Improving The Reliability Of Visual Inspections Conducted By Fire And Rescue Services During Pre-Incident Planning Visits, Victor Hrymak Aug 2022

Improving The Reliability Of Visual Inspections Conducted By Fire And Rescue Services During Pre-Incident Planning Visits, Victor Hrymak

Conference papers

Fire and rescues services the world over commonly conduct pre-incident planning familiarisation visits. During such visits, fire crews typically look for observable fire safety hazards. Accordingly, two research questions were investigated in this study being; how many fire hazards are typically observed during such familiarisation visits and can the reliability of visual inspection conduct be improved by using a novel systematic visual inspection method. A fire and rescue service with 22 fire fighters was recruited, and they conducted 21 pre-incident planning visits to occupied apartments blocks. The experimental design involved one of the fire crew being tasked with observing fire …

A Bim+Blockchain Approach To Ensure Transparency In The Strategic Housing Development Planning System, Carlo Orani, Malachy Mathews Dr Jan 2022

A Bim+Blockchain Approach To Ensure Transparency In The Strategic Housing Development Planning System, Carlo Orani, Malachy Mathews Dr

Conference papers

The introduction of the fast-tracking housing regulations in Ireland has modified the dynamics in which democratic participation is deployed in planning decisions. The resulting planning process has favoured inequality phenomena and has strengthened the position of construction lobbies in large-scale developments. This paper enforces citizen engagement in the Strategic Housing Development (SHD) framework using Building Information Modelling (BIM) and blockchain technologies to build digital trust. Digital tools have enormous potential to deliver more transparent planning by establishing proven accountability for building permissions and promoting trusted interactions between citizens and local administrations. This study first describes all the reasoning underpinning the …

Empowering Qualitative Research Methods In Education With Artificial Intelligence, Luca Longo

Conference papers

Artificial Intelligence is one of the fastest growing disciplines, disrupting many sectors. Originally mainly for computer scientists and engineers, it has been expanding its horizons and empowering many other disciplines contributing to the development of many novel applications in many sectors. These include medicine and health care, business and finance, psychology and neuroscience, physics and biology to mention a few. However, one of the disciplines in which artificial intelligence has not been fully explored and exploited yet is education. In this discipline, many research methods are employed by scholars, lecturers and practitioners to investigate the impact of different instructional approaches …

The Strategy Process Of Irish Quantity Surveying Firms Operating Within A Turbulent Business Environment, Michael Adesi, Roisin Murphy, Dermot Kehily Sep 2019

The Strategy Process Of Irish Quantity Surveying Firms Operating Within A Turbulent Business Environment, Michael Adesi, Roisin Murphy, Dermot Kehily

Conference papers

Rapid technological changes and market fluctuations create a turbulent business environment that poses significant challenges to the strategy process of Quantity Surveying (QS) firms. A turbulent environment refers to the existence of high levels of uncertainty, unpredictability, volatile demand and changing growth conditions within an industry. The strategy process is complex and becomes more problematic in the face of a turbulent business environment. To date, studies focusing on QS practices seldom investigate the impact of a rapidly changing environment on the strategy process within these firms. This study aims to address this gap by investigating the impact of environmental turbulence …

Rethinking Zoning For People: Utilizing The Concept Of The Village, Kevin Leyden, Lorraine D'Arcy Jan 2018

Rethinking Zoning For People: Utilizing The Concept Of The Village, Kevin Leyden, Lorraine D'Arcy

Other

In this chapter, we propose it is time to re-think and re-imagine how we approach zoning. This is especially true for suburban developments. Today, especially in the United States, zoning in suburban areas is being used to segregate and separate the component parts of our communities into distinct zones which are spread out geographically and in most cases require the daily use of an automobile. The negative consequences of this form of development for health, community and the environment are discussed. Using a study of neighborhoods in Dublin, Ireland and its suburbs we examine how professionals and the public view …

Greater Drogheda: Emerging Demographic Evidence Base For Ireland’S Sixth City., Brian Hughes Oct 2015

Greater Drogheda: Emerging Demographic Evidence Base For Ireland’S Sixth City., Brian Hughes

Other Resources

With Ireland’s strong economic recovery and the gradual revival of its construction industry, the future potential status and growth of its provincial cities in general for Drogheda, and the near 80,000 population of the Greater Drogheda Area (GDrA), is viewed as having been portrayed in an underwhelming way in the withdrawn National Spatial Strategy (NSS). Drogheda straddles both Louth and Meath counties, thereby presenting historic governance issues. Its impressive growth since 1996, in becoming Ireland’s largest town, has required several county boundary adjustments. This divided governance has inhibited its commercial growth. The purpose of this Paper is to have GDrA’s …

Using Children's Maps To Locate Areas Of Perceived Danger On Children's Routes To School, Frank Bondzio May 2014

Using Children's Maps To Locate Areas Of Perceived Danger On Children's Routes To School, Frank Bondzio

Masters

Dublin faces many of the modern day transport problems associated with automobile transport. The bicycle is increasingly being viewed by Urban Planners as an interesting form of individual transportation which can form part of an integrated transportation solution to this problem. For cycling to be a sustainable mode of transport it must be all inclusive. However, there are some identifiable barriers which prevent certain groups in society from cycling. Barriers to children cycling are directly linked to safety concerns and strategies to encourage cycling to school in Ireland currently focus on promotion and cycle training with road safety engineering measures …

An Empirical Investigation Of Strategic Planning In Qs Practices, Roisin Murphy Sep 2012

An Empirical Investigation Of Strategic Planning In Qs Practices, Roisin Murphy

Conference papers

The benefit of engaging in strategic planning has been well documented over several decades of strategic management research. Despite the significant body of existing knowledge in the field, there remains a limited collection of empirically tested research pertaining to strategic planning within professional service firms (PSFs) in construction, particularly from an Irish context.

The research is an exploratory study involving in-depth, semi-structured interviews and a widespread survey of Quantity Surveying (QS) practices in Ireland. The aim of the research is to ascertain the extent of strategic planning undertaken within Irish QS practices, and to gain an insight into the characteristics …

Using Children’S Maps To Locate Areas Of Perceived Danger On Children’S Routes To School, Frank Bondzio, Ken Boyle Aug 2012

Using Children’S Maps To Locate Areas Of Perceived Danger On Children’S Routes To School, Frank Bondzio, Ken Boyle

Conference Papers

Municipals and local authorities all over the world are attempting to boost the number of children walking or cycling to school as the benefits for children and society as a whole deriving from an active travel to and from school are widely acknowledged. For this reason programs that encourage active travel to school are often implemented by local authorities or schools. Many of these programs focus on the child. Cycle training or motivation programs aimed at a mode shift towards active travel are relatively easy to set up and can lead to quick results. Yet, a child centred review of …

The Greater Dublin Area: Ireland's Potential City-State Of The Early 21st. Century, Brian Hughes Jan 2010

The Greater Dublin Area: Ireland's Potential City-State Of The Early 21st. Century, Brian Hughes

Doctoral

Dublin’s superior population and employment growth, its scale size and unique urban agglomerative momentum will result in it emerging as Ireland’s ‘city state’ by mid-tolate 21st century. The hypothesis states that by then, the GDA is expected to be approaching half of the State’s population. The pivotal research question addressed is: can the GDA long-term differential population growth to that of the RoS area result in a 50% convergence of their respective populations and if so, when might this occur? The thesis develops the Hughes Years Matrix of Convergence ‘HYMOC’1 mathematical model, which represents this author’s spreadsheet matrix time indicator …

Strategic By Design Iterative Approaches To Educational Planning, Shannon Chance Jan 2010

Strategic By Design Iterative Approaches To Educational Planning, Shannon Chance

Articles

Today’s tumultuous economic and political conditions require universities to adapt—fast. Leaders must attend to unforeseen crises, events, and opportunities in ways that align with their core missions, promote their universities’ continued existence, and help achieve disparate goals (Rowley, Lujan, and Dolence 1997). Good planning and good plans involve iteration; simple cause-and-effect thinking is no longer enough.

The Prospective Process Through Scenario Thinking For The Built And Human Environment: A Tool For Exploring Urban Futures, John Ratcliffe, Lorcan Sirr

Articles

We are currently living through an era where we can, and need to, create exciting new possibilities in the way we think about, plan, design and build new places and spaces for working and living. At the same time, two irresistible forces – change and complexity – face decision-makers charged with framing and executing future policy and practice for the built and human environment. This paper generally argues the case for employing a ‘prospective’ process through scenario thinking for strategic planning and management in the urban arena. It does not attempt to identify or explore the advances made in planning …

Scenario Building: A Suitable Method For Strategic Construction Industry Planning?, John Ratcliffe

Articles

This paper is primarily about the Scenario Method. How scenario building, planning or learning exercises can profitably be used to identify, develop and test alternative plans, policies and practices that might be proposed in exploring and preparing for strategic decision-making in the construction industry. The method has been widely used in business, industry and government for over thirty years as an unrivalled technique to learn about the future before it happens. The paper examines the principles, practice and pitfalls of Scenario Building with the prime aim of presenting the technique as one singularly relevant to the study of the construction …
