This history of Mount Desert Island, Maine and Acadia National Park examines the issues and conflicts that arose as Mount Desert Island and the town of Bar Harbor grew from a quiet coastal village into a resort community. By tracing the developmental history of the island, this work places the creation of the national park within the context of decades of preceding development of the community as a tourist attraction.
