Stroke Outreach In The Lao Community, Noor A. Dythavon Dec 2016

Stroke Outreach In The Lao Community, Noor A. Dythavon

Master's Projects and Capstones

CNL Abstract

A community health needs assessment for the service area prompted concern regarding access to quality healthcare for non-English speaking Southeast Asians (SEA) in the area. Goals of an initial investigation and subsequent implementation of sustainable stroke health fairs for non-English speaking communities were evaluated to assess primary healthcare concerns that the SEA community face and to suggest long-term solutions to these issues. Initial investigation required researching population-specific minority health statistics to quantify the prevalence of chronic diseases and conditions which were prioritized in terms of needs versus disparities. Research came from evidence base practice guidelines and personal concern …

Sleep Apnea Equipment’S For Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Yogamba Shivakumar Dec 2016

Sleep Apnea Equipment’S For Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Yogamba Shivakumar

Master's Projects and Capstones

Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a common chronic disorder that is often been ignored and not considered in the society compared to other chronic disorders. The prevalence of Obstructive Sleep Apnea is very much linked to the obesity. Sleep apnea is caused due to recurrent episodes of upper airway obstruction during sleep that is caused by elevations in upper airway collapsibility during sleep. The underlying anatomic alterations and disturbances in upper airway neuromuscular control, plays key roles in the pathogenesis of obstructive sleep apnea. It can increase pharyngeal collapsibility through mechanical effects on pharyngeal soft tissues and lung volume and through …

Historical Trauma And Refugee Reception: Armenians And Syrian-Armenian Co-Ethnics, Nicole M. Campos Dec 2016

Historical Trauma And Refugee Reception: Armenians And Syrian-Armenian Co-Ethnics, Nicole M. Campos

Master's Theses

This thesis considers the ways in which Armenian history has influenced integration of Syrian-Armenian refugees into Armenia due to the ongoing Syrian War. Ethnic Armenian outlooks were analyzed relative to the influx of Syrian refugees, particularly co-ethnic Syrian-Armenians. Field work in Armenia found a sustained cultural impression of Armenians’ Soviet membership and genocide. Findings suggest that recognizing the importance of history as it may or may not affect migration reception policies and attitudes is important to developing sustainable resettlement environments, at least until repatriation or third-country resettlement becomes an option to migrants. Ultimately, this thesis argues that more attention must …

The Eurasian Agenda: The International Relations Of Kyrgyzstan, Azamat Baiyzbekov Dec 2016

The Eurasian Agenda: The International Relations Of Kyrgyzstan, Azamat Baiyzbekov

Master's Theses

The disintegration of the Soviet Union and the emergence of the newly independent states in Central Asia are among the most important historical events of the 20th century. As one of these newly independent and sovereign state, Kyrgyzstan found itself in the sphere of the geopolitical rivalry among the Great Powers, such as the U.S., Russia, and China. Even though a relatively small and militarily weak state, Kyrgyzstan came to play an important role in their Eurasian agenda. In this thesis, I examine in detail the international relations of Kyrgyzstan with all its neighboring states, but focus extensively on …

The Acidic Sulfonimidation Of Aryl–Oxazolines And The Electrophilic Fluorination Of Aryl–Oxazolines, David Gutierrez Dec 2016

The Acidic Sulfonimidation Of Aryl–Oxazolines And The Electrophilic Fluorination Of Aryl–Oxazolines, David Gutierrez

Master's Theses

Aryl oxazolines have been employed as directing groups for several different coupling reactions. In the exploration of using phenyl oxazoline as a directing group for electrophilic fluorination, it was discovered that acidic sulfonimide nucleophiles including dibenzenesulfonimide, o–benzenesulfonimide, dimethanesulfonimide, and N–(methylsulfonyl)–benzenesulfonamide are discovered to open a variety of alkyl, aryl and heteroaryl–2–oxazoline rings to provide the sulfonimidation products in refluxing 1,4–dioxane. The electron rich 2–oxazoline substrates worked well for the nucleophilic ring opening reactions while no reaction took place for the electron poor 2–oxazoline substrates. 4,4–dimethyl–2–phenyl–2–oxazoline was thus rationally designed inhibit sulfonimidation and to act as a removable ortho directing group …

IMPROVING QUALITY AND EFFICIENT COMMUNICATION BETWEEN

PROVIDERS AND NURSING - A PSYCHIATRIC SBAR TOOL (PSYCH)

Karen Richards

University of San Francisco

Abstract

Effective communication is the cornerstone of providing safety and quality healthcare. However, nursing and providers often share information inequitably, as these disciplines are trained differently regarding communication. Providers are taught to be brief, accurate and focused while nurses are taught to be descriptive and holistic. These differences have led to disparity in the sharing of valuable patient information, subsequently leading to increased frustration, inefficiency, and medical errors. Multiple studies provide evidence that poor communication is a major contributor …

Phylogenetics, Biogeography, And Climate Niche Variation Of South Pacific And Hawaiian Psychotria, Elaine Zhang Dec 2016

Phylogenetics, Biogeography, And Climate Niche Variation Of South Pacific And Hawaiian Psychotria, Elaine Zhang

Master's Theses

Why do some species have broad geographic distributions, while other species are confined to a narrow distribution? Species age, ecological niche, or dispersal traits may help explain why some insular species are abundant and found on many islands, while others are rare and restricted to one island. In this study, I inferred a robust, time-calibrated phylogeny of the Hawaiian Psychotria, using two nuclear and eight chloroplast loci, sampling 67 individuals. I coupled my phylogenetic hypothesis with climatic data, ecological niche modeling, and morphological dispersal characteristics to explain the variation in number of islands occupied by each species. My inferred phylogeny …

Challenging Filipino Colonial Mentality With Philippine Art, Francesca V. Mateo Dec 2016

Challenging Filipino Colonial Mentality With Philippine Art, Francesca V. Mateo

Master's Theses

For 350 years, the Philippines was colonized by Spain and the United States. The Philippines became a sovereign nation in 1946 yet, fifty years later, colonial teachings continue to oppress Filipinos due to their colonial mentality (CM.) CM is an internalized oppression among Filipinos in which they experience an automatic preference for anything Western—European or U.S. American—and rejection of anything Filipino. Although Filipinos show signs of a CM, there are Filipinos who are challenging CM by engaging in Philippine art. Philippine art is defined as Filipino-made visual art, literature, music, and dance intended to promote Philippine culture. This …

Nonpharmacological Approaches In Dementia Care, Gay Lynn Warren

Master's Projects and Capstones

The 6A acute care unit has been seeing a higher number of patients that are afflicted with dementia. Often times, these patients display challenging dementia-related behaviors. It is commonplace for these patients to be medicated with a psychotropic medication in order to halt the challenging behavior. The global aim of this project is to improve dementia care on the 6A acute care unit. The specific aim, educating staff members about the benefits of nonpharmacological approaches in the management of challenging dementia-related behaviors and to encourage their use, is relative as the education is necessary before improvement can be expected to …

The Application Of The Literature Review Appraisal Toolkit On Environmental Health Systematic Reviews, Kristen M. Davis Dec 2016

The Application Of The Literature Review Appraisal Toolkit On Environmental Health Systematic Reviews, Kristen M. Davis

Master's Projects and Capstones

Environmental health systematic reviews have long been of poor quality when comparing them to clinical health systematic reviews. The main reason for the poor quality of environmental health systematic reviews is the lack of a specific protocol. The University of California-San Francisco’s Program for Reproductive Health and the Environment has, because of the discrepancy, created a protocol specific to conducting environmental health systematic reviews. The protocols efforts would be futile without a nonbiased way to evaluate systematic reviews and therefore the protocol used. The Literature Review Appraisal Toolkit is a valuable tool created to navigate and evaluate the credibility of …

Step two consisted of identifying and talking about various possible safe med problems with staff, and taking steps to remove these potential barriers. Step three was to experiment …

Utilizing Pre-Education Assessment And A Targeted Education Module To Enhance Nurse Knowledge Of Standard And Transmissible Precautions, Deborah A. Ard Dec 2016

Utilizing Pre-Education Assessment And A Targeted Education Module To Enhance Nurse Knowledge Of Standard And Transmissible Precautions, Deborah A. Ard

Master's Projects and Capstones

Abstract

The aim of this project was to protect patient safety and prevent healthcare acquired infections by improving nurses’ knowledge of infection prevention practices. A second practical benefit was creating a pilot for an RN education program.

I propose that the reason compliance with hand hygiene is low at any facility can be explained by Rosenstock’s Health Belief Model. Nurses may not believe that 1) There is a high chance of spreading or themselves contracting infectious illness, 2) That the illnesses they are exposed to would be just as serious in them as they are seeing in patients, 3) They …

Evaluation Of The Nursing Handoff Process From Emergency Department To In-Patient Unit, Yana Marutyan Dec 2016

Evaluation Of The Nursing Handoff Process From Emergency Department To In-Patient Unit, Yana Marutyan

Master's Projects and Capstones

Handoff, or transition in care, is known to be a danger point in the patient care process for a long time. Ineffective communication during handoff is one of the most common identified cause of catastrophic or sentinel events in hospitals (The Joint Commission, 2015). Emergency department (ED) to in-patient unit handoff is particularly vulnerable to medical errors due to high workload, time constraints, different approaches to patient care, and lack of established relationships between care providers (Ong & Coiera, 2011; Hilligoss & Cohen, 2012).

The purpose of this project was to examine and review a current process of ED to …

Feminist Herstory Through Indian English Literature, Suryaa Rangarajan Dec 2016

Feminist Herstory Through Indian English Literature, Suryaa Rangarajan

Master's Projects and Capstones

This project explores how the definition of femininity is deeply intertwined with the concept of nationalism, and the performance of cultural duty in order to protect the sanctity of marriage and family. Beginning with investigating how laws and policies have held women back in their status as second-class citizens, unable to exercise their right to feel safe, the chapter will delve into the roles that critical pedagogy and third world feminism play in achieving sustainable equity in India. These policies and theoretical frameworks provide a foundation for my curriculum design project, which uses Indian English feminist literature to amplify monolithic …

Patient Care Sitter Reduction And Fall Safety Improvement, Timothy J. Bock Dec 2016

Patient Care Sitter Reduction And Fall Safety Improvement, Timothy J. Bock

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

The financial constraints imposed upon operational budgets by the frequent use of patient care sitters is well known among hospital leadership. Despite the high labor costs associated with direct and continuous observation, this intervention is routinely deployed by frontline care teams in an effort to preserve patients from harm, particularly from accidental falls. This reality creates an opportunity where significant budget savings can be achieved by supplanting the use of patient care sitters with more effective fall prevention strategies. This quality improvement (QI) project implemented a non-psychiatric sitter reduction and fall prevention initiative in two high volume adult acute care …

An Architectural Framework For Evidence-Based Practice Diffusion, Dissemination, And Institutionalization, Betty C. Lopez Dnp,Mpa,Rn,Cenp Dec 2016

An Architectural Framework For Evidence-Based Practice Diffusion, Dissemination, And Institutionalization, Betty C. Lopez Dnp,Mpa,Rn,Cenp

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Technology, innovation, and a demand for the safest, value-added healthcare have led to the proliferation of research studies. Unfortunately the evidence from most of those studies has yet to be applied to evidence-based practice (EBP) projects. Much of this research and many of EBP projects remain waiting to be retrieved, analyzed, translated, and applied to everyday practice. A finding from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is that it takes approximately 10 years to integrate research evidence into practice (Rogers, 2009). Recent studies recognize nurses as a vehicle to shorten the research-to-practice 10-year journey; nurses are realized as …

U.S. Veterans are a vulnerable patient population, more prone to health disparities as compared to the general population. There are 21.8 million Veterans currently in the United States, with the majority receiving their healthcare outside of the Veteran Health Administration. Veterans form a culture that is steeped in military tradition and it is essential that healthcare providers have knowledge regarding this vulnerable population to provide care that is culturally appropriate. In response to the Veteran healthcare crisis, the Department of Veteran Affairs initiated the Veteran Affairs Nursing Academy Partnership (VANAP), a joint venture between VHA medical centers and schools …

Notions Of Discontent And Distinction: Reflections Of Young Diasporic Taiwanese Americans, Andrew T. Chen Dec 2016

Notions Of Discontent And Distinction: Reflections Of Young Diasporic Taiwanese Americans, Andrew T. Chen

Master's Theses

In 1971, Taiwan lost its seat in the United Nations and has been vying for international validation ever since. The Kuomintang’s (KMT) loss and the development of Taiwan’s democracy has left millions with varying opinions pertaining to the status of Taiwan. It also brings up the importance of what it means to be Taiwanese and how Taiwanese people identify and distinguish themselves from China. For much of the Republic of China’s (ROC) existence in Taiwan the independence movement for the de facto nation-state has lived outside of its borders, making achievements and enduring hardships for Taiwan and Taiwanese Americans throughout …

Reducing Mortality From Severe Sepsis And Septic Shock: A Macro System Approach, Scott D. Baker Dec 2016

Reducing Mortality From Severe Sepsis And Septic Shock: A Macro System Approach, Scott D. Baker

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Healthcare organizations must be able to provide quality patient care from arrival to disposition that is both expedient and safe. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality ranks septicemia as the number one most expensive condition treated in U.S. hospitals, resulting in aggregate costs of $20.3 billion or 5.2% of the total aggregate cost for all hospitalizations. Starting October 2015, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services began tying financial reimbursement to improvement of sepsis outcomes. For success to be achieved, organizations should partner with prehospital providers to improve sepsis care, similar to partnerships which have historically improved acute myocardial …

Using Multi-Modal Education In A Public Health System To Increase Rates Of Cervical Cancer Screening, Christina Nardi Dec 2016

Using Multi-Modal Education In A Public Health System To Increase Rates Of Cervical Cancer Screening, Christina Nardi

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

While Papanicolaou (Pap) screening has been implemented since the 1950’s, and is linked to decreased rates of cervical cancer, national screening rates are still below the national target screening rate. In Contra Costa County (CCC), the current cervical cancer screening rate is 50.92% (Contra Costa Health Services [CCHS], 2016a). This is far below the national goal of 93% and the first benchmark of 54.33% needed in order to receive state funding under the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) Medi-Cal 2020 waiver. The Medi-Cal 2020 waiver has a 5-year Public Health Incentives and Redesign in Medi-Cal (PRIME) program requiring …

Optimizing Engagement In The Acute Care Setting: A Nurse Driven Staffing Model, Denise D. Fall Dec 2016

Optimizing Engagement In The Acute Care Setting: A Nurse Driven Staffing Model, Denise D. Fall

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Health care is on the threshold of major reform. Central to this reform will be the ability to maximize patient outcomes and resource allocation. The delivery of nursing care is essential to these concepts. Nursing care delivery impacts both patient outcomes and labor costs. Every aspect of care delivery has changed over time: length of stay, acuity, payment methodologies, documentation, technology, and regulatory requirements. Yet the model by which we allocate resources to the bedside is based on an archaic notion and forecasting model around one variable. The development of effective nurse staffing strategies will ensure those delivering care are …

Improving Employee Engagement Through The Development Of An Enterprise Performance Management System, Carlton D. Abner Dec 2016

Improving Employee Engagement Through The Development Of An Enterprise Performance Management System, Carlton D. Abner

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

There is ample evidence of our health care delivery system relying heavily on value-based outcomes. The increased focus on outcomes has required health care organizations to adjust how they approach data and how they successfully implement performance management systems. These performance management systems help the organization identify, measure, and report the organization’s performance at an enterprise level using key performance indicators clearly linked to the organization’s overall strategy. As one organization began implementing an enterprise performance management system, the goal of this project was to show how participating in projects with that level of strategic impact can lead to improved …

The Museum’s tours cover children’s education materials for second and third grade students in the San Francisco Bay Area. I propose creating pre-visit materials …

Creating Exhibits For Small History Museums On A Limited Budget, Annveig Bugge Dec 2016

Creating Exhibits For Small History Museums On A Limited Budget, Annveig Bugge

Master's Projects and Capstones

In this capstone project, I study the process of developing an exhibition for small history museums. Working with the Treasure Island Museum, a small history museum in San Francisco, I explore the different options for developing exhibitions for small history museums, with small budgets, in contrast to the more well funded practice that larger museums have the opportunity to produce. For museums, exhibits are the media used to communicate with visitors, and it is important to install new ones regularly. Being limited by budget and staff constraints this can be a challenge, but I argue that the benefits from the …
