Elucidating The Response Of Crop Plants Towards Individual, Combined And Sequentially Occurring Abiotic Stresses, Khalid Anwar, Rohit Joshi, Om Parkash Dhankher, Sneh L. Singla-Pareek, Ashwani Pareek Jan 2021

Elucidating The Response Of Crop Plants Towards Individual, Combined And Sequentially Occurring Abiotic Stresses, Khalid Anwar, Rohit Joshi, Om Parkash Dhankher, Sneh L. Singla-Pareek, Ashwani Pareek

Stockbridge Faculty Publication Series

In nature, plants are exposed to an ever-changing environment with increasing frequencies of multiple abiotic stresses. These abiotic stresses act either in combination or sequentially, thereby driving vegetation dynamics and limiting plant growth and productivity worldwide. Plants’ responses against these combined and sequential stresses clearly differ from that triggered by an individual stress. Until now, experimental studies were mainly focused on plant responses to individual stress, but have overlooked the complex stress response generated in plants against combined or sequential abiotic stresses, as well as their interaction with each other. However, recent studies have demonstrated that the combined and sequential …

Predicting Flood Insurance Claims With Hydrologic And Socioeconomic Demographics Via Machine Learning: Exploring The Roles Of Topography, Minority Populations, And Political Dissimilarity, James Knighton, Brian Buchanan, Christian Guzman, Rebecca Elliott, Eric White, Brian Rahm Jan 2020

Predicting Flood Insurance Claims With Hydrologic And Socioeconomic Demographics Via Machine Learning: Exploring The Roles Of Topography, Minority Populations, And Political Dissimilarity, James Knighton, Brian Buchanan, Christian Guzman, Rebecca Elliott, Eric White, Brian Rahm

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publication Series

Current research on flooding risk often focuses on understanding hazards, de-emphasizing the complex pathways of exposure and vulnerability. We investigated the use of both hydrologic and social demographic data for flood exposure mapping with Random Forest (RF) regression and classification algorithms trained to predict both parcel- and tract-level flood insurance claims within New York State, US. Topographic characteristics best described flood claim frequency, but RF prediction skill was improved at both spatial scales when socioeconomic data was incorporated. Substantial improvements occurred at the tract-level when the percentage of minority residents, housing stock value and age, and the political dissimilarity index …

Modeling Nature-Based Solutions For Climate Resilience, Mason Saleeba Jan 2019

Modeling Nature-Based Solutions For Climate Resilience, Mason Saleeba

Environmental & Water Resources Engineering Masters Projects

Riparian wetlands can serve as nature-based infrastructure that slow the rapid movement of water during high flow events. As the recurrence of high flow events increases due to global climate change, an improved understanding of the potential of wetland landscapes to provide flood mitigation is needed. This research addresses both the impacts of climate change and land cover on extreme flow events in the Otter Creek watershed in Vermont. The upstream portion of the basin is modeled with the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to investigate the impacts of climate change on extreme flow events. A Hydrologic Engineering Center's …

Restoring Floodplains In The Connecticut River Basin: A Flood Management Strategy, Abigail Ericson Jun 2017

Restoring Floodplains In The Connecticut River Basin: A Flood Management Strategy, Abigail Ericson

Environmental & Water Resources Engineering Masters Projects

This research investigates how changes to floodplains in the Connecticut River Basin impact flood events. Climate impacted flows and increased development within the floodplain could lead to worsening flood events and less habitat availability for threatened species. Potential future conditions are evaluated through a wide range of scenarios to assess the range of possible impacts using a HEC-RAS 2D model. Three different flood events, 1-yr, 10-yr, and 100-yr, are evaluated for each scenario. Five metrics, Discharge, Depth, Time of Arrival, Flooding Duration, and Number of Buildings Flooded, are tracked for each scenario. These metrics are compared to select the ideal …

The Sedimentological And Geomorphological Response Of A Glacially Conditioned Watershed To Event Induced Flooding: Insights From The Connecticut River And Hurricane Irene, Laura Kratz Jan 2013

The Sedimentological And Geomorphological Response Of A Glacially Conditioned Watershed To Event Induced Flooding: Insights From The Connecticut River And Hurricane Irene, Laura Kratz

Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014

Tropical Storm Irene’s most extreme rainfall resulted in record-breaking sediment loads from upland tributaries to the Connecticut River. However, was the event exceptional with respect to resultant deposition downstream? Off-river waterbodies to the Lower Connecticut River, such as cut-off meanders and blocked valley lakes, are a particularly important floodplain environment, which have been shown to serve as a focal point for the trapping of sediment and associated contaminants. This study evaluates the relative role of extreme events like Tropical Storm Irene in infilling these off-river environments. To meet this objective we compare the magnitude and composition of resultant sedimentation from …

Use Of Short-Term Floods As An Additional Management Strategy For Controlling Dodder (Cuscuta Gronovii Willd.) In Commercial Cranberry Production, James M. O'Connell Jan 2010

Use Of Short-Term Floods As An Additional Management Strategy For Controlling Dodder (Cuscuta Gronovii Willd.) In Commercial Cranberry Production, James M. O'Connell

Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014

Dodder (Cuscuta gronovii Willd.) is a weed of serious concern to cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon Ait.) growers. It develops vigorously and has a long-lived seed bank. Cranberries are a perennial crop and therefore strategies available to growers of annual crops are not practical. Herbicides, the primary management tool for dodder, although effective, have a narrow window of application and extended seedling emergence after applications can result in escapes. This project examined the effect of water temperature on dodder seed germination and the use of short-term floods (less than 72 hr) for dodder management.

Experiments investigated the effect of water temperature on …
