Nonprofit Welfare-To-Work Programs: A Study Of The Programmatic Factors Related To Success For Single Tanf Women In Readiness Programs, Kathy Guidi

Master's Theses

This research project was a qualitative study with data collected primarily through interviews with three constituencies of welfare-to-work job readiness programs: TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families) clients, nonprofit agency staff, and Department of Human Services (DHS) CalWORKs Department employment specialists. Specifically, six TANF clients, six nonprofit agency staff, and two DHS CalWORKs Department employment specialists were interviewed by the researcher. The study was conducted to determine which programmatic factors were related to success for single T ANF women participating in nonprofit organizations' work readiness programs in San Francisco. Program factors were divided into four areas: program model/structure, program curriculum, …

Electrical Resistivity Of A Thin Metallic Film, Horacio E. Camblong Dec 1999

Electrical Resistivity Of A Thin Metallic Film, Horacio E. Camblong

Physics and Astronomy

The electrical resistivity of a pure sample of a thin metallic film is found to depend on the boundary conditions. This conclusion is supported by a free-electron model calculation and confirmed by an ab initio relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker computation. The low-temperature resistivity is found to be zero for a free-standing film (reflecting boundary conditions) but nonzero when the film is sandwiched between two semi-infinite samples of the same material (outgoing boundary conditions). In the latter case, this resistivity scales inversely with the number of monolayers and is due to the background diffusive scattering by a finite lattice.

Community Foundations Serving Rural Regions: A Study Of Rural-Serving Community Foundations Located In Northern California, Michele B. Finstad Oct 1999

Community Foundations Serving Rural Regions: A Study Of Rural-Serving Community Foundations Located In Northern California, Michele B. Finstad

Master's Theses

This research project-a qualitative study with data collected primarily through interviews-was conducted to determine whether there are notable characteristics common to community foundations serving rural regions, and whether these characteristics differ from those of other community foundations in general. The framework developed for this research project was adapted from three empirical studies, each emphasizing specific characteristics related to organizational development and community foundations. The first study (Agard, 1992) examined the administrative, social, strategic, and technical systems of community foundations with regard to growth and change over time at different ages and asset sizes. The second study (Mayer, 1994) addressed the …

Chief Executive Officers Of California Environmental Organizations: A Study Of Personal Values Congruence With Organizational Mission, Christine Marie Schmidt May 1999

Chief Executive Officers Of California Environmental Organizations: A Study Of Personal Values Congruence With Organizational Mission, Christine Marie Schmidt

Master's Theses

This study surveyed the Chief Executive Officers of 300 California environmental organizations to investigate whether these officers were personally committed to their organizations' missions as demonstrated by 1) past and present activities in their personal lives that indicated personal values similar to those espoused by the organization, and 2) their intent to stay with their organization. It was hypothesized that the level of activity in the personal lives of the CEOs demonstrating personal commitment to their organizations would be positively related to their intent to stay with their organizations. It was also expected that there would be a negative association …

The Effect Of Community Service On High School Students' Perceptions Of Nonprofit And Public Organizations, Lara Pepp Rajninger May 1999

The Effect Of Community Service On High School Students' Perceptions Of Nonprofit And Public Organizations, Lara Pepp Rajninger

Master's Theses

This study is designed to determine whether early exposure to nonprofit organizations through a hands-on volunteer experience increases students' knowledge of and affects students' attitudes toward pursuing a nonprofit career, a lifestyle of service, or both. The results from the survey instrument were analyzed by a comparison of scores, means, standard deviations, paired t-tests, independent t-tests, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's honestly significant difference (Tukey's HSD).

The results of this research indicate that students perceive that volunteering in the nonprofit sector has a positive influence on their attitudes toward nonprofit organizations, prompting a desire for a philanthropic lifestyle. For …

From The Editor, Jean-Pierre Ruiz

Journal of Hispanic / Latino Theology

The essays in this issue of the Journal of Hispanic/Latino Theology testify to the ways in which our theologies continue to regard fidelity to the Gospel and to the experience of our communities in Latin America and in the U.S. as standards for the integrity of our theological efforts.

La Parroquia Urbana, Benjamín Bravo May 1999

La Parroquia Urbana, Benjamín Bravo

Journal of Hispanic / Latino Theology

This article examines the impact of increasing, mass urbanization in the Americas on the structures, functions and modalities of parish communities as a focal point of local churches. Addressing the contention of some pastoral practitioners and theoreticians that models of parish with their origins in rural settings have outlived their usefulness, this study begins with an analysis of the phenomenon of urbanization itself. Assessing such factors as population, public services, industrialization, cultural diversity, tolerance, territorial and social mobility and participation in democratic processes, the essay turns to consider the urban parish itself as the Church's response to the realities of …

Hispanic Theologians As Actors, Poets And Prophets Of Their Communities, Sixto J. García May 1999

Hispanic Theologians As Actors, Poets And Prophets Of Their Communities, Sixto J. García

Journal of Hispanic / Latino Theology

The author proposes that while the Hispanic theologian must be an intimate participant and protagonist in his or her community, s/he is also called to maintain keep a necessary critical distance in relation to their living, active participation. Ultimately, theologians must ply their craft from within the lived religiosity of their communities. This means being a sensitive interpreter of the metaphors and symbols that communicate the community’s experience of the sacred. This role of poet-participant finds its best expression in the prophetic mission and identity of the theologian, who looks at his /her vulnerable, powerless, violence-stricken community through the surplus-giving …

Masking Hispanic Racism: A Cuban Case Study, Miguel A. De La Torre May 1999

Masking Hispanic Racism: A Cuban Case Study, Miguel A. De La Torre

Journal of Hispanic / Latino Theology

This essay considers the way identity performances and theological claims of white Cuban theologians masks the long-historical racism that has haunted Cuban culture throughout its history. The author considers concerns among today’s Black Cubans that national reconciliation Miami-style may reimpose silence and secondarity upon them as citizens. They fear any attempt by exilic Cubans to radically change the present government in La Habana, lest it creates a one-way empowerment of White Cubans once again. True Cuban reconciliation must confront Cuban White supremacism. Otherwise national “reconciliation” would occur only among white Cubans on both sides of the Florida Straits, excluding Black …

Time Delay In The Kuramoto Model Of Coupled Oscillators, Stephen M.K. Yeung, S H. Strogatz Jan 1999

Time Delay In The Kuramoto Model Of Coupled Oscillators, Stephen M.K. Yeung, S H. Strogatz

Mathematics

We generalize the Kuramoto model of coupled oscillators to allow time-delayed interactions. New phenomena include bistability between synchronized and incoherent states, and unsteady solutions with time-dependent order parameters. We derive exact formulas for the stability boundaries of the incoherent and synchronized states, as a function of the delay, in the special case where the oscillators are identical. The experimental implications of the model are discussed for populations of chirping crickets, where the finite speed of sound causes communication delays, and for physical systems such as coupled phase-locked loops or lasers.

Credit Access, Human Capital And Class Structure Mobility, Bruce Wydick Jan 1999

Credit Access, Human Capital And Class Structure Mobility, Bruce Wydick

Economics

This paper examines the impact of microenterprise credit programs on class structure mobility in developing countries. The paper develops a model that endogenously generates an eight-fold class structure. Class membership is determined by optimal choice of labour activity, which is a function of access to credit and human capital endowments. Predictions from the model suggest that better access to credit will foster upward class mobility among self-employed entrepreneurs, and that this upward class mobility will be accentuated among entrepreneurs with high levels of human capital. Theoretical predictions from the model are compared with data on class structure mobility collected firsthand …

Relationship Between Udp-Glucose 4-Epimerase Activity And Oligoglucose Glycoforms In Two Strains Of Neisseria Meningitidis, F K. Lee, B W. Gibson, William Melaugh, A Zaleski, M A. Apicella Jan 1999

Relationship Between Udp-Glucose 4-Epimerase Activity And Oligoglucose Glycoforms In Two Strains Of Neisseria Meningitidis, F K. Lee, B W. Gibson, William Melaugh, A Zaleski, M A. Apicella

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel analysis of lipooligosaccharide (LOS) from Neisseria meningitidis has demonstrated considerable microheterogeneity in the variable region of LOS due to the presence of novel glycoforms. As a step toward understanding the basis for the expression of these novel glycoforms, we have examined the LOS structures and UDP-glucose 4-epimerase (epimerase) activity levels in two strains (NMB and MA-1) and their respective galE mutants. Strain NMB was found to have low epimerase activity and to contain multiple glycoforms, some of which appear to contain only glucose sugars. The galE mutant had only the oligoglucose glycoforms. Strain MA-1 had higher …

Experimental And Theoretical Investigations Of The Structure And The Stability Of The Bnsi Molecule, Giovanni Meloni, R Viswanathan Jan 1999

Experimental And Theoretical Investigations Of The Structure And The Stability Of The Bnsi Molecule, Giovanni Meloni, R Viswanathan

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Theoretical computations were carried out to determine the structure and molecular parameters of the BNSi molecule. The most stable isomer is found to have a BNSi linear geometry. Thermal functions as derived from the theoretical computed molecular parameters were used in the evaluation of the thermodynamic properties of BNSi from high-temperature Knudsen effusion mass spectrometric equilibrium data. From the reactions analyzed by the second-law and third-law methods, the enthalpy of formation,ΔfHo0, and of atomization, ΔaHo0, in kJ mol−1, for BNSi, were obtained as 398±16 and 1078±17, respectively.

Thermodynamic Investigation Of The Ainc And Aicn Isomers By Knudsen Cell Mass Spectrometry, Giovanni Meloni, Karl A. Gingerich

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Equilibria involving the isomers AlNC and AlCN above a mixture of aluminum nitride, graphite, and gold contained in a graphite Knudsen cell were investigated with a mass spectrometer. The enthalpies of formation,ΔfHo0, and of atomization, ΔaHo0, in kJ mol−1, for AlNC and AlCN, were derived as 281.3±14 and 303.8±14, and as 1228.1±15 and 1205.6±15, respectively.

Neutron Stars And Black Holes As Machos, Aparna Venkatesan, Angela V. Olinto, James W. Truran Jan 1999

Neutron Stars And Black Holes As Machos, Aparna Venkatesan, Angela V. Olinto, James W. Truran

Physics and Astronomy

We consider the contribution of neutron stars and black holes to the dynamical mass of galactic halos. In particular, we show that if these compact objects were produced by an early generation of stars with initial metallicity 10-4 Z, they can contribute at most 30%-40% of the Galactic halo mass without creating supersolar levels of enrichment. We show that the case for halo neutron stars and black holes cannot be rejected on metal overproduction arguments alone because of the critical factor of the choice of progenitor metallicity in determining the yields. We show that this scenario satisfies …
