Mass transit vehicles in formal rail service frequently attain speeds which can excited carbody oscillations (primary hunting), as well as sustained lateral oscillations of the trucks (secondary hunting). The carbody motions have been shown to generate passenger discomfort and sustained truck hunting can lead to derailment. This thesis developed approximate equations which predict the carbody hunting frequencies, as well as the hunting speed of an articulated frame truck. The linear equations of motion are derived from a simplified model of a railway vehicle. A comparison indicates the results obtained using the approximate truck hunting equation presented here are within ten …

Carbon Removal Of Organohalides In Drinking Water, William Ray Mccurley

Drinking water samples provided by Orlando Utilities from various locations and from Florida Technological University were analyzed for organohalides. Compounds tentatively identified were 0.0024 mg/l DDT, 0.003 mg/l phosdrin, 0.00036 mg/l BHC, and 0.000095 mg/l endosulfan. These concentrations are well below recommended limits for drinking water. Two water samples were mixed with 10 mg/l of 20-40 mesh granular activated carbon, agitated for 2 minutes and then allowed to settle in the flask for 45 minutes. A reduction in the organohalide concentration varied from 25 to 98 percent of the original concentration. Also, a solution of seven common pesticides of 0.1 …

An in-basket exercise was used to investigate the effects of sex-role stereotypes on selection evaluations of applicants for a management position. The independent variables consisted of (a) sex of the applicant (e.g. Janet N. Davis, James N. Davis) (b) the raters attitude toward women in management positions as measured by a questionnaire, and finally (c) the quality of information (e.g. biographical or behavioral). On the basis of information provided, 28 male and female subjects evaluated the applicants performance potential and suitability for a particular management position. The results confirmed the hypothesis that attitude toward women in management creates a discriminatory …

This paper presents a method of simulating various noise sources in a Weapons Fire Simulator System which has been modeled as an Optical Communication Channel. This Weapons Fire Simulator System is composed of laser transmitters mounted on weapons that fire blank cartridges, and laser receivers mounted on targets. The laser transmitter sends out 'kill' beam pulses to the target whenever blank cartridges are fired. Detection of these pulses at the target signifies a 'hit'. The entire system along with the optical communication channel is simulated in a general purpose computer program called SCEPTRE. This analysis package is an efficient means …

An analysis of an operational industrial acetone reclamation system is performed to ascertain the possibility of its adaptation of solar thermal energy augmentation using fixed orientation, flat plate solar collectors. Currently, the system utilizes and oil fired heater for the thermal input. The water is heated to 185°F (85°C) and circulated through a heat exchanger which is immersed within the contaminated acetone solution. The solvent is thereby vaporized, condensed, and drawn off for reuse. This is a broad study of stormwater infiltration and inflow effects on two sewer systems with an equivalent size for comparison in Brevard County, Florida. The systems are Rockledge, which is located on the highest ground in the area, and Cocoa Beach, which is located down in the local water table. Rainfall data, sewage flow, quality, and flow rates were collected from the Brevard Public Health Department, Cocoa Beach and Rockledge sewage Plants, weather stations, and the Cocoa Water plant. The data indicated minimum, or no infiltration thru the Rockledge wastewater collection system. However, infiltration thru the Cocoa Beach system …

A computer simulation of a thermosyphon system allowing load drawoff and non-ideal weather conditions has been developed. The model is restricted to the more common single cover, flat plate collector system. Using an analysis based on the present literature, this model calculates the energy absorbed by the collector, the temperature distribution through the system, and the corresponding flow rate. Experimental data for a non-ideal day is compared to the computer simulation. Results of this comparison indicate that the desired parameters, flow rate, collector inlet and outlet temperatures, and the mean tank temperature can be predicted by this model to within …

The Motorola Company has developed a microprocessor called the M6800 Microprocessor. While the microprocessor is being configured, it is general practice to develop the software at the same time. This is where simulation of the proposed hardware operation can become very important to the success of the design effort. The simulator duplicates the microprocessor execution of machine language instructions on another computer. The simulator discussed in this paper is denoted the SIM6800. The purpose of this paper is to describe the structure, coding, and execution of the SIM6800 simulator. A User's Guide and sample program have been included.

A Diffraction Model For Prediction Of Radar Signal Attenuation By A Rocket Exhaust Plume, Douglas Harrison Sphar

This report documents the development of a method of estimating the signal attenuation induced by a rocket exhaust plume. The method is applicable to the early system design phase of high energy solid propellant rockets that produce highly ionized exhaust plumes. The method is based on the premise that when a plume is highly ionized, observed signal levels can be explained by assuming the signal propagates around the plume. A simple diffraction at a straight edge model is developed and compared to measured data. The report also provides an overview of exhaust plume electromagnetics and surveys prediction techniques.

Fertile White Leghorn (Gallus gallus) and Bobwhite Quail (Colinus virginianus) were subjected to 15 min exposures produced by burning solid rocket motor (SRM) fuel. Comparative mortality data were collected. Chicken eggs were further used to study the effects of exposure on water relations and blood gas parameters. Chicken embryos exposed once on day 19 or incubation demonstrated and LD50 of 204 ppm; the LD50 for quail embryos was 175 ppm. When mortality was regressed on the final exposure concentration, chicken and quail embryos exposed on days 12 and 19 showed LD50's of 127 and 86 ppm respectively, and embryos exposed …

A study was made of the feasibility of implementing a system of Resource Recovery from the solid wastes of an urban county in Georgia. A review was made of the existing solid waste management practices and present generation rates. A projection of future waste quantities and composition was made. A review of the present state of the art of recovering resources from solid waste was made to determine what systems could be developed for the County. An analysis of the estimated costs during a test year for three alternative systems for disposal was made to determine a least cost alternative. …

The purpose of this research report is to compare two simulation languages; GASP and GPSS. An economical comparison was performed by simulating the same system in each language and examine parameters such as run time, core size, program time, and debug time. A statistical comparison of the results of the system simulation was also performed using a 90% confidence level testing procedure. The system simulated was the proposed Orlando Police Department Automatic Vehicle Locator (AVL) Operational System.

A fixed charge model has been developed for a case study of a total energy power plant involving energy demands for chilled water, high temperature hot water, and electrical power. The Seminole County, Florida solid waste transportation network was examined to determine alternate locations of transfer stations. The scope of this study is limited to transportation and assumed disposal costs. Collection costs are not included. Review of past generation records was conducted and a per capita generation rate of 4 lbs/day was determined. This compared favorably to a 4.06 lbs/day for Orange and Brevard County. The cost per ton for the present solid waste management system was computed and compared to alternative systems. The present system was compared to several alternatives by altering the number and changing the locations of …

Shunt Motor could be constrained to perform in an idealized sense for the static case. A study was undertaken in the Shipping Center of Rohm and Haas Chemical Company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to determine what course of action should be taken to reduce overall costs in a labor oriented shipment preparation operation. This activity, which currently utilizes a complement of twenty-seven people, involves the preshipment labelling and stenciling of product and customer information to metal drums and pails plus various other preparation requirements.
