The Impact Of Task Difficulty On Reading Comprehension Intervention With Computer Agents, Ying Fang Jan 2019

The Impact Of Task Difficulty On Reading Comprehension Intervention With Computer Agents, Ying Fang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

According to Vygotskys zone of proximal development (ZPD), students benefit from tasks that are difficult but can be achieved with the guidance of a skilled partner. This concept has often been implemented during the development of intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs), but there remains a need to empirically investigate the validity of this concept in reading comprehension interventions. Individual differences need to be considered in order to assign tasks to individual students with the right level of difficulty. Mixed results have emerged from previous research that specifically investigated the potential interaction between student attributes and ITSs on learning in the domain …

The Role Of Source Monitoring In Resolving Cognitive Disequilibrium On Texts With Controversial Topics, Shi Feng Jan 2018

The Role Of Source Monitoring In Resolving Cognitive Disequilibrium On Texts With Controversial Topics, Shi Feng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigated the effects of text position (i.e. the position that the author of the text who argues in support of a controversial issue), agent roles (tutor versus student), and agent speech acts on source monitoring and how these factors impact memory for information in a learning environment with conversational agents. Previous research on learning from text with conversational agents has supported the claim that agent disagreements stimulate a state of cognitive disequilibrium and confusion in the participants, which leads to deep learning when resolved. Source monitoring is one plausible strategy to resolve conflict engendered from cognitive disequilibrium. This …

The Long-Term Effects Of Diet And Exercise On Working Memory Performance In Long-Evans Rats, John Jay Macdonnchadh Apr 2016

The Long-Term Effects Of Diet And Exercise On Working Memory Performance In Long-Evans Rats, John Jay Macdonnchadh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Concerns about the dietary and exercise behaviors of individuals in the United States and other Western nations have come under more scrutiny lately. The literature is beginning to show the deleterious effects that poor dietary choices and physical inactivity can have on working memory performance. This study used a sample of 28 male Long-Evans rats to examine the effects that two different diet conditions (beginning at 6 weeks of age) as well as two different exercise conditions (beginning at 12 weeks of age) had on working memory performance. Automated operant conditioning boxes were used to examine working memory on a …

Intermittent Testing Reduces Proactive Interference In Multiple Document Comprehension, Rebecca Marie Mccabe Apr 2016

Intermittent Testing Reduces Proactive Interference In Multiple Document Comprehension, Rebecca Marie Mccabe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current research examined whether proactive interference (PI)—when old knowledge interferes with the learning of, and memory for, new knowledge—occurred when reading several argumentative texts on the same topic. We also examined whether retrieval practice could successfully reduce PI in this setting. In Experiment 1, participants read either eight or 24 texts on the same topic; some who read 24 texts completed retrieval practice on the first 16. All participants completed a distractor task, then a final free recall of the texts that they read. Experiment 2 explicitly measured memory for supporting evidence and sources, altered the final recall task …

A Comparison Of Concept Maps And Text Summaries: The Effects Of Study Format On Memory, Kenneth James Barideaux Jr. May 2014

A Comparison Of Concept Maps And Text Summaries: The Effects Of Study Format On Memory, Kenneth James Barideaux Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A large body of research has provided evidence that concept maps offer a greater benefit for learning compared to traditional text (e.g., Nesbit & Adesope, 2006). Reder and Anderson (1980) compared text summaries to full-length texts and found text summaries to be more beneficial for learning, suggesting that details and elaborations can hurt retention. The current research compared concept maps and text summaries in two experiments. In Experiment 1, participants studied a science topic from a concept map or text summary. Immediately following study, all participants completed a concept map posttest and text summary posttest where the arrangement of both …

An Urban Cemetery: Weaving An Architectural Thread Between The Sacred And The City, Anthea J. Selkirk Apr 2014

An Urban Cemetery: Weaving An Architectural Thread Between The Sacred And The City, Anthea J. Selkirk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Death is a taboo subject in our society and our cemeteries are a reflection of our collective repression of the idea of death. Contemporary culture has desacralized our built enviroment by moving our sacred cemeteries from the center of the city, to the outskirts where they are forgotten about. Is there still a place for the cemetery in everyday life? If so, how does one create a place that speaks equally to the aspects of life and death? This thesis is based on the conviction that burial grounds can be integrated into everyday life, and that there should be a …

Anthropomorphism Appeals: Influencing Consumer Attitudes And Memory Through Humanlike Presentation, Phillip Michael Hart Apr 2013

Anthropomorphism Appeals: Influencing Consumer Attitudes And Memory Through Humanlike Presentation, Phillip Michael Hart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Advertisements in which a good or service is portrayed as humanlike in one or more ways (i.e., anthropomorphism appeals) are commonplace, yet scarecely investigated. In this state, managers using anthropomophism appeals are left to wager pomotional budgets without knowledge of the impact these appeals have on viewers or the factors most frequently influencing these appeals. The present study addresses this limitation by evaluating the advertising effectiveness of anthropomorphism appeals and the roles of contextual (product type and product category) and individual (loneliness and product knowledge) factors. Using an online panel service, three experiments evaluated the effectiveness of anthropomorphism appeals at …
