Aim: Investigate provider patterns of risk behavior screening at an adolescent health clinic and describe findings from a study that investigated patterns of risk behavior screening in an adolescent health clinic.

Background: Adolescents who engage in risky behaviors are vulnerable to problems with current and future mental health issues such as depression, substance use, or other psychiatric disorders. Identifying the risky behaviors in adolescents that are associated with the potential presence of depressive symptoms can be helpful to the provider when deciding to refer an adolescent for further mental health assessment. Objective: The purpose of this study is to assess how providers are managing adolescent patients with migraines in Kentucky.

Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study via a 28-item survey instrument, which is distributed electronically via member listserve to members of the Kentucky Coalition of Nurse Practitioners and Nurse Midwives (KCNPNM).

Results: Of the 35 survey respondents, there were 29 respondents who met criteria for participation in the survey. Respondents reported the most common presenting symptom for adolescent migraine was headache. Over half of the respondents (58.6%) initiated treatment with over-the-counter medications, with ibuprofen (65.5%) being the most commonly used. 62.1% of …

It is widely recognized that African American youth are disproportionately represented in the juvenile justice system in comparison to other ethnic/racial groups, and this has generated a large body of research into the etiology and prevention of crime in this population. Although there has been considerable research attention to identifying and reducing the disproportionate contact among African American youth within the juvenile justice system, it is still unclear what factors contribute to their involvement in the criminal justice system. Adolescence is a time associated with increased risk taking and peer relations. Research has shown that adolescents are more vulnerable to peer pressure compared to adults, leading to exacerbated risk taking. Preclinical research suggests that these findings may also be applicable to adolescent rodents, which find social interaction rewarding and are prone to risky behavior. There is, however, little research on the effect of social interaction on rodent models of risky decision-making.
