Extreme Weather Events (EWEs) impose a substantial health and socio-economic burden on exposed populations. Projected impacts on public health, based on increasing EWE frequencies since the 1950s, alongside evidence of human-mediated climatic change represents a growing concern. To date, the impacts of EWEs on mental health remain ambiguous, largely due to the inherent complexities in linking extreme weather phenomena with psychological status. This exploratory investigation provides a new empirical and global perspective on the psychological toll of EWEs by exclusively focusing on psychological morbidity among individuals exposed to such events. Morbidity data collated from a range of existing psychological and …

Exploring The Concept Of Recovery In Irish Mental Health Services: A Case Study Of Perspectives Within An Inter-Professional Team, Calvin Swords, Stan Houston Feb 2020

Exploring The Concept Of Recovery In Irish Mental Health Services: A Case Study Of Perspectives Within An Inter-Professional Team, Calvin Swords, Stan Houston

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

The concept of recovery has been well documented in the Irish state’s policies on mental health. More widely, the notion has been contested and embroiled in a number of definitional debates. Given the formative nature of this unfolding discourse, this research explored the meaning of recovery from the perspectives of one inter-professional team delivering mental health services to vulnerable individuals within an Irish community setting. The researchers sought to analyse whether the disciplines of medicine, psychology, nursing and social work could work together purposively to promote the biopsychosocial approach to recovery-oriented practice. This vein of inquiry was salient as an …

Urban agglomerations expose citizens to ever-increasing risks from heat, air pollution, noise stress, and reduced nature connectedness. Concurrently, accumulating evidence suggests various health benefits by exposure to urban natural spaces (World Health Organization, 2016a; Bratman et al., 2019). Existing research suggests an array of benefits of contact with nature which are linked to physical activity (e.g., green exercise), active travel, and residential proximity to greenspace. Psychological benefits appear to be related to mood, well-being, attention and pro-environmental behavior; physiological benefits have been described in terms of increased physical activity, improved cardiovascular parameters, reduced stress hormones, and enhanced immune resources (Bowler …

Help-Seeking From A Counsellor Or Psychotherapist: A Cross-Sectional Study Of Irish Adults, Damien Cassells Dec 2019

Help-Seeking From A Counsellor Or Psychotherapist: A Cross-Sectional Study Of Irish Adults, Damien Cassells

Articles

The factors that contribute towards an individual seeking help from a counsellor or psychotherapist for a mental, nervous or emotional problem are explored in this study. A multivariate logistic regression is applied to analyse data from the 2006 National Psychological Wellbeing and Distress Survey. Individuals living in rural areas and in towns with populations of between 5,000 and 10,000 people are found to be less likely to seek counselling, relative to individuals living in Dublin City. Respondents earning the lowest income were less likely to enter therapy compared with respondents earning the highest, while having private health insurance increased the …

This paper considers the environmental impact on well-being and performance in elite athletes during Olympic competition. The benefits of exercising in natural environments are recognized, but less is known about the effects on performance and health in elite athletes. Although some Olympic events take place in natural environments, the majority occur in the host city, usually a large densely populated area where low exposure to natural environments is compounded by exposure to high levels of air, water, and noise pollution in the ambient environment. By combining methods and expertise from diverse but inter-related disciplines including environmental psychology, exercise physiology, biomechanics, …

Placing The Promotion Of Health And Well Being On The Irish Prison Agenda - The Complexity Of Health Promotion In Irish Prisons, Catherine Macnamara, Patricia Mannix-Mcnamara May 2014

Placing The Promotion Of Health And Well Being On The Irish Prison Agenda - The Complexity Of Health Promotion In Irish Prisons, Catherine Macnamara, Patricia Mannix-Mcnamara

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

The prison population experiences significant health inequality and social exclusion (Department of Health 2002). Once incarcerated, prisoners are at increased risk of mental illness and have higher exposure to communicable diseases (WHO 2008). Prisoners generally have poorer health because imprisonment negatively impacts upon the health of the individual (WHO 2008). However, the prison setting offers a unique opportunity to implement targeted health promotion initiatives with a population that may have had very limited experience of accessing health services prior to incarceration. The World Health Organisation recognises the need for health promotion in prisons. This is evidenced in the Health in …

Improving Mental Health Assessments For Looked After Children, Michael Murray

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

As part of the UK's National Health Service modernisation agenda, the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety, Northern Ireland set up a Service Improvement Unit (SIU). The aim of the SIU was to identify key areas in the Health and Social Services that needed improvement and to provide a structured framework in which to achieve the necessary developments. A key area identified was the interface between children in care and the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. It was believed that a lot of work needed to be undertaken to identify those children and young people in the …

Mental Health Care Policies And Services In Switzerland, Stefan Kunz Jan 2000

Mental Health Care Policies And Services In Switzerland, Stefan Kunz

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This article summarises the recent development of Swiss mental health policies and services. The last three decades have been characterised by a strong emphasis on the socio psychiatric approach Bachmann, 1995; Ciompi, 1997, 1994,1987a, 1987b). The establishment of a decentralised, patient and community focused mental health care network, integrating different therapeutic methods under a uniform administration is the base concept of the emerging movement (Ernst, 1998;Bachmann, 1995,Ciompi, 1994, 1987b). Achievements and problems of mental health care provision are outlined. A more proactive role for mental health care professionals in policy is proposed to contribute to the solution of present injustices. …

Mental Health, Adolescents And Children: A Comparative Analysis Of The Practice/Policy Interface, John S. G. Wells Jan 1999

Mental Health, Adolescents And Children: A Comparative Analysis Of The Practice/Policy Interface, John S. G. Wells

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

Mental health services for children and adolescents in Ireland exist in a state of ambiguity. Services operate within a context of resource constraints and increasing demand. The result is that practitioners have to prioritise the client groups according to policy dictates. In Ireland the policy priority is children at risk of physical and sexual abuse. Utilising current literature in the field, this paper discusses the potential consequences of such a focus for clients, practitioners and policy through a comparative analysis with the United Kingdom. It is argued that a lack of legislative clarity, combined with a focus on abuse has …
