The purpose of this paper is to put forth a model to support the psychological safety of undergraduate students as they engage in a form of experiential learning called self-experiences. Self-experiences pair active engagement in learning episodes with learner self-inquiry. The need to safeguard curricular self-experiences is grounded in the American Music Therapy Association’s Professional Competencies and Code of Ethics and the Certification Board for Music Therapists’ Board Certification Domains. We first explicate several types and benefits of self-experiences and identify potential risks and contraindications that may compromise learners’ psychological safety and even cause harm. Next, we describe …

When Working Out Makes You Sick To Your Stomach: What To Know About Exercise-Induced Nausea, Anne R. Crecelius
Health and Sport Science Faculty Publications
You’re doing it! You’re working out, reaping all those benefits of exercise that have been drilled into your head.
So you’re pedaling your heart out or running like you’re escaping a zombie horde. You’re feeling accomplished, on cloud nine, until … your stomach starts to churn. You may even feel dizzy. Your feelings of accomplishment have turned to agony as you deal with a bout of nausea.
Exercise-induced nausea is quite common, as are exercise-induced gastrointestinal (GI) problems in general, affecting perhaps up to 90% of endurance athletes.
So why does this happen and, more important, how can you prevent …

As the field of higher education began furloughs and layoffs to alleviate COVID-19 budget concerns, cultural heritage workers were directed to clearly demonstrate how their work contributes to institutions’ educational missions. Although physical library and archival collections were deemed inaccessible and less critical during the pandemic than ebooks, electronic journals, and digitized special collections, the two special collections projects considered in this case study demonstrate the value of continuing collections management work remotely and the relevance of student employees and other contingent workers in libraries and archives. The projects—one an inventory and bibliography of books acquired from a defunct religious …

Sustainable Energy System: Case Study Of Solar Water Pumps, Vibhu Sharma
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Graduate Student Publications
In rural areas of countries, agricultural lands require reliable and cost-effective water supply systems. This study evaluates the viability of replacing diesel pumps with solar-powered water pumps (PVPs) in rural Ohio, focusing on borehole depths <100m. The analysis shows that PVPs are a cost-effective alternative to diesel pumps, with a discounted payback period of 7 years for 3 HP solar water pumps. Using life cycle costing and financial modeling in Microsoft Excel, the costs and benefits of PVPs and diesel pumps are compared, demonstrating the economic and environmental benefits of solar water pumping systems.

Industry 4.0 In The Retail Sector: Sustainability Of Food Retail With A Focus On Food Insecurity In Dayton, Oh, Katrina Alexis Coleman
Honors Theses
In recent years, large scale agricultural and food processing industries have experienced a great worldwide digital transformation. The advent of Industry 4.0, which has become popular in Europe, has helped many industries optimize their operations. Relatively new is the idea that food processing industries and other stakeholders in the food distribution supply chain cannot only optimize their processes but also, track and provide timely customer service. This has technical and managerial challenges that might limit the potential benefits of industry 4.0 in the efficient distribution of fresh food produce. For example, food retailers have to meet the increasing customer desire …
Effect Of Airfoil-Preserved Undulations On Wing Performance And Wingtip Vortex, Faith A. Loughnane
Effect Of Airfoil-Preserved Undulations On Wing Performance And Wingtip Vortex, Faith A. Loughnane
Honors Theses
The effect of undulation placement (leading edge, trailing edge, leading and trailing edge) on the wing performance and the wingtip vortex was investigated. Experiments were performed at the University of Dayton Low Speed Wind Tunnel (UD-LSWT) on undulated wings where the NACA 0012 airfoil cross-section is preserved along the wingspan. Sensitivity studies were done on the undulation wavelength along the span (λ/c 0.31, 0.21 and 0.15) and undulation placement (leading edge, trailing edge, and both leading and trailing edge). The leading edge undulations delayed stall until higher angles of attack, however, the maximum aerodynamic efficiency was reduced. The trailing edge …
Multi-Modal Data Analysis And Fusion For Classification In 2d/3d Sensing, Jonathan P. Schierl
Multi-Modal Data Analysis And Fusion For Classification In 2d/3d Sensing, Jonathan P. Schierl
Honors Theses
This research would develop a method of more accurately detecting objects using machine learning. There is plenty of current research and algorithms to tackle this problem. Our approach would use a dataset gathered with 2-Dimensional Infrared Imagery as well as 3-Dimensional LiDAR Data. We would develop a deep learning network with the ability to “learn” using both of these datasets. This proposed fusion network will perform better than either of the individual networks.
The Tolerance Of Shewanella Woodyi For Electric Potentials And Heavy Metals As Biofilms, Christopher Thomas Mortensen
The Tolerance Of Shewanella Woodyi For Electric Potentials And Heavy Metals As Biofilms, Christopher Thomas Mortensen
Honors Theses
Shewanella woodyi is a bioluminescent marine organism that is known to be metal tolerant and modulate the intensity of its luminescence with electrochemical potential. The viability of S. woodyi as a bioreporter for the toxic heavy metal zinc, copper, and silver was analyzed. Biofilms of S. woodyi was grown on marine broth agar plates and then exposed to various concentrations of each metal ion to evaluate biofilm response to the metal ions that were generated from an operating short circuited electrode containing either Zn, Cu, or Ag metal. The ability of the bacteria to tolerate the heavy metals and continue …
Mortgage Discrimination And District Manipulation: Deterrents To Minority Mobility, Megan M. Rice
Mortgage Discrimination And District Manipulation: Deterrents To Minority Mobility, Megan M. Rice
Honors Theses
This paper explores the relationship between gerrymandering and home loan discrimination. Gerrymandering, the process of manipulating district plans for political gain, and discrimination in mortgage lending are both illegal; and yet, they still occur in today’s society. By using individual loan application data from the HMDA’s website, a series of regressions will be run using applicant characteristics to measure loan discrimination at the state level. Once a state level model has been constructed, a measure of gerrymandering called the Efficiency Gap will be added into the regression in order to explore the relationship between home loan discrimination and gerrymandering. Regression …

Designing And Implementing A Peer-To-Peer Led Behavioral And Energy Reduction Program For Low-Income Neighborhoods, Jenn Hoody
Honors Theses
Reduction in energy consumption from fossil fuels is a necessary step toward combating climate change as more and more studies are revealing the catastrophic outcomes if the current trends do not change. Residential programs generally managed by energy utilities promoting energy cost savings and reduced consumption are being enacted to decrease the greenhouse emissions. However, thus far, little to no measures have been taken to extend the reach of such programs to low-income communities. Reducing household energy consumption would be particularly beneficial for these communities as it would lower utility bills for low-income households who spend a substantially greater portion …

What was life like in the neighborhoods surrounding the University of Dayton campus before students began living in the houses? This question is what we wanted students to imagine and answer when we created an AVIATE opportunity this semester. Beginning with houses at Wyoming and Brown streets and working south, students are researching house addresses from 1920, looking up the residents, and then pinning that information to a Google MyMap.
