Ecological Responses Of Lake Eola To Urban Runoff, Harvey H. Harper Iii Oct 1979

Ecological Responses Of Lake Eola To Urban Runoff, Harvey H. Harper Iii

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Lake Eola is a land-locked lake located in downtown Orlando, Florida. Its surface area is approximately 27.0 acres (11.0 Ha) and water depth is 2 to 3 feet (0.6 to 0.9 meters) near the shore and 22 feet (6.7 meters) toward the center. Periodical water samples were collected from the lake and storm drains for various stormwater events and physiochemical parameters were analyzed to calculated loading rates from nutrients and heavy metals released to Lake Eola. Algal bioassay studies were performed to investigate stormwater impacts on productivity. Periodical water samples were collected from the lake mixed and filtered for limiting …

Reliability Analysis Of Emergency Telephone System Models, Thomas J. Hobbs Oct 1979

Reliability Analysis Of Emergency Telephone System Models, Thomas J. Hobbs

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Several alternate systems for use in implementing the 911 emergency system in Orange County, Florida were investigated. The proposed systems were compared with the already existing systems on the basis of reliability, response time, and cost. System reliability was the prime consideration of the study. Flow charts of each system were formulated in order to determine the functions required of equipment and humans. The reliability was then determined by examining the difficulty of the tasks that each was required to perform. Reliability models of the present and proposed systems were constructed. By examining these models and comparing the reliabilities, response …

Small Mammal Population Dynamics And Community Structure In Three East Central Florida Communities, Mary Helen Keim Oct 1979

Small Mammal Population Dynamics And Community Structure In Three East Central Florida Communities, Mary Helen Keim

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Small mammal population dynamics and community structure were studied in three East Central Florida communities. The communities were compared as distinct stages of a sand pine scrub sere. The small mammals live-trapped with greatest frequency in this 3852 trap-night study were all cricetine rodents, Peromyscus polionotus niveiventris (beach mouse), Sigmodon hispidus littoralis (cotton rat), and Peromyscus gossypinus palmarius (cotton mouse). Population numbers, survival, body weights, hind foot lengths, age structure, sex ratios, reproductive cycles, and movements were discussed for each of three species mentioned. These data will serve as a baseline information for ecological monitoring studies associated with NASA Space …

The Effect Of Ozone On Trihalomethane Precursors In Raw And Magnesium Treated Lake Washington Water, James Kent Kimes Oct 1979

The Effect Of Ozone On Trihalomethane Precursors In Raw And Magnesium Treated Lake Washington Water, James Kent Kimes

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A bench scale laboratory ozonator was constructed and determined to produce 27 mg O3/hr. A contacting system and experimental procedure was developed to approximate a mass balance of 0, 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 ppm were applied to raw and magnesium treated water from Lake Washington which is the potable water source for Melbourne, Florida. The effect of ozone on trihalomethane precursors was studied by comparing THM formation at 1, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours following chlorination. The concentrations of each specie, chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochlormethane and bromoform are reported. The highest 96 hour TTHM concentrations reported were 2773 …

The Reproductive Biology Of The Diamondback Terrapin, Malaclemys Terrapin Tequesta, Richard A. Seigel Jul 1979

The Reproductive Biology Of The Diamondback Terrapin, Malaclemys Terrapin Tequesta, Richard A. Seigel

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The reproductive biology of the Florida east coast terrapin, Malalemys terrapin tequesta was studied during 1977-1978 at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Brevard County, Florida. Mating occurred in small canals and ditches during late march and April. Terrapins exhibited a poorly developed courtship behavior system: this was attributed to the relative isolation of the species due to its brackish water habitat. Nesting occurred on dike roads, rather than on sand dunes as reported for other races of Malaclemys. Air temperature was the most important factor controlling nesting activity. One to three clutches were laid each year. Malaclemys appeared to …

Scrubber Design For Phosphoric Acid Production Facility, Edward E. Mayer Apr 1979

Scrubber Design For Phosphoric Acid Production Facility, Edward E. Mayer

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report is an examination of the practical design of a phosphoric acid production facility wet scrubber. It includes a brief background of the Florida Phosphate Industry, in addition to the rules and regulations affecting the emission of fluoride contaminates. The theoretical aspects of a packed absorption tower is discussed prior to the actual design of a cross-flow wet scrubber of the type typically found in the Florida Phosphate Industry.

Heavy Metals In The Water And Wastewater Systems Of The University Of Central Florida, William Keith Mccully Apr 1979

Heavy Metals In The Water And Wastewater Systems Of The University Of Central Florida, William Keith Mccully

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

In large enough quantities, heavy metals may be detrimental to human health. Metals in raw water may pass through a water treatment plant without being completely removed. Once in a the distribution system, the water may experience metal pick-up due to corrosion. During the course of this study, an attempt was made to determine the heavy metal concentrations in the University of Central Florida's potable water systems. Samples were fun on the plasma spectrophotometer, Spectraspan III, and analyzed for heavy metal content. The results indicate pick-up of Fe, Al, Cu, and Zn in the distribution system. The arsenic and lead …

Treatment And Disposal Of Hazardous Wastes In The East Central Florida Region, Tracey Bell Jan 1979

Treatment And Disposal Of Hazardous Wastes In The East Central Florida Region, Tracey Bell

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Although the East Central Florida area is not heavily industrialized, its dependence on groundwater resources makes it especially vulnerable to contamination by poor waste disposal practices. The East Central Florida area was studied to discover the nature and disposal of hazardous wastes generated. It was found that a large portion of hazardous wastes in the region were from very small industries, distributors, and even consumers. Three of the most toxic and/or voluminous waste problems in the area--metal plating wastes, pesticide wastes, and hospital wastes--were studied to determine available alternatives for disposal and their costs.

The Population Dynamics And Distribution Of Corbicula Manilensis (Philippi) In A Spring-Fed Central Florida Stream, Peter K. Gottfried Jan 1979

The Population Dynamics And Distribution Of Corbicula Manilensis (Philippi) In A Spring-Fed Central Florida Stream, Peter K. Gottfried

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Asiatic clams (Corbicula manilensis Philippi) were sampled at twelve stations randomly located along a 16-km stretch of the Wekiva River, Florida, every three months fro August 1976 to June 1977. Clams were found at most stations. Their abundance ranged from 4 to 1210 per m2. Mean numbers of Corbicula were highest at stations where the bottom sediments were primarily sand and lowest at stations where the bottom sediments were silt and decomposing organic matter. A linear relationship between water temperature, water depth, current velocity, total alkalinity, and pH, and the abundance and distribution of Corbicula was not evident. Seasonally, the …

Zooplankton Of The St. Johns River Estuary, Frederick C. Tone Jan 1979

Zooplankton Of The St. Johns River Estuary, Frederick C. Tone

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Zooplankton populations in the St. Johns River Estuary ranged from 3,000/m3 to 20,000/m3 during monthly collections from September, 1973 to August, 1974. Acartia tonsa Dana was the dominant organism throughout the year, except for spring blooms of Balanus sp. nauplii in the lower estuary and summer occurrences of Eubosmin tubins in the upper estuary. With these two exceptions, species composition, and community structure were similar throughout the estuary, year round. A patchy distribution of the zooplankton caused high replicate sample variation which made it difficult to detect small population variations. Salinity appeared to have the greatest effect on the distribution …
