Putin’S Ukraine Invasion: Turbocharging Sino-Russian Collaboration In Energy, Maritime Security, And Beyond?, Andrew S. Erickson, Gabriel B. Collins

Naval War College Review

Putin’s war of choice in Ukraine will continue to send shock waves across the shores of maritime Asia for years, with unfolding impacts on ecosystems inhabited by oil barrels, gas pipelines, submarine technologies, jet engines, and basing access, within a context of a China-Russia relationship characterized over the centuries by cycles of fear, temporary bonds, and renewed division.

The Euro-Russian Energy Divorce: How Ukraine And Climate Broke Ostpolitik, Emily J. Holland Feb 2023

The Euro-Russian Energy Divorce: How Ukraine And Climate Broke Ostpolitik, Emily J. Holland

Naval War College Review

Russia’s war in Ukraine is forcing a redrawing of global energy flows and a reevaluation of contemporary European security architecture. The war has pushed Europe into a brutal reckoning with its energy dependence on Russia, and European states’ turn toward cleaner energy technology and nuclear will diminish Russia’s place on the European continent, redirecting the latter’s attentions eastward.

Naval War College Review

The geopolitics of the twenty-first century will look very different from that of the twentieth century, but does that mean that the lessons of the latter do not apply to the former? Will competition for oil be eclipsed by that for rare earth metals or lithium, such that the form but not the substance will change? Or does the possibility of achieving self-sufficiency in energy consumption through renewables offer an alternative to interstate resource competition or interdependence? Most importantly, does the challenge of climate change compel Americans to rethink their rivalry with China? Reading The New Map will stimulate thinking …

Energy Security And The Hydrogen Economy, Harvey B. Silverstein Jun 2018

Energy Security And The Hydrogen Economy, Harvey B. Silverstein

Naval War College Review

In seeking alternatives to oil to power the world's economies, most public discussion centers on nuclear solar, wind, water, and coal power. Little considered, because little known, is the possibility of an energy system based on hydrogen.
