Tb175: A Numerical Method And Supporting Database For Evaluation Of Maine Peatlands As Candidtate Natural Areas, Ronald B. Davis, Dennis S. Anderson
Technical Bulletins
In Maine, non-tidal peatlands comprise the last major terrestrial ecosystem group remaining largely undisturbed by humans, and for which there still exists a full range of options for protection in near-pristine condition. To make the best choices of areas to protect, ecologically based prioritization of candidate natural areas is needed. This technical bulletin presents a quantitative method of evaluation of the natural features of peatlands—providing the fundamental tool for establishing peatland protection priorities. We apply the method to the evaluation of 76 Maine peatlands representing all the morphologic/hydrologic peatland types in the biophysical regions of the state.

Teaching: A Demanding Job In High Demand, Kay Hyatt
General University of Maine Publications
Increasingly, Maine is confronting the national problem of filling teaching positions, particularly at the middle school and high school levels, and key leadership posts with well-prepared, highly qualified educators. Even though the state is not experiencing a surge in K-12 enrollment like some other areas of the county, its well-established, senior teaching force is reaching retirement in great proportions.

Seasonal Distributions Of Satellite-Measured Phytoplankton Pigment Concentration Along The Chilean Coast, Andrew Thomas
Seasonal Distributions Of Satellite-Measured Phytoplankton Pigment Concentration Along The Chilean Coast, Andrew Thomas
Marine Sciences Faculty Scholarship
Five years (1979-1983) of Coastal Zone Color Scanner satellite ocean color data are used to examine seasonal patterns of phytoplankton pigment concentration along the Chilean coast from 20 degrees S to 45 degrees S. Four kilometer resolution, 2-4 day composites document the presence of filaments of elevated pigment concentration extending offshore throughout the study area, with maximum offshore extension at higher latitudes. In three years, 1979, 1981, and 1983, sufficient data exist in monthly composites to allow recreation of portions of the seasonal cycle. Data in 1979 are the most complete. Near-shore concentrations and cross-shelf extension of pigment concentrations in …
