B832: The Profitability Of Supplemental Irrigation For Maine Potatoes, Michele C. Marra, Timothy A. Woods

The question has arisen among Maine potato growers and other industry personnel whether irrigation technologies can be transferred successfully into humid growing areas such as in Maine and whether they can benefit the Maine potato industry. This report presents the findings of a stud y that attempts to answer the question of whether adoption of two of these newer technologies might be profitable for an individual grower in Maine.

Readers of this Newsletter will be saddened to hear of the death of Dr. Helen Creighton, Canada's foremost collector of folksongs, on Tuesday, December 12, [1989], in Halifax. She was 90 years old. There is little I can add to Stephen Pedersen's fine article from the Halifax Chronicle-Herald (12/16/89) reprinted below beyond a couple of recollections of my own.

Pluralism, a concept which is growing in importance at the University, is easily considered in the abstract as a positive but vague goal. The USAID-sponsored CASS (Cooperative Association States for Scholarships) program is playing a significant role in transforming cultural diversity from an abstract ideal to a tangible reality.
