Fgf2 Maintains The Proliferation Of Neural Progenitors By Actively Suppressing The Cki P27kip1 Through Regulation Of Cks1b Transcription, Andrew J. Darr
Open Access Dissertations
Identifying the mechanisms that regulate neural precursor cell (NPC) proliferation and differentiation is important for understanding CNS development among different vertebrates. My work has focused specifically on understanding how mitogenic factors, like basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF2), regulate the NPC cell cycle. Mitogenic factors and serum are thought to drive cell cycle and therefore proliferation mainly by activating G1-type cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs). The general hypothesis being addressed here is that FGF2 also promotes cell cycle progression of NPCs through the degradation of the cell cycle inhibitor p27Kip1. I show that, in the presence of FGF2 in vitro, embryonic rat cortical …

The Influence Of Jazz Harmony And Jazz Style On Selected Bass Trombone Solo Literature, Joel Andrew Keene
The Influence Of Jazz Harmony And Jazz Style On Selected Bass Trombone Solo Literature, Joel Andrew Keene
Open Access Dissertations
The development of solo literature for the bass trombone came relatively late in the history of instruments. Though the development of solo literature for this instrument and the birth and development of jazz occurring at the same time in history may be coincidental, the influence of one on the other is undeniable. Because of the large percentage of solo bass trombone literature that is influenced by jazz due to this coincidence, it is necessary that even a classically trained bass trombonist include jazz as a part of the study curriculum. In order to exemplify the influences of jazz harmony and …

White cement has currently received increasing attention due to potential for use in sustainable concrete structures. Based on the U.S. Green Building Council certification practice, the LEED Green Building Rating System for New Construction and Major Renovation (LEED-NC) considers that the reflective quality of white surfaces may help to improve lighting efficiency and reduce temperature fluctuations, resulting in lower heating and cooling with reduction of related energy costs. In addition to the environmental impact, white concrete represents a valuable tool for the aesthetic acceptability of a structure, and can also offer important practical benefits in terms of safety (i.e., light …
Modernizing Nationalism: Masculinity And The Performance Of Anglophone Caribbean Identities, Nadia Indra Johnson
Modernizing Nationalism: Masculinity And The Performance Of Anglophone Caribbean Identities, Nadia Indra Johnson
Open Access Dissertations
This study examines Anglophone Caribbean national identities to interrogate multiple and varied economies that manage citizens in the interest of economic and social production and/or the policing of national identities. It is particularly concerned with the gendered character of these economies. The formation and preservation of these national identities rely heavily on gender and sexual difference as Anglophone Caribbean national identities are inextricably linked to expressions of Afro-Caribbean masculinity. Thus I analyze novels and cultural representations of Afro-Caribbean masculinity in cricket, calypso and chutney-soca music in Trinidad's carnival. I also examine Afro-Caribbean religions, Revivalism and Rastafarianism, as well as Afro-Caribbean …

Behavior Of Full-Scale Reinforced Concrete Members With External Confinement Or Internal Composite Reinforcement Under Pure Axial Load, Antonio De Luca
Open Access Dissertations
The need to satisfy aerospace industry's demand not met by traditional materials motivated researchers and scientists to look for new solutions. The answer was found in developing new material systems by combining together two or more constituents. Composites, also known as fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) consisting of a reinforcing phase (fibers) embedded into a matrix (polymer), offered several advantages with respect to conventional materials. High specific modulus and strength together with other beneficial properties, corrosion resistance and transparency to electrical and magnetic fields above all, made FRP also suitable for use as construction materials in structural engineering. In the early …

A Comparison Of Adjacent Categories And Cumulative Dsf Effect Estimators, Karina A. Gattamorta
A Comparison Of Adjacent Categories And Cumulative Dsf Effect Estimators, Karina A. Gattamorta
Open Access Dissertations
The study of measurement invariance in polytomous items that targets individual score levels is known as differential step functioning (DSF; Penfield, 2007, 2008). DSF methods provide specific information describing the manifestation of the invariance effect within particular score levels and therefore serve a diagnostic role in identifying the individual score levels involved in the item's invariance effect. The analysis of DSF requires the creation of a set of dichotomizations of the item response variable. There are two primary approaches for creating the set of dichotomizations to conduct a DSF analysis. The first approach, known as the adjacent categories approach, is …
Manipulating Embryonic Neural Precursor Cells For Therapeutic Transplantation Into A Rat Model Of Neuropathic Pain, Orion Furmanski
Manipulating Embryonic Neural Precursor Cells For Therapeutic Transplantation Into A Rat Model Of Neuropathic Pain, Orion Furmanski
Open Access Dissertations
Persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) suffer life-long consequences including paralysis, loss of involuntary bodily functions, and chronic pain. A subset of SCI patients develop neuropathic pain (NP), a chronic condition resulting from damage to the spinal cord. Hyperexcitability of spinal cord sensory neurons near damaged tissue is believed to underlie SCI-related NP. Although many therapies have been employed clinically to combat SCI-NP, few give satisfactory long-term relief. Transplantation of cells that release GABA, a molecule that inhibits neuronal activity, is being explored as an alternative to current SCI-NP therapies. My experiments made progress toward preclinical modeling of GABA cell …
A Multi-Model Approach To Predicting Pathogen Indicator Bacteria Loading In Tmdl Analyses, Donna-May G. Sakura-Lemessy

Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation utilizes data from four sub-watersheds in the Little River Experimental Watershed, GA to develop models to improve forecast predictions related to the management of surface-water pollution due to non-point source runoff. Non-point source pollution is the primary cause of US surface-water quality impairment and a main transport mechanism for pathogens and other pollutants into receiving surface water bodies (US EPA 2008). In response to pollution reduction and watershed remediation mandates under the Federal Clean Water Act (1972)-particularly the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) program-the role of water quality modeling in effectively rehabilitating impaired waters has taken on greater …

Marc-Antoine Charpentier's setting of the Messe pour Monsieur Mauroy is the only composition in his oeuvre which was dedicated to a particular person. Each of Charpentier's twelve mass settings is unique; this mass setting is his longest at over 1,500 measures. Charpentier masses are diverse: one composition for women's voices, a mass for instruments only, a Christmas mass, as well as settings of the Requiem text. This document traces the history of the missa concertata up until the time of Charpentier. It examines the intricacies of Charpentier's compositional process: form, melody, harmony, and self-borrowing. This paper also analyzes recent findings …
On The Response To Tropical Cyclones In Mesoscale Oceanic Eddies, Benjamin Jaimes
On The Response To Tropical Cyclones In Mesoscale Oceanic Eddies, Benjamin Jaimes
Open Access Dissertations
Tropical cyclones (TCs) often change intensity as they move over mesoscale oceanic features, as a function of the oceanic mixed layer (OML) thermal response (cooling) to the storm's wind stress. For example, observational evidence indicates that TCs in the Gulf of Mexico rapidly weaken over cyclonic cold core eddies (CCEs) where the cooling response is enhanced, and they rapidly intensify over anticyclonic warm features such as the Loop Current (LC) and Warm Core Eddies (WCEs) where OML cooling is reduced. Understanding this contrasting thermal response has important implications for oceanic feedback to TCs' intensity in forecasting models. Based on numerical …
Correlation Between High Resolution Sequence Stratigraphy And Mechanical Stratigraphy For Enhanced Fracture Characteristic Prediction, Laiyyan M. Al Kharusi
Correlation Between High Resolution Sequence Stratigraphy And Mechanical Stratigraphy For Enhanced Fracture Characteristic Prediction, Laiyyan M. Al Kharusi
Open Access Dissertations
Sequence stratigraphy relates changes in vertical and lateral facies distribution to relative changes in sea level. These relative changes in carbonates effect early diagenesis, types of pores, cementation and dissolution patterns. As a result, in carbonates, relative changes in sea level significantly impact the lithology, porosity, diagenesis, bed and bounding surfaces which are all factors that control fracture patterns. This study explores these relationships by integrating stratigraphy with fracture analysis and petrophysical properties. A special focus is given to the relationship between mechanical boundaries and sequence stratigraphic boundaries in three different settings: 1) Mississippian strata in Sheep Mountain Anticline, Wyoming, …

April (Tnfsf13) In Th1, Th2 And Th17 Responses, Yanping Xiao
Open Access Dissertations
The T cell function of a proliferation inducing ligand (APRIL or TNFSF13) remains unclear. By comparing APRIL-/- mice with wild type (WT) mice, we have investigated the roles of APRIL in Th1, Th2 and Th17 responses. With regard to APRIL in Th1 responses, cultured APRIL-/- CD4+ T cells showed increased IFN-gamma production under non-polarizing, but not under Th1 polarizing, conditions. No difference in antigen-specific IgG2a levels existed between APRIL-/- and WT mice immunized with ovalbumin (OVA) and complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) which induces Th1 polarization. Our data indicate that APRIL represses Th1 responses only under non-polarizing conditions. As for APRIL …

Biology Of Amacrine Cells And Retinal Ganglion Cells In The Developing Retina, Noelia J. Kunzevitzky
Open Access Dissertations
How do neighboring neurons differ? How are they similar? How do they relate to each other? Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and amacrine cells are born during the same developmental window, from the same population of progenitor cells, and some amacrine cells even migrate to the same retinal layer where RGCs reside, the ganglion cell layer. Amacrine cells are presynaptic to RGCs, whose axons subsequently project through the optic nerve and carry visual information to the brain. Although the cell biology of RGCs has been studied in some detail, relatively little is known about the cell and molecular biology of amacrine …
