Challenging Conventional Wisdom : Section 8 Housing And The Real Impact On Neighborhood Values In Louisville, Kentucky., Paul Francis Dries Dec 2016

Challenging Conventional Wisdom : Section 8 Housing And The Real Impact On Neighborhood Values In Louisville, Kentucky., Paul Francis Dries

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Section 8 Housing was designed to de-concentrate poverty and spread affordable housing across communities. There are many studies that have evaluated the successes associated with the policy of dispersing the urban poor to the surrounding suburban areas in various cities. The positive impacts of dispersing the urban poor, in terms of education, self-esteem, and jobs, is well documented. There are fewer studies related to the potential externalities associated with these programs. This study uses advanced multiple regression techniques to study 170 Louisville neighborhoods to look at whether large concentrations of Section 8 housing have a negative impact on neighborhood housing …

"A Part Of, Rather Than Apart From" : Louisville's Black Arts Scene In The Mid-Twentieth Century., Wesley Sawyer Cunningham Aug 2016

"A Part Of, Rather Than Apart From" : Louisville's Black Arts Scene In The Mid-Twentieth Century., Wesley Sawyer Cunningham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the role that three predominantly black art organizations – Gallery Enterprises, the Louisville Arts Workshop, and the West Side Players – played in Louisville, Kentucky’s black community during the mid-twentieth century. Working from the integrated and cooperative nature of the long Black Freedom Struggle in Louisville, Kentucky, local black artists formed integrated organizations around the arts and promoted black identity, inclusivity and creativity through community-building and consciousness-raising. Furthermore, by defining the varying uses of the term “political” in reference to black art, this work shows that the politicization of artwork can best be understood using a spectrum …

The Colored Librarian : Thomas F. Blue And The Louisville Free Public Library's Colored Department, 1905-1935., Jacob Carlton Burress May 2016

The Colored Librarian : Thomas F. Blue And The Louisville Free Public Library's Colored Department, 1905-1935., Jacob Carlton Burress

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the role of Reverend Thomas F. Blue and the Colored Department at the Louisville Free Public Library played in generating social uplift for African Americans in Louisville, Kentucky in the first third of the twentieth century. Working from the philosophical framework of intellectuals Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois, Blue created the first free Colored Library Department in the nation and used that department as a nexus in Louisville’s African American community. The Introduction outlines the central argument of the paper and sets up the intellectual debates between Washington and Du Bois. The second section dives …

Development And Applications Of Novel Hf-Based Fluorination Reagents : Dmpu-Hf., Otome Elisha Okoromoba May 2016

Development And Applications Of Novel Hf-Based Fluorination Reagents : Dmpu-Hf., Otome Elisha Okoromoba

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The utility of fluorine in medicinal and manufacturing chemistry is undisputed. Despite its usefulness, the incorporation of fluorine in organic molecules is not without challenges. Regardless of their electrophilic or nucleophilic nature, most, if not all, fluorinating reagents derive from HF. Nucleophilic reagents are less expensive compared with their counterparts, and many are not commercially available. The Hammond laboratory is interested in developing and applying HF-based fluorination reagents that are cost effective and capable of enhancing both classical and metal based transformations. The following chapters describe some of the applications of our HF-based reagent. Chapter 2 discusses the preparation and …

Integrated Analysis Of Mirna/Mrna Expression And Gene Methylation Using Sparse Canonical Correlation Analysis., Dake Yang May 2016

Integrated Analysis Of Mirna/Mrna Expression And Gene Methylation Using Sparse Canonical Correlation Analysis., Dake Yang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a large number of small endogenous non-coding RNA molecules (18-25 nucleotides in length) which regulate expression of genes post-transcriptionally. While a variety of algorithms exist for determining the targets of miRNAs, they are generally based on sequence information and frequently produce lists consisting of thousands of genes. Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) is a multivariate statistical method that can be used to find linear relationships between two data sets, and here we apply CCA to find the linear combination of differentially expressed miRNAs and their corresponding target genes having maximal negative correlation. Due to the high dimensionality, sparse …
