Ann Watson Jan 2023

The Presence And Prevalence Of Underqualified High School Science Teachers In Mississippi, Shelby Ann Watson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With growth in STEM postsecondary programs and careers positioned as a national priority, ensuring that K-12 science classrooms are staffed with highly qualified teachers is an important step towards building student interest in STEM and preparing students for STEM careers. However, previous studies of out-of-field teaching have indicated that schools and districts across the country are hiring large numbers of underqualified teachers to fill high-needs positions, such as secondary science and mathematics. Complicating the issue is the fact that data regarding teacher shortages, vacancies, and underqualified teaching are often incomplete or inaccessible. Prior studies have found that underqualified teaching is …

"Agitate, Agitate, Agitate": Stories From Mississippi Valley, Parchman, And The Largest Mass Arrest Of Students In U.S. History, Katherine Aberle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the midst of the turbulent and sometimes violent unrest culminating in the fatal shootingsat Kent State University and Jackson State College in 1970, there is another story of black student activism that has been all but erased from public memory. In February 1970, the largest mass arrest of students in U.S. history took place at a relatively obscure small-town college in the Mississippi Delta. That winter, enrollment at Mississippi Valley State College was barely 2000 students, but on February 11, 1970, almost 900 students, nearly half the student population at the historically black college, would be arrested and find …

Queer Subculture In The Conservative South: A Study Of Drag Performers In Mississippi, Christina Alison Huff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The amount of research on Mississippi LGBTQ communities is scarce. It is well established that ethnographic research on rural Southern queer communities is lacking, and that most LGBTQ research is conducted in metropolitian areas in the northern and western areas of the United States. This study investigates the lives of Mississippi drag performers through films, photographs, and audio documentaries. Specifically, these primary sources demonstrate that many LGBTQ members are thriving in historically conservative rural Southern areas by carving out spaces for their own existence.

A War Of Ideas: L.Q.C. Lamar And American Political Thought, Ashley Steenson Jan 2020

A War Of Ideas: L.Q.C. Lamar And American Political Thought, Ashley Steenson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis connects late nineteenth-century southern Democrat and former Confederate L.Q.C. Lamar to the status politics of the Northeastern “small imperialist elite.” Moreover, this work traces Senator, Secretary of the Interior, and Associate Justice Lamar’s legacies in American political thought, such as a regional memorialization and the example of his national influence through the policies of President Theodore Roosevelt specifically. Though he inspired generations of politicians with varying views, Lamar himself maintained a strict constructionist political philosophy and worked for home rule throughout his career. Scholars argue for Lamar as a moderate symbol of national reconciliation due to his eulogy …

Instant Schools: The Frenzied Formation And Early Days Of The Mississippi Private School Association, Ernest Flora Iv

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The founding leadership of the Mississippi Private School Association (MPSA) used individual experience and extensive networking via the Citizens’ Council along with the community’s belief and desire to maintain white-only schools to create a coalition of quickly formed but well-resourced private schools. This political and social clout afforded them the ability to create a large, powerful organization almost “instantly” during a pivotal moment of southern educational history. Scholar Kenneth T. Andrews called the establishment of all-white academies in Mississippi, “a countermovement strategy that floout of the prior history of organized white resistance to the civil-rights movement.” The significance of this …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Between 1790 and 1840, the U.S. federal government instituted its so-called “civilization plan,” which encouraged Southern Indians to embrace republican values, patriarchy, yeoman farming, and individual property rights. The policies included in the civilization plan were highly influential, as the Native South transitioned from an economy built on the deerskin trade into one of cottage industries, plow-based agriculture, and ranching. Through a detailed examination of one Southern Indian community, the Chickasaws, my dissertation defines the civilization plan in terms of the ideology that the federal government envisioned and how the plan was interpreted on the ground level. Examining Hope And Resilience Among Mississippi Adolescents, Kristie Vail Schultz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hope theory involves the way in which individuals perceive their abilities in relation to three factors: 1) clearly defined goals, 2) the specific strategies necessary to obtain those goals (called “pathways”), and 3) the sustained motivation necessary to use those specific strategies (called “agency thinking”) (Snyder et al., 1991; Snyder, Lopez, Shorey, Rand, & Feldman, 2003).
