Diffuse Gamma-Ray Emission From Starburst Galaxies And M31, Jan J. Blom, Timothy A. D. Paglione, Alberto Carramiñana
Diffuse Gamma-Ray Emission From Starburst Galaxies And M31, Jan J. Blom, Timothy A. D. Paglione, Alberto Carramiñana
Astronomy Department Faculty Publication Series
We present a search for high energy gamma-ray emission from 9 nearby starburst galaxies and M31 with the EGRET instrument aboard CGRO. Though the diffuse gamma-ray emission from starburst galaxies was suspected to be detectable, we find no emission from NGC 253, M82 nor from the average of all 9 galaxies. The 2 sigma upper limit for the EGRET flux above 100 MeV for the averaged survey observations is 1.8 x 10-8 ph cm-2 s-1. From a model of the expected radio and gamma-ray emission, we find that the magnetic field in the nuclei of these galaxies is > 25 micro …
Effect Of The Magellanic Clouds On The Milky Way Disk And Vice Versa, Martin D. Weinberg
Effect Of The Magellanic Clouds On The Milky Way Disk And Vice Versa, Martin D. Weinberg
Astronomy Department Faculty Publication Series
The satellite-disk interaction provides limits on halo properties in two ways: (1) physical arguments motivate the excitation of observable Galactic disk structure in the presence of a massive halo, although precise limits on halo parameters are scenario-dependent; (2) conversely, the Milky Way as a whole has significant dynamical effect on LMC structure and this interaction also leads to halo limits. Together, these scenarios give strong corroboration of our current gravitational mass estimates and suggests a rapidly evolving LMC.

Quantum-Monte-Carlo Calculations For Bosons In A Two-Dimensional Harmonic Trap, Stefan Heinrichs, William J. Mullin
Quantum-Monte-Carlo Calculations For Bosons In A Two-Dimensional Harmonic Trap, Stefan Heinrichs, William J. Mullin
Physics Department Faculty Publication Series
Path-Integral-Monte-Carlo simulation has been used to calculate the properties of a two-dimensional (2D) interacting Bose system. The bosons interact with hard-core potentials and are confined to a harmonic trap. Results for the density profiles, the condensate fraction, and the superfluid density are presented. By comparing with the ideal gas we easily observe the effects of finite size and the depletion of the condensate because of interactions. The system is known to have no phase transition to a Bose-Einstein condensation in 2D, but the finite system shows that a significant fraction of the particles are in the lowest state at low …

Cosmic Advice For The Young Planner, John Mullin, Robert Mitchell
Cosmic Advice For The Young Planner, John Mullin, Robert Mitchell
Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Faculty Publication Series
Last fall, two of New England's oldest planners were sitting on the top of Mount Monadnock when they were approached by a group of graduate students. After a brief spell of friendly conversation, several students asked the wise ones for sage advice on the pitfalls of local planning. With a glint in their eyes and a sense of puckish humor they started to outline forty ways in which a newly minted planner could short circuit his/her career. And so, in what they hope will be taken with a great grain of salt, they listed the following.

Eastern Pioneer Valley Greenway/Greenspace Planning: The Applications Of Geographic Information Systems To The Regional Greenway/Greenspace Planning Process, Yongbin Sun
Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Masters Projects
The public agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGO) have made major stride in acquiring, planning and managing of valuable public lands in Eastern Pioneer Valley Region. The nine communities of the region have recognized that they need to coordinate and perhaps integrate their efforts to increase mutual benefits from such integration. Indeed, these towns are poised to create a unique greenway network which could maximize nature protection, outdoor recreation and historic preservation.
The purpose of the study is to integrate each town's effort to create the Eastern Pioneer Valley Region greenway/greenspace system or network that links the nine communities, protects the …

Bosnia: The Interface Of Hope And History And The Conundrum Of Post-War International Intervention, Jimmy Weir
Master's Capstone Projects
In 1997 I worked with the OSCE in Bosnia organizing the first post-war municipal elections. During this time I was confronted with the massive efforts of the international community in Bosnia, the limited development of the peace process two years after the war and the need for a clearer sense of history in order to understand the best direction for international community in their ongoing intervention in Bosnia. Coming so close on the heels of this genocidal war, an establish historical perspective on the war is still very much in the making. Using a spate of conversations I had with …
