A high quality systematic review search has three core attributes; it is systematic, comprehensive, and transparent. The current over-emphasis on the primacy of systematic reviews over other forms of literature review in health research, however, runs the risk of encouraging publication of reviews whose searches do not meet these three criteria under the guise of being systematic reviews. Promoting Institutional Repositories Via Visualizations - A Changepoint Study, Zhehan Jiang, Sarah Fitzgerald

This paper examines whether implementing visualizations on an institutional repository webpage increases traffic on the site. Two methods for creating visualizations to attract faculty and student interest were employed. The first is a map displaying usage of institutional repository content from around the world. This map uses Tableau software to display Google Analytics data. The second method is a text mining tool allowing users to generate wordclouds from dissertation and thesis abstracts according to discipline and year of publication. The wordcloud uses R programming language, the Shiny software package, and a text mining package called tm. Change in the number …

Serving A Fragmented Field: Information Seeking In Higher Education, Sarah Fitzgerald

This study examines the information seeking habits and needs of scholars of higher education. Because higher education is a field which draws on many disciplinary traditions rather than a pure discipline in itself, the information needs of these scholars require diverse information seeking strategies. Phenomenological interviews with productive scholars of higher education were conducted and analyzed for this study. Ellis' (1989) common information seeking behaviors of social scientists are used as a framework to examine the behaviors of these applied social scientists in the modern information seeking environment.

Digital humanities work raises questions around digitization, search, and non-consumptive uses of texts, as well as distribution and access. But traditional humanities work is also confronting copyright questions, simply in terms of publishing, using, and accessing humanities research. This discussion, facilitated by Laura Quilter, UMass Copyright and Information Policy Librarian, will address the issues raised in copyright litigation, particularly the Authors Guild v. HathiTrust case and the "digital humanities" amicus brief, and consider the possible Open Access future presented by the Open Library of Humanities and other initiatives.
