Nestled within the Southeastern United States Turtle Priority Area, Mississippi boasts impressive freshwater turtle diversity and is home to 8.6% of extant turtle species. Despite this impressive richness, few studies have assessed freshwater turtle assemblages in this hotspot of aquatic diversity. This research aimed to elucidate the distributions and abundances of freshwater turtle species through a statewide investigation of all major river drainages of the state. Using baited hoop nets (90 cm and 120 cm diameter), turtles were collected, identified to species and sex, and measured, before being released. In this thesis, we develop an accurate algorithm for computing the smallest eigenvalues of the self-adjoint spatial differential operator for the two-dimensional heat equation with a piecewise constant coefficient and periodic boundary conditions. The piecewise constant coefficient is created by the discontinuity of the diffusivity coefficient across the interfaces between two or more heterogeneous materials. Our method involves the combination of the well-known Inverse Iteration with a multigrid homotopy.

Organized into 71, 121, and 133 Squadrons, collectively known as the Eagle Squadrons, these foreign volunteers present an intriguing avenue of soldier motivation analysis. War is traumatic. Since the American Psychiatric Association first recognized post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in 1980, living veterans of combat have been diagnosed at an alarmingly high rate. However, mental trauma related diagnoses have existed for centuries, including several that were identified around the time of the American Civil War. This thesis argues that Civil War soldiers experienced mental trauma related to their military service. It does so through three lenses. The goal of this study was to test this proposition using a sample of contact period Maya from the site of Tipu in western Belize. We discuss some issues with Bailey's stochastic model and argue that it may not be a viable theoretical platform for a more general epidemic model. A possible alternative approach to the solution of Bailey's stochastic model and stochastic modeling is proposed as well.
