Christmas Season Looks Promising For Miami Valley Retailers, University Of Dayton

College Students Give Grisham, Dr. Seuss Raves, University Of Dayton
News Releases
Best-selling author John Grisham is hot among the college crowd, but rhyme-meister Dr. Seuss is close behind in popularity, according to students at the University of Dayton. In an unscientific poll, University of Dayton English professors asked students to name 10 books they've read and would recommend as Christmas gifts for their peers. Of the 144 students who responded, 17 percent suggested The Firm by John Grisham. Grisham also garnered second place, with 12 percent selecting The Client. Green Eggs & Ham, by Dr. Seuss, tied with three adult novels, including Grisham's Pelican Brief, for seventh place, and the good …

Majority Of Shoppers Take Their Business Out Of Town, University Of Dayton Study Shows, University Of Dayton
News Releases
The majority of shoppers from smaller communities prefer either to travel out of town or stay at home to shop rather than frequent local stores, according to a published study by two marketing professors at the University of Dayton. UD's Vicki Blakney and William Sekely found that about 65 percent of these shoppers visit other towns to do their shopping or use mail-order and other in-home options such as shopping networks and on-line services. Local retailers can improve their chances of enticing customers by advertising and making the shopping experience more fun, the researchers said.

For Pagans, Red And Green Symbolized Life: For Retailers, They've Come To Mean Profits, University Of Dayton
News Releases
Red and green, recognized by Americans as the indisputable colors of Christmas, actually have their origins in northern European pagan customs, according to two historians at the University of Dayton. Use of the two colors is based on very old associations and also some fairly new ones, they said. To the pagans in northern Europe, plants that had the ability to remain green throughout winter acquired a mystical significance, said Una Cadegan, an assistant professor of history at UD. Evergreens, holly and mistletoe also bore fruit the color of blood, another hue associated with life. Christianity co-opted those symbols and …

Art Projects Get Children In The Holiday Spirit And Create A Sense Of Tradition, University Of Dayton
News Releases
As cold weather settles in, families spend more time indoors. The children could watch cartoons on TV — or they could do some holiday art activities that will get them in the holiday spirit, says Mary Zahner, an associate professor of visual arts at the University of Dayton. "When you have a holiday, children begin to understand it's a moment," Zahner says. "This moment is an opportune time for children to learn about holiday traditions." This press release provides a few inexpensive art projects Zahner suggests that she says entertain kids and instill a sense of family tradition.

Shoppers In Miami Valley Region Should See Prices Drop As Season Progresses, University Of Dayton
News Releases
Merchandise shoppers in the Miami Valley region should reap the benefits of price wars between now and Christmas, says Irene Dickey, a retail marketing specialist at the University of Dayton. Nationally, the retail scene is fairly stable, she says, but locally intense competition coupled with an overstocked inventory — especially cold-weather goods — will force retailers to lower prices. "Up until Thanksgiving, it was business as usual," Dickey says. "Now we're getting into warfare. There will be deeper price cuts in the next four weeks. … It's great for consumers."

Optical-Fiber Preamplifiers For Ladar Detection And Associated Measurements For Improving The Signal-To-Noise Ratio, Michael S. Salisbury, Paul F. Mcmanamon, Bradley D. Duncan
Electro-Optics and Photonics Faculty Publications
In an effort to increase achievable postdetection signal-tonoise ratios (SNRs) of continuous-wave, 1-gm all-solid-state ladar systems, a prototype rare-earth-doped optical-fiber amplifier has been included in the optical return signal path of both a heterodyne and a directdetection ladar system. We provide numerical predictions for SNR increases according to our previously developed theory. We also detail our experimental efforts and provide the results of SNR measurements for four distinct cases: direct ladar detection with and without a fiber amplifier, and heterodyne ladar detection with and without a fiber amplifier. Experimentally measured increases in SNRs for ladar systems incorporating an optical-fiber amplifier …
