SEXUAL ORIENTATION AND THE LAW: A RESEARCH BIBLIOGRAPHY is a project of the Standing Committee on Lesbian and Gay Issues of the American Association of Law Libraries. This almost-500 page volume includes several features that the Standing Committee hopes will be useful to librarians and their patrons. These include: a description of the bibliography project from its origins in 1987; an introduction by Brad Sears, Executive Director of the Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation Law and Public Policy that places this literature into intellectual, historical and legal perspective; a reprint of the original 1994 bibligraphy as it appeared in Law …

Road diets are frequently suggested solutions to problems of left-turn related crashes. This feature analyzes the impact of the conversion of 15 sites using a Full Bayes Approach as well as a classical before-and-after study (with yoked comparison sites). The study found a reduction in the crash rate, crash density, injury crashes, the involvement rate for drivers older than 65 and left-turn related crashes.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. In 2000, an estimated 10.5 million people had COPD, of which more than 7.2 million were from the under-age 65 employed population. The prevalence of COPD in the workforce population was substantial with 46.5% of current employment among adults having the disease. However, the cost burden in the employed population is unknown. We examined COPD prevalence and costs in a large employment-based population. Using claims data from 1999 to 2003, we estimated the cost associated with COPD-related hospitalizations, emergency department visits, outpatient services, …
The Possibility Of Technical Definition In Later Wittgenstein, James M. Donovan
The Possibility Of Technical Definition In Later Wittgenstein, James M. Donovan
James M. Donovan
Wittgenstein’s philosophy remains influential. If its tenets impose constraints on either the possibility of scientific definition at all, or upon the kinds that will be valid, then those limits should be recognized and to the extent possible, observed. Locating the locus of meaning in ordinary use does appear to preclude certain types of definitional strategies. Stipulative definitions of terms that have ordinary currency but which are idiosyncratic and not grounded in that common usage would appear to be most troublesome. It is not that one could not attempt such definitions (quite the contrary, they are offered at every turn), but …

COPD is a major cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide with an estimated 2.75 million deaths in 2000 (fourth leading cause of death). In addition to the considerable morbidity and mortality associated with COPD, this disease incurs significant healthcare and societal costs. Current COPD guidelines acknowledge that the following can improve COPD mortality: smoking cessation; long-term oxygen therapy; and lung volume reduction surgery in small subsets of COPD patients. To date, no randomized controlled trials have demonstrated an effect of pharmacological treatment on mortality, although several observational studies suggest that both long-acting bronchodilators and inhaled corticosteroids may provide a survival …

Introduction
Several studies have shown a correlation between body mass index (BMI) and both the development of critical illness and adverse outcomes in critically ill patients. The goal of our study was to examine this relationship prospectively with particular attention to the influence of concomitant diabetes mellitus (DM).
Methods
We analyzed data from 15,408 participants in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study for this analysis. BMI and the presence of DM were defined at baseline. We defined 'acute organ failure' as those subjects who met a standard definition with diagnostic codes abstracted from hospitalization records. Outcomes assessed included the …

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to discover the characteristics and quality of interlibrary loan (ILL) titles, and determine whether purchasing ILL titles is a useful collection development method.
Design/methodology/approach - The study analyzed document containing 18,322 monographic education and psychology monographs borrowed by Southern Illinois University Carbondale patrons through I-Share, Illinois' statewide catalog, during the 2004 calendar year. Education and psychology books account for 574 of the 18,322 titles. The study located 132 reviews for 92 of the titles by searching PsycINFO and Education Abstracts. It recorded reviewer recommendation, publication date, publisher, source of review, and list …

Behavioural Effects Of Nicotine Exposure From Secondhand Smoke Among Bar And Restaurant Workers, Chizimuzo T.C. Okoli, Ellen J. Hahn, Mary Kay Rayens
Chizimuzo T.C. Okoli
Introduction
• Besides the adverse physical health effects of secondhand tobacco smoke (SHS) exposure, not much is known about its behavioural outcomes.
• SHS exposure is a source of involuntary nicotine exposure with potential behavioural consequences in smokers and nonsmokers alike.
• Hospitality workers are a population at high risk for health problems related to occupational SHS exposure.
• This study explores self-reported behavioural symptoms commonly associated with nicotine withdrawal among smoking and nonsmoking bar and restaurant workers exposed to SHS.
Methods • This is a cross-sectional analysis of existing data obtained from a larger study examining the effect of …

Urban and suburban roadways serve two distinct and sometimes conflicting purposes: providing mobility and allowing access to land and land developments. High-level urban roadways (e.g. arterials) should primarily serve mobility needs of travellers and goods. Low level, local roadways should primarily allow for land development access. Arterials that allow too much direct land access fail to function properly in terms of both traffic operations and safety. Such roadways are in need of access management. The operational and safety benefits of access management are impressive; access management has been shown to reduce crash rates on urban and suburban arterials by up …

A pilot study was developed to determine use of the University of Texas at Austin General Libraries’ research collections in the fields of civil engineering and educational psychology and to investigate the research behavior of graduate students. First, the authors sampled bibliographic citations from dissertations completed during the years 1997 and 2002 in the above-named fields. Then, a survey was sent to the dissertation writers to gain insight into use and opinions of library services for their graduate research. Analysis of information provided by both collection- and user-centered data-gathering techniques serves to underscore the value of the merged evaluation methods.

BACKGROUND AND AIM:
Sarcoidosis is a multi-system granulomatous disease of unknown etiology with significant racial and gender differences in disease severity, incidence, and prevalence. Primarily treated in outpatients, limited information is available on hospital outcomes in patients with sarcoidosis. The National Hospital Discharge Survey (NHDS) was analyzed over a 22-year period to determine trends in hospitalization and the impact of concurrent comorbidities.
METHODS:
Secondary analysis was done of the NHDS, a national survey of inpatient medical care for short stays in nonfederal facilities.
RESULTS:
There were a total of 750 million hospitalizations over this 22-year period, with 593,455 (0.08%) hospitalizations …

SoftwareInterProScan is an essential step in the Epichloëfestucae genome project’s pipeline. Complete determination of the genome sequence for Epichloëfestucae, requires substantial programmatic and computing efforts. Due to the running time requirements the computational volume of some of its subtasks exceed the power of a traditional single processor computation and high performance approaches, such as grid computing, are needed.
