Sentinel events in health care are rare events, often corresponding with permanent injury or death. Fires in the operating room (OR) are one type of sentinel event. Although rare due to possible life-threatening injuries to patients and staff, appropriate surgical fire education is critical in nurse anesthesia education, as anesthesia providers play a significant role in surgical fires (Wunder et al., 2020). The purpose of this doctoral project was to create a learning and evaluation tool on Transversus Abdominis Plane (TAP) blocks to be used by students in the Nurse Anesthesia program (NAP) at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM). Students can use this tool to help facilitate learning and skills in regional anesthesia techniques. An Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) for ultrasound-guided TAP blocks was created and evaluated by the USM NAP faculty and current second and third-year NAP students. The purpose of this doctoral project was to create a tool to teach student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) in The University of Sothern Mississippi’s (USM’s) anesthesia program about pressure control and volume control ventilator modes, and how to use them. Student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) are educated in nurse anesthesia programs so they can one day become certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs). Through the training program, SRNAs work in the anesthesia setting to apply what they learn from the classroom setting. Chipas and Mckenna (2011) found that SRNAs are more stressed than CRNAs. Melius (2012) looked at math anxiety and found a correlation between high math anxiety and poor math performance in nurses. Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are at risk for perioperative respiratory and cardiovascular compromise (Opperer et al., 2016). Unfortunately, almost 90% of patients with moderate-to-severe OSA are not diagnosed and unaware of their disorder; however, they remain at increased perioperative risks (Singh et al., 2015). The STOP-BANG questionnaire was developed to meet the need for a reliable, concise, and efficient screening tool for OSA risk. The aim of this best practice guideline (BPG) was to be a resource for anesthesia providers practicing with obese patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and to measure the knowledge of these providers. After dissemination of an executive summary to anesthesia providers in two hospitals in rural Mississippi, an anonymous online survey was provided via Qualtrics software for voluntary participation. The survey consisted of 10 questions. The data collection period was five weeks. This Doctor of Nurse Practice (DNP) project emphasizes the importance of developing culturally competent providers in anesthesia by promoting early outreach in cultural competence education of SRNAs. Orthopedic and neurologic cases routinely reach noise levels exceeding 120 decibels (Katz, 2014). Modern equipment and monitors used by anesthesia personnel only reach 85 decibels (Katz, 2014). Postoperative delirium is a potentially life-threatening change in cognition that occurs approximately 24 to 72 hours after surgery and is a frequent complication affecting the elderly population. The development of this postoperative complication has been found to increase mortality and morbidity, prolong hospital stays, and has also been associated with a steady decline in cognition. Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a common problem in the surgical setting. It affects as much as 20 to 80 percent of patients undergoing surgery (D'souza, Swami, & Bhagwat, 2011). PONV can lead to increased patient costs and recovery time by causing the patient to stay in the healthcare facility for a longer period of time. A retrospective cohort study was completed to examine whether or not there was a significant difference between patients who received 4mg and 8mg of dexamethasone in the incidence of PONV. Studies have been done that link various measurements of workplace productivity with varying levels of individual health. A thorough literature review examined the research to find any significant relation between regular exercise (as defined by the American Heart Association) and an improvement in workplace productivity among anesthesia providers. A Qualtrics survey was used to measure specific results regarding exercise activity and work productivity from anesthesia providers. This group included 53 certified registered nurse anesthetists and anesthesiologists.
