An Experimental Investigation On The Dynamics Of Bubbles Utilizing Refrigerant R134a Under Pressurized Flow Boiling Conditions, Keon Vereen

Flow boiling heat transfer allows for the dissipation of large amounts of heat. In this work, the effect of heat flux and pressure on flow boiling of liquid refrigerant R-134a is studied in a vertical thin channel. The experimental setup mimics a refrigeration cycle and specifically looks at the effect of pressure and wall heat flux on the departure size and bubble generation rate. The experimental setup consists of a closed loop which includes a vertical narrow rectangular channel and two synchronized high speed cameras for optical measurements at either sides of the channel. A major challenge of developing faster and smaller microelectronic devices is that high flux of heat needs to be removed efficiently to prevent overheating of devices. The conventional way of heat removal using liquid reaches a limit due to low thermal conductivity and limited heat capacity of fluids. Adding solid nanoparticles into fluids has been proposed as a way to enhance thermal conductivity of fluids, but recent results show inconclusive anomalous enhancements in thermal conductivity. Gas turbine engines are prevalent in the today’s aviation and power generation industries. The majority of commercial aircraft use a turbofan gas turbine engines. Gas turbines used for power generation can achieve thermodynamic efficiencies as high as 60% when coupled with a steam turbine as part of a combined cycle. The success of gas turbines is a direct result of a half century’s development of the technology necessary to create such efficient, powerful, and reliable machines.
