The Transcriptional Repressor Protein Growth Factor Independence-1b In T Lymphopoiesis., Loretta L. Doan May 2004

The Transcriptional Repressor Protein Growth Factor Independence-1b In T Lymphopoiesis., Loretta L. Doan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

T lymphopoiesis has been an intense focus of immunological research since the discovery of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) and T cell mediated transplant rejection. Additionally, researchers have long appreciated the role of T cells, and their development, in autoimmune disorders. Interest in this field has increased upon the realization that many leukemic oncoproteins are the very factors that control normal T cell development. Thus, the transcriptional networks that drive the function and development of T lymphocytes are closely linked with disease states.Growth Factor Independence 1 (GFI1) and GFI1B are two very similar transcriptional repressor oncoproteins that are encoded by …

Cephalogram Pseudo-Color And Emboss Enhancements : Anatomical Landmark Clarity In Photostimuable Phosphor Cephalometrics., Ryan B. Wiesemann 1977- May 2004

Cephalogram Pseudo-Color And Emboss Enhancements : Anatomical Landmark Clarity In Photostimuable Phosphor Cephalometrics., Ryan B. Wiesemann 1977-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Purpose: To evaluate baseline and 3 different image enhancements for the detection of landmarks and overall perceived quality in photostimuable phosphor cephalograms. Methods: DenOptix images of 48 patients (plus 12 repeats) were presented randomly to 10 observers who rated 11 anatomic landmarks and overall appearance (1 = poor; 2 = satisfactory; 3 = excellent). Equal numbers of 16-bit images with single peak (SP) 16-bit double peak (DP) histograms and 8-bit images were included. Enhancements used were: (1)emboss; (2)pseudocolor; and (3)emboss-pseudocolor. The Friedman Test with Wilcoxon post hoc analysis was applied. Results and conclusion: The results support the use of emboss …

Factors Influencing The Willingness To Mentor Female Campus Recreation Professionals., Glenna G. Bower May 2004

Factors Influencing The Willingness To Mentor Female Campus Recreation Professionals., Glenna G. Bower

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to discover factors which influence a mentor's decision to engage in a mentoring relationship within campus recreation administration. The present study investigated four areas of inquiry within campus recreation: (a)what are the individual reasons for mentoring women? (b)what organizational factors inhibit or facilitate mentoring women? ©what protégé characteristics attracted mentors? And (d)what outcomes are associated with mentoring women? A qualitative research design from a phenomenological genre was chosen to examine the mentoring relationship from the perspective of the mentor. A group of campus recreation professionals from the Midwest were contacted for the study (N …

The Current Crisis In Orthodontic Education : The Residents' Perspective., Matthew Kawabori Bruner May 2004

The Current Crisis In Orthodontic Education : The Residents' Perspective., Matthew Kawabori Bruner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to identify orthodontic residents' demographic trends, goals for the future, and perspectives on training. A 26-item survey, conducted at the Graduate Orthodontic Residency Program, in August 2003, was distributed to residents representing 51 of the 58 orthodontic programs in the U.S. Questionnaires were sent to 5 programs not attending GORP. Of the 380 questionnaires distributed at the meeting, 295 were returned, while 35 of 50 mailed questionnaires were returned. Total response rate was 77%. Clinical education was the most important factor when choosing a residency. Residents' future plans were to publish their research, earn …

The Role Of The Toll-Like Receptor Pathway In Susceptibility To Inflammatory Bowel Disease., Nigel Crawford 1974- May 2004

The Role Of The Toll-Like Receptor Pathway In Susceptibility To Inflammatory Bowel Disease., Nigel Crawford 1974-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic autoimmune disorder that is subdivided into Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC), and indeterminate colitis (IC). Epidemiological studies have proven that genetic variation increases susceptibility to IBD, with multiple abnormal genes combined with environmental factors being responsible for disease development. Characterization of these susceptibility genes remains of critical importance to improving understanding of IBD pathogenesis. The overall aim of this study is to discover new IBD susceptibility genes. The initial approach was to study a number of previously described IBD susceptibility loci through characterization of peak LOD score short tandem repeat markers using …
