Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)
I attended the IPE Grand Rounds hosted by Jefferson Students for Interprofessional Education (JSIPE) with the Palliative Care Team. There were several different health care professionals present on the panel that explained their specific and individualized roles within the Palliative Care team, as well how these roles united to help them function best as a group. The panel demonstrated these specific roles with a case presentation that also helped illustrate some of the conflicts they face on a daily basis, and how they overcome these conflicts to best serve their patients.

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)
In October 2014 I participated in a TeamSTEPPS® interprofessional (IP) learning activity that has already positively affected my performance in my first clinical field-work rotation. An IP team of professors from the nursing, occupational therapy, medicine, and pharmacy programs hosted the learning activity. Potential difficulty of cross-disciplinary interaction was noted from the beginning as students from each discipline sat in groups despite encouragement to split up. However, with direction from the professors, we formed small interdisciplinary groups and participated in a teamwork-focused icebreaker followed by a lecture about the origins and techniques of the TeamSTEPPS® system. After the lecture we …

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)
Background: IPE and Practice-based Learning
It is well established that there is a need for Interprofessional Education (IPE) in the current landscape of health education1 and students that participate in IPE enjoy these experiences and develop skills in interprofessional teamwork that prepare them for future team-based practice.2,3,4 IPE, however, is not standardized. It ranges from programs that teach theoretical frameworks in a classroom setting to others that allow interprofessional teams of students to work together in a clinical setting.5,6 The second form is referred to as practice-based learning (PrBL).3 PrBL is now considered by experts as one of the most …

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)
Healthcare providers may not be prepared to incorporate cultural and spiritual aspects of patient care within their practice. The cultural and spiritual toolbox project will increase the opportunity for those working in a local three campus hospital system to deliver patient-centered care at the bedside by helping them recognize the nuances of various cultures and religions. An interprofessional team convened over a one year period to explore how these aspects of care could be met.
To this end, the team researched and developed a “Cultural and Spiritual Toolbox” which offers information in an online format. This project will be fully …

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)
As the spring semester comes to a close, we in the Jefferson Center for InterProfessional Education (JCIPE) reflect on the last year. In the Fall 2014 edition of the Interprofessional Education and Care Newsletter, we presented several innovative IPE projects from students, faculty and our colleagues overseas. The articles in this edition build on that progress, high-lighting our efforts, redefined during a January 2015 Jefferson IPE retreat facilitated by Dr. Malcolm Cox, to more closely link IPE and clinical practice. To this end, the spring semester marked the conclusion of the first administration of our revised Jefferson Health Mentors Program …

The iVolution is here. It is iThis and iThat every way you turn. Is this just another iFad, or is it truly revolutionizing education? In a recent survey conducted by EDUCAUSE Center for Analysis and Research on undergraduates and technology, 31% of students reported owning tablet technology a 15% increase from the previous year and 76% of students reported owning smart phones. This finding was a 14% increase from the previous year. Students also reported using smart devices in class to access material, participate in activities, look up information and photograph material as learning strategies. Thomas Jefferson University is riding …

The delivery of quality care is best done by a group of practitioners who can effectively communicate and utilize the ‘team decision making approach’ to solve patient/client/person care issues. Organizations such as the WHO advise us that “after almost 50 years of inquiry, there is now sufficient evidence to indicate that interprofessional education enables effective collaborative practice which in turn optimizes health-services, strengthens health systems and improves health outcomes” (2010, p18). The need to implement interprofessional team based approaches to patient care is important. What is also essential is the need to provide interprofessional learning opportunities for today’s health care …

Welcome to the Spring 2014 edition of the Jefferson Center for Interprofessional Education (JCIPE) newsletter. In this edition of our newsletter, you will have a chance to read about two new innovations in technology designed to enhance interprofessional education and collaborative practice. We believe that integrating technology into IPE will be central to aligning health care education reforms with changes in healthcare delivery. This Spring also marks the graduation of our 6th cohort of JHMP students at TJU. Now, over 4,100 students have completed this longitudinal IPE curriculum; feedback from graduates has been highly positive, detailing the impact of …

Developing A Tool To Assess Students' Attitudes Toward Chronic Illness, Jon Veloski
Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)
The goals of many interprofessional programs involvechanging students' attitudes. Jefferson Attitudes towardChronic Illness Survey (Jefferson CIS), which has beenused to assess the attitudes of perceptions toward chronicillness care of nearly 2,000 Jefferson students since 2007,provides a case study of some of the best practices used todevelop a credible tool to evaluate attitudinal changefollowing curricula designed to improve chronic illnesscare skills. Previous work demonstrates that healthprofessionals and students often report negative biasestowards care of those with chronic illness or disability.1,2,3 Although the details are available elsewhere,4 thefollowing highlights key methods and representativefindings from the initial validation study for the Survey.

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)
Interprofessional simulation has been a mainstay of a Jefferson education for almost a decade. Since the opening of the Hamilton Building in 2007, opportunities for interprofessional simulation have grown exponentially at the University. In response to this rapid growth, an Interprofessional Simulation Curriculum Committee (ISCC) was established by Dr. Michael Vergare, Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs in 2010. Committee members include representatives from nursing, medicine, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and pharmacy. The overarching goal of the ISCC is to promote and support the development of interprofessional education via simulation as a teaching/ learning strategy for faculty and students on …

Welcome to the latest edition of the JCIPE Interprofessional Education and Care Newsletter! Since our last edition, we have had some changes at JCIPE. First, founding Co-Director Dr. Molly Rose has begun a phased retirement and stepped down from her JCIPE position. Although parting is always bittersweet, we are thrilled that Molly is continuing to champion interprofessional education from her position in the Jefferson School of Nursing (JSN), and also still serving as chair of our Evaluation Workgroup. At the same time, transitions bring us the joy of new partners – and we are delighted to introduce Elizabeth Speakman, EdD, …

National Transplantation Pregnancy Registry Celebrates 20th Anniversary
Jefferson Surgical Solutions
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the National Transplantation Pregnancy Registry (NTPR). Established at Jefferson, this unique registry is a voluntary study, in which transplant recipients (both men and women) report their experiences with conception, pregnancy, childbirth, and the health of the recipient. The NTPR was founded by Principal Investigator Vincent Armenti, MD, PhD, a Jefferson alumnus and former transplant fellow with a dual faculty appointment as Professor in the Department of Surgery (Transplantation Division) and the Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology.
Dr. Armenti’s interest was sparked two decades ago when a transplant recipient told him she …
