Linking Remote Sensing And Various Site Factors For Predicting The Spatial Distribution Of Eastern Hemlock Occurrence And Relative Basal Area In Maine, Usa, Kathleen Dunckel, Aaron Weiskittel, Greg Fiske, Steven A. Sader, Erika Latty, Amy Arnett Dec 2015

Sader, Erika Latty, Amy Arnett

Publications

Introduced invasive pests are perhaps the most important and persistent catalyst for changes in forest composition. Infestation and outbreak of the hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae; HWA) along the eastern coast of the USA, has led to widespread loss of hemlock (Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carr.), and a shift in tree species composition toward hardwood stands. Developing an understanding of the geographic distribution of individual species can inform conservation practices that seek to maintain functional capabilities of ecosystems. Modeling is necessary for understanding changes in forest composition, and subsequent changes in biodiversity, and one that can be implemented at the species …

Public Preferences For Investments In Renewable Energy Production And Energy Efficiency, Caroline L. Noblet, Mario F. Teisl, Keith S. Evans, Mark W. Anderson, Shannon Mccoy, Edmund Cervone Dec 2015

Public Preferences For Investments In Renewable Energy Production And Energy Efficiency, Caroline L. Noblet, Mario F. Teisl, Keith S. Evans, Mark W. Anderson, Shannon Mccoy, Edmund Cervone

Publications

In this paper we investigate the choices citizens make when asked to express willingness to support a proposed energy policy and are then compelled to allocate the program funds to either renewable energy or energy efficiency. In a survey study based on a random sample of residents of the state of Maine, USA, we find that citizens have preferences for specific types of renewable energy but these preferences do not yield significantly different allocation of investment funds between renewable energy and energy efficiency. We find that preferences are generally consistent regardless of presentation of options (i.e. limited ordering effects). Our …

Landings, Vol. 23, No. 12, Maine Lobstermen’S Community Alliance

Landings: News & Views from Maine's Lobstering Community

Landings content emphasizes science, history, resource sustainability, economic development, and human interest stories related to

Maine’s lobster industry. The newsletter emphasizes lobstering as a traditional, majority-European American lifeway with an economic and social heritage unique to the coast of Maine. The publication focuses how ongoing research to engage in sustainable, non-harmful, and non-wasteful commercial fishing practices benefit both the fishery and Maine's coastal legacy.

Maine Lobstermen’s Community Alliance (MLCA) started publication of Landings, a 24-page newsletter in January 2013 as the successor of the Maine Lobstermen’s Association (MLA) Newsletter. As of 2022, the MLCA published over 6,500 copies of …

Observed Deep Energetic Eddies By Seamount Wake, Gengxin Chen, Dongxiao Wang, Changming Dong, Tingting Zu, Huijie Xue, Yeqiang Shu, Xiaoqing Chu, Yiquan Qi, Hui Chen

Miscellaneous Publications

Despite numerous surface eddies are observed in the ocean, deep eddies (a type of eddies which have no footprints at the sea surface) are much less reported in the literature due to the scarcity of their observation. In this letter, from recently collected current and temperature data by mooring arrays, a deep energetic and baroclinic eddy is detected in the northwestern South China Sea (SCS) with its intensity, size, polarity and structure being characterized. It remarkably deepens isotherm at deep layers by the amplitude of ~120 m and induces a maximal velocity amplitude about 0.18 m/s, which is far larger …

Faculty Forum : Research And Graduate Education – Update, University Of Maine Office Of Academic Affairs

General University of Maine Publications

The University of Maine’s strategic plan outlines goals for Research and Graduate Education. These goals include the enhancement of “our research capacity and output as measured in the core areas of research expenditures and private foundation funding” as well as the advancement of an “integrative model of excellence for graduate education in the 21st century”. Further, UMaine is called to “foster dynamic professional training and development activities through university-wide interdisciplinary research networks.” In March 2014, an Academic Affairs Forum focused on the opportunity to rethink our approach to accomplishing these goals under a proposed reorganization of Research and the Graduate …

Islamophobia Is Not The Answer, Alan Bennett Nov 2015

Islamophobia Is Not The Answer, Alan Bennett

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Members of a major world religion are required to register their affiliation and ordered to wear badges of identification. They are tracked. Their places of worship are put out of commission. They are shamed in public for being who they are, and no one offers them help in even the more dire situations. The year is 2015, and Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, has recently suggested all American Muslims should “absolutely” be required to register their identities in a database, for monitoring purposes because, in his words, “Our country has no management.”

Integrated Analytical-Computational Analysis Of Microstructural Influences On Seismic Anisotropy, Scott E. Johnson, Christopher Gerbi, Andrew J. Goupee, Senthil Vel Nov 2015

Integrated Analytical-Computational Analysis Of Microstructural Influences On Seismic Anisotropy, Scott E. Johnson, Christopher Gerbi, Andrew J. Goupee, Senthil Vel

University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports

The magnitudes, orientations and spatial distributions of elastic anisotropy in Earth's crust and mantle carry valuable information about gradients in thermal, mechanical and kinematic parameters arising from mantle convection, mantle-crust coupling and tectonic plate interactions. Relating seismic signals to deformation regimes requires knowledge of the elastic signatures (bulk stiffnesses) of different microstructures that characterize specific deformation environments, but the influence of microstructural heterogeneity on bulk stiffness has not been comprehensively evaluated. The objectives of this project are to: (1) scale up a preliminary method to determine the bulk stiffness of rocks using integrated analytical (electron backscatter diffraction) and computational (asymptotic …

2014-2015 Annual Report, Office Of The Vice President For Research And Dean Of The Graduate School

General University of Maine Publications

The 2014-15 academic year marked the first year since AY 1998-99 that research and graduate studies were administratively organized into one office. The reorganization brings synergy and focus to these two vital and strongly linked components of the University of Maine’s land grant mission. During FY 2015 a total of $51,134,092 were received from extramural sponsors and were comprised of 370 awards. These results closely mirror FY 2014 with 363 awards and $51,169,551 received. Our average proposal success rate from FY 2005 – FY 2015 was approximately 68%. The FY 2015 proposal success rate was 76%, up from 63% in …

Wintertime Weather-Climate Variability And Its Links To Early Spring Ice-Out In Maine Lakes, Mussie Beyene, Shaleen Jain Nov 2015

Wintertime Weather-Climate Variability And Its Links To Early Spring Ice-Out In Maine Lakes, Mussie Beyene, Shaleen Jain

Publications

In recent decades, Maine lakes have recorded their earliest ice-out dates in over a century. In temperate regions, seasonal lake ice-cover is a critical phenomenon linking climate, aquatic ecosystem and society. And the lengthening of the ice-free period due to warmer climate has been linked to increased algal growth and declining lake water quality, warming of water temperatures leading to alterations in aquatic biodiversity, and the shortening of ice-fishing period and other traditional winter activities over lakes. In this study, historical record of eight lakes and six benchmarked meteorological stations in Maine for the period 1950–2010 were analyzed to (1) …
