All The World's A Page: Towards A Definition Of 'Writer' In An Age Of Opportunity, Sue Norton
All The World's A Page: Towards A Definition Of 'Writer' In An Age Of Opportunity, Sue Norton
Articles
This article considers the status of the writer at a time when publication is no longer elusive, given the immediacy of online dissemination. For those who identify as writers, it looks at the implications of blogging, social media, entrepreneurial self-publishing, and scholarly open access journals, including so-called ‘predatory’ ones. It argues for a distinction between day-to-day writing and composition, and seeks to establish a category for the writer that takes account of deliberation, craft, and readership. It juxtaposes the creative activity of Jack Kerouac, Virginia Woolf, Truman Capote, and Mother Goose against the linguist John McWhorter’s convincing dismissal of the …

Dispute Resolution Under The Principal Irish Forms Of Building Contract, Tony Cunningham
Dispute Resolution Under The Principal Irish Forms Of Building Contract, Tony Cunningham
Other Resources
The construction industry is known to be litigious (Latham, 1994). This is hardly surprising given the industry’s fragmented nature in which project teams comprising an extensive network of employers, designers and constructors are brought together to deliver once-off projects, following which, the organisation is almost always disbanded. The short term objectives of the various groupings are often competing and occasionally incompatible. For example, many employers will wish to minimise costs in developing a project, designers may resist pressures on budgets in order to safeguard their ‘brand’, and the commercial imperative of maximising profit will drive contractors towards charging what the …
Risk Allocation Under The Principal ‘Traditional’ Irish Forms Of Building Contract, Tony Cunningham
Risk Allocation Under The Principal ‘Traditional’ Irish Forms Of Building Contract, Tony Cunningham
Other Resources
Construction projects are risky ventures. Risks are inevitable and cannot be entirely eliminated but they can be transferred through appropriate wording in the clauses of a contract. Construction contracts allocate particular risks between the parties in order to identify who bears the cost if a particular risk comes to pass.
This study examines how contractual risks are allocated to the contracting parties under the Royal Institute of Architects in Ireland Form, 2012 version, where quantities form part of the contract, commonly known as ‘the Yellow Form’, and the Public Works Contract PW CF1 Form v 1.10, 2014 where the design …

Cost Control During The Pre-Contract Stage Of A Building Project – An Introduction, Tony Cunningham
Cost Control During The Pre-Contract Stage Of A Building Project – An Introduction, Tony Cunningham
Other Resources
Cost overruns are commonplace on construction projects.
One of the most important tasks carried out by quantity surveyors (QS) involves providing advice to clients and design team colleagues to enable the design to be finalised within the approved budget. This financial management process is referred to as cost control. Cost control seeks to deliver a high degree of cost certainty during the various stages of the building project in order that the project can be completed within budget. Successful projects are those which are delivered to the required quality standards, on time, and within budget. Effective cost management therefore is …

Digital Energy Networks: A Post Occupancy Evaluation And Appraisal Of An Intelligent Low Energy Lighting System, Anthony Colohan, Joseph Teehan, Keith Sunderland, Martin Barrett, James Preston
Conference Papers
The reduction in the electrical power requirements of LED lighting and the coinciding advancements in digital technology have now enabled luminaires to be powered and controlled exclusively over safety extra low voltage (SELV) wiring systems. The implementation of LED luminaires powered via a centralised 48 Volt DC low-latency communication network, with the capability to gather real-time data, has provided the potential to yield considerable electrical energy savings within a building. This paper will present an appraisal of this technology and will examine the technologies potential to make electrical energy savings, improve the quality of lighting and achieve cost savings on …
The Challenges Of Leading Change In Health-Care Delivery From The Frontline, Vivienne Byers
The Challenges Of Leading Change In Health-Care Delivery From The Frontline, Vivienne Byers
Articles
Aim: The public sector is facing turbulent times and this challenges nurses, who are expected to serve both patient interests and the efficiency drives of their organisations. In the context of implementing person-centred health policy, this paper explores the evolving role of front-line nurses as leaders and champions of change.
Background: Nurses can be seen to have some autonomy in health-care delivery. However, they are subject to systems of social control. In implementing person- centred policy, nurses can be seen to be doing the best they can within a constrained environment.
Method: A survey of nursing practice in person-centred health-policy …

A Review Of Solar And Visible Light Active Tio2 Photocatalysis For Treating Bacteria, Cyanotoxins And Contaminants Of Emerging Concern, Rachel Fagan, Declan Mccormack, Suresh Pillai, Dionysios Dionysiou
Articles
Research into the development of solar and visible light active photocatalysts has been significantly increased in recent years due to its wide range of applications in treating contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs), bacteria and cyanotoxins. Solar photocatalysis is found to be highly effective in treating a wide range of CECs from sources such as pharmaceuticals, steroids, antibiotics, phthalates, disinfectants, pesticides, fragrances (musk), preservatives and additives. Similarly, a number of EDCs including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), alkylphenols (APs), bisphenol A (BPA), organotins (OTs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), natural and synthetic estrogenic and androgenic chemicals, pesticides, and heavy …

The Higher Education Authority recently reported an average drop-out rate of 16% for Irish third level students, which poses significant pedagogical and economic challenges across the educational sector and negatively impacts the Irish economy. With respect to tackling this issue, a considerable body of international research has identified a strong positive correlation between higher levels of emotional intelligence (EI) and increased levels of student engagement and academic attainment. A wealth of previous research has also shown that employers favour graduates who possess higher levels of EI, for example, Job Outlook Survey, 2008, therefore, increasing students’ levels of EI is also …

The Minimum And Other Free Energies For Non-Linear Materials With Memory., John Murrough Golden
The Minimum And Other Free Energies For Non-Linear Materials With Memory., John Murrough Golden
Articles
Expressions are obtained for free energies of materials with a certain type of non-linear constitutive relation. In particular, the minimum and related free energies are considered in some detail. Minimal states are defined for these materials, and it is shown that any free energy yielding a linear constitutive equation that is a functional of the minimal state has a counterpart in the non-linear case which is also a minimal state functional in this more general context. These results are explored for simple examples, including discrete spectrum materials.
1916 Easter Rising And The Reconceptualization Of Memory, Siobhan Doyle
1916 Easter Rising And The Reconceptualization Of Memory, Siobhan Doyle
Academic Articles
Like many countries, Ireland has a chaotic and tumultuous past which results in challenges for the state in presenting history to satisfy the education and expectation of both national and international audiences. The years between 1912 and 1922 were arguably the most transformative in modern Irish history as it was a decade of war, revolution and rapid social change. The 1916 Easter Rising- a failed rebellion against British rule- is synonymous as a moment in the past which represents Irish history, characterizes Irish culture and amplifies national identity. My paper will explore how the centenary commemorations of this historic event …

An Entrepreneurial Context For The Theory Of The Firm: Exploring Assumptions And Consequences, Arturo E. Osorio, Paul Donnelly, Banu Ozkazanc-Pan
An Entrepreneurial Context For The Theory Of The Firm: Exploring Assumptions And Consequences, Arturo E. Osorio, Paul Donnelly, Banu Ozkazanc-Pan
Articles
While entrepreneurship may be driven by personal interests and lifestyle choices, entrepreneurial actions are not only economically driven opportunity-searching processes but also enactments of social transformation that may or may not lead to socioeconomic benefits. We advance that exploring these entrepreneurial processes can inform a theory of the firm that may explain how socioeconomic processes shape the socioeconomic environment of communities while serving individuals. This article discusses several understandings of the firm, as theorized in extant literature. Guided by these different conceptualizations, we present a case study of an artist and artisan cluster in Western Massachusetts to demonstrate various understandings …

Half of all sovereign states in the world have a population of less than 6.2m (World Bank, 2014). The mainstream literature in most academic disciplines has chosen, by accident or design, to neglect the unique determinants of small state growth and development (Armstrong & Read, 2003; Read, 2014). These are extraordinary omissions when the collective evidence on the performance of smaller states on a wide range of economic, political, cultural and social indices is considered. Apart from the disproportionate representation that small states enjoy in the World Banks Upper-Middle and High Income categories, many small states also feature in the …
An Introduction To Defining Cost Estimates For Mechanical And Electrical Services Using The Nrm1, Charles Mitchell
An Introduction To Defining Cost Estimates For Mechanical And Electrical Services Using The Nrm1, Charles Mitchell
Reports
Determining an accurate value for the supply and installation of mechanical and electrical services is a difficult task due to the level of specialisation and variance within this sector of the industry. The level of specialised knowledge and the ever changing technology has prevented the Quantity Surveyor from taking a firm hold on the cost estimation of these services. Cost estimates have previously been prepared by consultant services engineers or based on costs provided by these consultants.
However, employers nowadays require more cost certainty in the estimates of costs. As a direct result the New Rules of Measurement 1 (NRM1) …

Load-Adjusted Video Quality Prediction Methods For Missing Data, Ruairí De Fréin
Load-Adjusted Video Quality Prediction Methods For Missing Data, Ruairí De Fréin
Conference papers
A polynomial fitting model for predicting the RTP packet rate of Video-on-Demand received by a client is presented. The approach is underpinned by a parametric statistical model for the client-server system, namely the PQ-model. It improves the robustness of the predictor in the presence of a time-varying load on the server. The advantage of our approach is that (1) if we model the load on the server, we can then use this model to improve RTP packet rate predictions; (2) we can predict how the server will behave under previously unobserved loads –a tool which is particularly useful for network …
Detection And Epidemiology Of Plasmid-Mediated Ampc B-Lactamase Producing Escherichia Coli In Two Irish Tertiary Care Hospitals, Celine Herra
Articles
This study determined the prevalence and distribution of plasmid-mediated AmpC (pAmpC) b-lactamases in Irish Escherichia coli isolates. Clinical E. coli isolates (n = 95) that were intermediate or resistant to cefoxitin and/or flagged by VITEK 2 as potential AmpC-producers underwent confirmation using a MASTDISCST ESBL and AmpC Detection Kit. Multiplex PCR capable of detecting family-specific plasmid ampC genes was performed to detect the presence of these genes. Five PCR- negative isolates were selected for promoter analysis. PFGE and MLST were performed on E. coli isolates that harboured a plasmid ampC gene to determine their clonal relatedness. Plasmid ampC genes were …
Synthesising Folk Influences And Contemporary Compositional Techniques In Pursuit Of An Original Musical Language, Alyson Barber
Synthesising Folk Influences And Contemporary Compositional Techniques In Pursuit Of An Original Musical Language, Alyson Barber
Doctoral
As both a traditional Irish musician and composer, I am always striving to effectively fuse folk music and contemporary compositional techniques together. From a young age, I was immersed in all aspects of Irish folk culture from music to folklore and these early influences have become a fundamental source of inspiration for my works. This research project examines how the syntheses of ethnic music with contemporary techniques, have informed my composition portfolio and culminated in the development of my individual approach, where timbre and folk idioms combine to form a distinctive stylistic genre.
Many composers have delved into this area …
The Regulation Of Hpv Late Gene Expression And The Potential Role Of Inkt Cells In Cervical Cancer, Patrice Nolan
The Regulation Of Hpv Late Gene Expression And The Potential Role Of Inkt Cells In Cervical Cancer, Patrice Nolan
Masters
Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are ubiquitous, sexually transmitted viruses present in 99.7% of all cervical cancers, the second most common cancer in females worldwide. Expression of HPV L1 and L2 late genes is found only in terminally differentiated epithelial cells. As L1 and L2 proteins are highly immunogenic, it is suggested that their suppression may prevent detection of the virus by the immune system, thus acting as a prerequisite for persistence of infection. Therefore, if expression of these proteins in the lower cervical layers was induced, it could lead to clearance of the virus. One aim of this thesis was to …
Harnessing The Power Of Data Can Help Solve Our Housing Needs, Lorcan Sirr
Harnessing The Power Of Data Can Help Solve Our Housing Needs, Lorcan Sirr

Ireland has traditionally been poor at collecting data, collating statistics and disseminating information. It’s not that we are an innumerate country; I think it is more that facts often inconveniently jar with opinion on a range of topics, from rural Ireland to road safety, to housing.
We Can’T Expect ‘The Market’ To Provide A Housing Policy, Lorcan Sirr
We Can’T Expect ‘The Market’ To Provide A Housing Policy, Lorcan Sirr
Media
As the government grapples with establishing a worthwhile housing policy, it would do well to remember that affordability is key. As companies increasingly choose to locate in or near cities, and people followjobs, most of Ireland’s housing needs will be in the greater Dublin area. In 2015, about half the population lives on just 20% of Ireland’s surface area, but by 2030 nearly half the nation will be living on just 10% of the land. Figures vary but the Dublin area will need 8,000-10,000 housing units per year.
Towards Entrepreneurial Learning Outcomes In Business Education And Beyond – Next Practice? Design & Guidance, Anthony Paul Buckley
Towards Entrepreneurial Learning Outcomes In Business Education And Beyond – Next Practice? Design & Guidance, Anthony Paul Buckley

High growth economies can be differentiated from low growth economies by their high investment in knowledge, low knowledge filter and high levels of entrepreneurial capital. These states help create entrepreneurial capital by providing their citizens with opportunities to learn to be more enterprising in their pursuit of value creation and capture. What should be taught, how and what are the appropriate learning outcomes of entrepreneurship education and training (EET) then become the relevant questions. This paper reviews the relevant EET literature, assesses current thinking and practice and concludes, in the absence of empirical evidence in favour of a particular pedagogical …

Raman Spectroscopic Analysis Of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma And Oral Dysplasia In The High-Wavenumber Region, Hugh Byrne, Luis Felipe Carvalho, Fiona Lyng, Franck Bonnier
Articles
Raman spectroscopy can provide a molecular-level signature of the biochemical composition and structure of cells with excellent spatial resolution and could be useful to monitor changes in composition for early stage and non-invasive cancer diagnosis, both ex-vivo and in vivo. In particular, the fingerprint spectral region (400–1,800 cm-1) has been shown to be very promising for optical biopsy purposes. However, limitations to discrimination of dysplastic and inflammatory processes based on the fingerprint region still persist. In addition, the Raman spectral signal of dysplastic cells is one important source of misdiagnosis of normal versus pathological tissues. The high wavenumber …
Hvdc Systems Fault Analysis Using Various Signal Processing Techniques, Benish Paily
Hvdc Systems Fault Analysis Using Various Signal Processing Techniques, Benish Paily
Doctoral
The detection and fast clearance of faults are important for the safe and optimal operation of HVDC systems. In HVDC systems, various types of AC faults (rectifier & inverter side) and DC faults can occur. It is therefore necessary to detect the faults and classify them for better protection and diagnostics purposes. Various techniques for fault detection and classification in HVDC systems using signal processing techniques are presented and investigated in this research work. In this research work, it is shown that the wavelet transformation can effectively detect abrupt changes in system signals which are indicative of a fault. This …
