Cbt Group Intervention To Increase Cpap Adherence Among Veterans With Sleep Apnea: A Pilot Investigation, Katie Patricia Lang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sleep Apnea (SA) is gaining increased attention among military populations due to the increasing prevalence rates (40-60%) and risk of serious health complications (i.e., cognitive decline, stroke) when untreated. Unfortunately, adherence to Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP; the gold standard treatment) is chronically low. This study examined the efficacy of a 6-week CBT group intervention to increase CPAP adherence among veterans diagnosed with SA and prescribed CPAP treatment. A final sample of 35 veterans was randomly assigned either to treatment as usual (TAU) or TAU plus the CBT group intervention. Participants completed various self-report measures and a therapist-administered cognitive screening …

Situating The Self: Identity And Power Relationships In A Pakistani Esl Classroom, Rooh Ul Amin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In Pakistani universities, English plays the key role in students’ upward academic and social mobility; however students do not always enter universities with equal English language skills. This study, therefore, extensively explores the relationship between English language learners’ (ELLs) access to English via prior schooling (public vs. private), participation in classroom discourses and negotiation of identities and power relationships as situated social processes. Informed by Bourdieu’s concept of cultural capital and cultural reproduction complemented with the communities of practice (CoP) approach, this study explores how ELLs’ identity and power relationships in an ESL classroom are shaped by (un)limited cultural capital—the …

Is Politics Really A Man's Game? Women As Political Recruiters And Participants, Anna Phillips Talley Dec 2015

Is Politics Really A Man's Game? Women As Political Recruiters And Participants, Anna Phillips Talley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Women are assumed to participate less often, and less effectively than men. Looking at the way women recruit others to participate, and their participation in protest activity, women seem to be as effective as men. As recruiters, men and women tend to recruit others of their gender, and due to the way women have been historically excluded, there are fewer women in politics who can recruit others to participate. Although they recruit as effectively as men, women are less likely to already be in positions of power that allow them to recruit. These structural barriers to participation reflect structural problems, …

Haunted By History: Specters Of The Past In Literature Of The Global South, April Kathleen Lenoir

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project argues that the shared history of slavery, imperialism, and the plantation manifests in 20th Century literature from both the Caribbean and the Southern United States as a haunting and ghostly presence. I utilize both canonical and less well-known authors, with a particular focus on female authors. Authors from both regions write stories of people and places haunted by history as a way to confront the ghosts of slavery and the plantation to allow them a future free of ghosts. Overall I bring together texts that have not been previously read together to show connections between literature of the …

Refugees, Migrants, And Terrorists: German National Identity And The Social Construction Of Vietnamese And Mediterranean Boat People, Yves Mai Orsino Dec 2015

Refugees, Migrants, And Terrorists: German National Identity And The Social Construction Of Vietnamese And Mediterranean Boat People, Yves Mai Orsino

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the eruption of the Mediterranean crisis, European states have taken a tougher stance on admitting refugees and asylum seekers despite the fact that Europe is the original architect of the international humanitarian regime. This shift from a historically Open Europe to the Fortress Europe is particularly pronounced in Germany. Accordingly, this thesis explores why Germany has suggested more restrictive policies toward the Mediterranean refugees today when it had responded generously during the Indochinese crisis. I argue that Germany's differential responses to the Indochinese and Mediterranean refugee crises reflect its construction of the foreign groups as either assets or liabilities …

Improved Value For Load Increase Factor In Progressive Collapse, Yousef Ghaffari Dec 2015

Improved Value For Load Increase Factor In Progressive Collapse, Yousef Ghaffari

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Progressive collapse is a situation when one or more key structural elements fail resulting in the failure of adjoining structural elements and, in return, leading to partial or total collapse of the entire building. One method of reducing the likelihood of a progressive collapse situation is to have structures designed with high redundancy so that a higher level of force distribution can take place after the failure of key structural elements. For an accurate evaluation of the structural behavior in a progressive collapse scenario, a nonlinear dynamic analysis (NDA) that considers the geometric and material nonlinearity should be conducted. The …

Cerebellar Dopaminergic Signaling In The Dorsomedial Striatum Of Fragile-X Mice: Significance To Autism Spectrum Disorders, Zade Ramses Holloway Dec 2015

Cerebellar Dopaminergic Signaling In The Dorsomedial Striatum Of Fragile-X Mice: Significance To Autism Spectrum Disorders, Zade Ramses Holloway

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are characterized by motor impairments and deficits in social communication potentially stemming from cerebellar Purkinje cell loss and dysfunction. Recent mapping of glutamatergic and dopaminergic pathways has provided evidence that degeneration of Purkinje cells coincides with attenuated dopamine (DA) release in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) via the cerebello-thalamo-PFCpathway. As patients with ASD exhibit repetitive behavior, abnormal reward processing, and lack of planning ability, it appears the effects of neuropathology in the cerebellum extend to the nigrostriatal pathway. Using fixed-potential amperometry and electrical stimulation of cerebellar nuclei, we investigated the possibility that the cerebellum modulates DA …

Treatise On Seismicity And Velocity Structure Of The Northern Mississippi Embayment, Akramalsadat Mostafanejad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Seismicity of the New Madrid seismic zone, velocity structure of the northern Mississippi Embayment and extent of lithospheric discontinuities have been investigated in this work. Spatial variations of seismic b-value in the NMSZ have been determined. A region of high b-value (b~1.8) in the northern segment of the Reelfoot fault has been found which reflects higher frequency in the occurrence rate of small earthquakes. This is attributed to fault creep in a medium with high silica content, high pore fluid pressure and extensive velocity heterogeneity. In another study, power spectral ratios of horizontal to vertical (H/V) and vertical to horizontal …

Cytosine-phosphate-guanine (CpG) sites in genes of the T cell pathways were compared to random samples of CpGs, contrasting non-pregnancy with first and second halves of gestation using mixed linear models.ResultsMore CpGs within the Th2 pathway (35%) changed significantly compared to randomly selected CpGs (24%) in …

Profiles Of Identity And Comorbid Obesity-Hypertension: Investigating The Relation Amongst Adult African Americans, Courtney Maclin Dec 2015

Profiles Of Identity And Comorbid Obesity-Hypertension: Investigating The Relation Amongst Adult African Americans, Courtney Maclin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

African Americans are at an increased risk of comorbid obesity-hypertension. This study examined the disparity through the lens of identity based-motivation theory. A latent profile analysis was conducted, to explicate the within group diversity of African American identity endorsement, distinguishing two classes based of racial group closeness; high closeness and moderate closeness. The findings suggest that identity, particularly moderate closeness, was significantly predictive of comorbid obesity-hypertension, both directly as well as indirectly through activity engagement. Socioeconomic status, however did not moderate the relation. We conclude that investigations of identity are particularly relevant to conceptualizing predictors of comorbid obesity-hypertension for African …

Pore-Pressure Diffusion Based On Analysis And Characterization Of Microseismicity In Central Arkansas, Paul Otieno Ogwari

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Part 1:Between August 2010 and June 2011, an intense sequence of induced earthquakes occurred along the Guy-Greenbrier fault in central Arkansas due to fluid injection at nearby waste disposal wells. A previous study by Horton (2010) limited to ~1,000 earthquakes having md > ~2.0 illuminated the ~13km fault. We present an updated catalogue of 17,395 earthquakes that appears complete between 0 <= ml <= 4.4 for the initial part of the sequence between August 2010 and October 20, 2010 located using an updated 1D velocity model for the region. The inclusion of the small magnitude events reveals that seismicity starts below the SRE injection well a month earlier than estimated using only md >2 events. During this period of time, the seismicity migrated from north to south enhancing the resolution of three joined sections that form the northern ~7.3km portion of the fault, which plunges southwards. The seismogenic zone covers the lower portion …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The process of software development consists of many activities, such as writing code, debugging, and navigating through code. Navigating through the code to understand or seek information for developing new code is a very time consuming and tedious task. Many tools are developed based on predictive models to help programmers in navigation. These models predict the fragments of code which might be of developer’s interest. There have been studies for comparing these models to determine their predictive accuracy. However, the models are often based on crude approximations of where a developer’s attention is. For example, prior work has both where …
