Genealogy And Social History :: The Early Settlement Of Lebanon, Connecticutt, As A Case Study., Robert Charles Anderson
Genealogy And Social History :: The Early Settlement Of Lebanon, Connecticutt, As A Case Study., Robert Charles Anderson
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
More and more in recent years, social historians have begun to work in the same field as genealogists. More than ever before the social historians have utilized the local, public records which have long been mined by genealogists, and have also employed the family histories turned out over the last century by the genealogists. This paper contends that these two groups of researchers still have much to learn from one another. In particular, this paper sets forth a research strategy which uses the methodology of genealogy to study the question of migration. The town of Lebanon, Connecticut, is used as …

Interpersonal Transformations In Married And Cohabiting Couples., Victor Haifleigh Mark Borden
Interpersonal Transformations In Married And Cohabiting Couples., Victor Haifleigh Mark Borden
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
Members of married and cohabiting couples change through the course of their relationship. Many familiar activities take on new meanings when performed with an intimate partner, or when performed for the partner's benefit. As the relationship progresses, participants often find that their feelings about themselves and about many things around them have changed.
The Importance Of Analog Knowledge In Understanding The Mean., Pamela Thibodeau Hardiman
The Importance Of Analog Knowledge In Understanding The Mean., Pamela Thibodeau Hardiman
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
The mean is a commonly employed descriptor of a set of numbers, and forms the basis for several related statistics. Evidence indicates many undergraduates do not possess a relational understanding of the mean concept (Pollatsek, Lima, and Well, 1981). Pollatsek et.al.(1981) postulated three types of knowledge are involved in understanding the mean: functional, computational, and analog knowledge. Many of the college students they interviewed did not appear to posses adequate functional and computational knowledge, while none showed behaviors which might suggest they possessed analog knowledge.
Beliefs About The Sexual Victimization Of Children., Rebecca Alleen Shrum
Beliefs About The Sexual Victimization Of Children., Rebecca Alleen Shrum
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
During the last decade, public awareness of and concern about the sexual victimization of children has grown considerably. The number of reports to social service agencies has increased markedly, partly due to legislation in some states which mandates professionals to report suspected child abuse. Clinicians in mental health clinics are also reporting a substantial increase in the number of adult clients, who in the course of their therapies, report histories of childhood sexual victimization. Several books have been published within the past five years, predominantly about incest (e.g., Herman, 1981; Meiselman, 1978; Rush, 1980; Burgess, Groth, Holmstrom, and Sgroi, 1978). …
Inferences Used In Comprehension And Recall At Ages 4 And 7., James G. Thompson
Inferences Used In Comprehension And Recall At Ages 4 And 7., James G. Thompson
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
Children at ages 4 and 7 were presented three stories, one in each of three causality versions, in order to determine whether inference ability and recall are influenced by the strength of the causal chain in the story. For each story, children were asked two inference questions about logical causality, two questions constrained by story information, and two unconstrained inference questions. Three question-timing conditions were used to address issues concerning when inferences are drawn in story comprehension and how they are influenced by the total amount of information provided. Questions were asked either on-line, or at the end of the …
A Role For Serotonin In The Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Response To Insulin Stress., Rachel Yehuda
A Role For Serotonin In The Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Response To Insulin Stress., Rachel Yehuda
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
Controversy exists concerning the possible involvement of serotonin in the pituitary-adrenocortical response to stress. In the present research, a variety of physiological and pharmacological manipulations were used in male rats to study the role of this neurotransmitter in the adrenocortical response to insulin- induced hypoglycemia. First, the effect of insulin stress on hypothalamic 5-HT metabolism was examined, and an increased turnover was found as determined by an enhanced accumulation of 5-HT following monoamine oxidase inhibition. The corticos terone response to insulin was potentiated by prior administration of L-tryptophan, and blocked by pretreatment with valine, an amino acid that competes with …
Discriminant Measures For Desperate Love., Michael B. Sperling
Discriminant Measures For Desperate Love., Michael B. Sperling
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
Viewing desperate love as marked by insecurity, urgency, a great need for reciprocation, idealization and affective extremes, this study was designed to investigate the assumption that desperate love constitutes a manifestation of predispositional characteristics. The primary hypothesis is that people can be differentiated as tending or not tending toward the experiences of desperate love based upon significantly different patterns of response when describing characteristic qualities of the self and important others. A secondary hypothesis is that this differentiation is also reflected in a more romantic attitude toward love along the romantic-companionate continuum among those who tend toward desperate love.
The Effects Of Environment On The Self Perception Of The Mentally Retarded Adult., Linda D. Scott
The Effects Of Environment On The Self Perception Of The Mentally Retarded Adult., Linda D. Scott
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
The deinstitutionalization movement has made a significant impact on the lives of mentally retarded people. Deinstitutionalization provides the necessary environmental changes for mentally retarded people who have been forced to spend their prior years in institutions These environmental changes are widely regarded as having beneficial effects. However, little research has been done to assess whether the "community residence" is actually an environment of growth or even the environment of choice for the mentally retarded person. The purpose of this study was to explore the self-images of mentally retarded persons living in institutional and non institutional environments and attitudes toward retardation …
Defensiveness As A Moderator Variable For Self Esteem., Laurie Ann Teraspulsky
Defensiveness As A Moderator Variable For Self Esteem., Laurie Ann Teraspulsky
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
The need to take into account the moderating effects of defen- ' siveness in understanding how scores on self report assessments of personality are arrived at is suggested on theoretical and empirical grounds alike. To the extent that people have strong images of who they would like to be (e.g., Horney, 1950; Rogers, 1951) and a basic need for self esteem (Epstein, 1976; Rosenberg, 1979; Snyder, Stephan, and Rosenfield, 197S; Rogers, 1951) it is likely that at least their conscious appraisal of self is subject to distortions of a self-enhancing nature.
Healthy Children's Response To Chronic Illness In Siblings., Lee Ann Simons
Healthy Children's Response To Chronic Illness In Siblings., Lee Ann Simons
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
This nation's number one health problem for both children and adults is chronic illness (Travis, 1976). This is especially tragic in the case of children, seven to ten percent of whom are afflicted with one or more serious chronic illnesses of physical origins (Mattson, 1972; Travis, 1976). This figure represents an increase in recent years, in part because medical advances have changed many once fatal childhood illnesses to more longterm, chronic conditions. Moreover, due to improved methods of early diagnosis and treatment, more families are now living with chronically ill children, and for longer periods of time. Long term illness …
Rheological And Other Properties Of Some Novel Thermotropic Liquid Crystalline Polyesters., Debra Ann Simoff
Rheological And Other Properties Of Some Novel Thermotropic Liquid Crystalline Polyesters., Debra Ann Simoff
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
A "liquid crystal" is a substance whose properties are intermediate between those of a crystalline solid and an isotropic liquid. The molecules within a liquid crystal are partially ordered, but they are able to translate easily in at least one direction.
An Attributional Analysis Of The Effect Of Deceptive Nonverbal Behaviors On Simulated Jurors' Decisions., Richard Buckey Chesley
An Attributional Analysis Of The Effect Of Deceptive Nonverbal Behaviors On Simulated Jurors' Decisions., Richard Buckey Chesley
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
Interpersonal communication is both verbal and nonverbal. These two channels function most often in a supplementary fashion to each other (Ekman & Friesen, 1969). For example, the message that emanates from a person's facial expression is typically consistent with that person's verbal message. However, these communication modes can sometimes be quite contradictory in the information they impart. In the present study, people's judgements when confronted with incongruent interchannel information were investigated. The focus was on observers' decisions regarding the believability of another's verbal message when delivered in conjunction with nonverbal behaviors characteristic of deception.
A Study Of Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) As An Electron Beam Resist., Vicki C. Crosby
A Study Of Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) As An Electron Beam Resist., Vicki C. Crosby
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
Some polymers exhibit property changes when exposed to ionizing radiation. When these changes are great enough that irradiated areas may be distinguished from unirradiated areas, the polymer may be suitable for use as a resist in the fabrication of semi -conducting devices. The exact nature of the lithographic resist will be explained more thoroughly later; however it is an essential step in the building of integrated circuitry.
