Tracking of pedestrian behaviour, particularly route selection and temporal behaviours, can be difficult to undertake. This is especially true of studies at a community or campus level where the anonymity of pedestrians can be difficult to protect. The introduction of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulations 2016 (GDPR) has increased the complexity of this challenge. Advances in Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology in recent years have increased the potential to monitor human behaviour by tracking and triangulating pedestrians. This paper describes an experiment undertaken along The Great South Wall at the Port of Dublin, which is considered a leading amenity …

Information technology is increasingly becoming an integral part of contemporary life. Most tasks that are performed over the course of a day, involve the use of different types of connected devices. About two billion contemporary consumers use smartphones [1]. These smartphones contain a variety of sensors that can collect information about their users such as their mobility patterns, daily activities and occupancy patterns [2]. Occupancy is an important aspect in developing responsive environments and for optimizing building performance. This work investigates the extent to which smartphones can be used to collect occupancy data in a work …

There are several problems encountered when trying to determine the location of a mobile phone, including weather you are in an urban or rural environment. Also, it is well known that different positioning technologies can work better than others depending on the environment they are in. For example, GPS works well in rural areas but not as well in urban areas, GSM positioning accuracy can be acceptable in urban areas with the right triangulation technology, but is less accurate in rural areas. Positioning with other technologies such as WiFi, Bluetooth, and Semacode all have their own advantages and disadvantages also, …
