Introduction: Septicemia is a severe disease affecting our healthcare system. A local hospital implemented a treatment protocol based on recent national standards to better treat this condition. Childhood obesity is on the rise in the United States, especially among the Southern states and in minority ethnic groups. This condition is a known contributor to many chronic diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, which develop in early adulthood. The Marshallese people - whose population is higher in Northwest Arkansas than anywhere else in the contiguous United States - have a high incidence of obesity and diabetes. Additionally, the Hispanic population per capita in Northwest Arkansas is more than triple that of the state of Arkansas, and have comparable obesity rates to the Marshallese population. Maternal obesity and its correlation to method of delivery are important when determining risk factors and examining adverse events and complications during pregnancy and labor. This study was completed as a retrospective review of the Uniform Data Set (UDS) of midwifery deliveries. It examined maternal body mass indexes (BMIs) pre-pregnancy as well as the impact these BMIs had on the method of delivery. Results of this study determined that there was a relationship between maternal BMI > 30 and the method of delivery. Women with a maternal BMI > 30 are 1.93% more likely to have a Cesarean delivery rather than a …

Body dissatisfaction is becoming a phenomenon in Western culture. Body dissatisfaction is designed for this study as being unhappy with one’s own body, leading to negative mental and physical conditions. In order to test levels of body dissatisfaction and a possible correlation between peer influence and body dissatisfaction, a sample of college sorority women at a southern university were given a survey dealing with peer influence utilizing appearance conversations with friends in one category, and body dissatisfaction in the other. The purpose of this study was to determine the long-term effectiveness of pain management education on patient satisfaction scores. The study sought to determine if the knowledge gained by nurses was retained greater than six months, and then determine if there was a need for a potential refresher course. This study examined the nurses at a community hospital in a mid-sized rural southern state who received an educational presentation on pain management to see if this education had a lasting impact on patient satisfaction scores for that hospital. A retrospective chart review was done using a sample of breastfeeding Hispanic mothers recruited from a large pediatric clinic in Northwest Arkansas in order to examine the impact of a tailored breastfeeding intervention and to identify factors associated with discontinuation of breastfeeding before four months of age. It was hypothesized that Hispanic women who participated in the study would increase their breastfeeding rates compared to Hispanic women who received no intervention. Breastfeeding rates at four months were assessed via self-report in the electronic medical record.
