The Development Of A Computer Program To Co-Ordinate Early Design Stage Information, Bernard Denver
The Development Of A Computer Program To Co-Ordinate Early Design Stage Information, Bernard Denver
Masters
local and global environment is becoming increasingly important. Several methods and procedures have been adopted to encourage designers and engineers to become more environmentally friendly and energy conscious. The advance of computer simulation and modelling of buildings has been successful in addressing potential problems in the design process while providing additional information otherwise not available to the design team. However, it is the purpose of this thesis to use this information and benefits of simulation and modelling at an earlier stage in the design. This thesis endeavours to investigate the requirements and benefits and integrated Early Design Stage program would …

The Effect Of Low Temperature Blanching On The Texture Of Whole Processed New Potatoes, Helen Crowley
The Effect Of Low Temperature Blanching On The Texture Of Whole Processed New Potatoes, Helen Crowley
Masters
This study was undertaken to investigate 1) the effect of low temperature blanching on the firmness of processed whole new potatoes and 2) to determine the extent to which the activity of pectin methyl esterase (PME), a naturally occurring enzyme in fruits and vegetable (proposed to play a role in firming using low blanching temperatures), contributes to improved firmness in processed pre-blanched potatoes. Whole new potatoes (var. Maris peer from Portugal and Nicola from England) were blanched at temperatures of 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 90 and 100°C for times of 5 up to 60 minutes to investigate texture changes …

Deploying Integrated Web-Based Spatial Applications Within An Oracle Database Environment, James Carswell
Conference papers
In this paper, we describe the architectural and functional characteristics of e-Spatial™ technology, comprising an innovative software package that represents a timely alternative to traditional and complex proprietary GIS application packages. The two main components of the package, developed by e- Spatial Solutions, are the iSMART™ database development technology and the i-Spatial™ Information Server (iSIS), both implemented within an Oracle 9i Spatial database environment. This technology allows users to build and deploy spatially enabled or standard Internet applications without requiring any application-specific source code. It can be deployed on any Oracle supported hardware platform and on any device that supports …
Sherkin Island Art Degree Project, John O'Connor
Sherkin Island Art Degree Project, John O'Connor
Academic Articles
In 1998 Technological University Dublin formed a partnership with the Sherkin Island Development Society to deliver a pilot programme in Art and Culture on an offshore island in the Atlantic. Developed around the needs of the local community the programme utilised a combination of live and remote teaching methods built around a series of intense workshops. The paper traces the genesis of the project and addresses three main questions: what it cost; what resources were required; and how it might be sustained. The pilot ran from October 2000 to May 2001and was so successful that a second offering has commenced …

Development Of Microbial Inocula For Silage Fermentations, Plunkett Clarke
Development Of Microbial Inocula For Silage Fermentations, Plunkett Clarke
Masters
Silage is the product formed by the fermentation process that occurs when grass is stored anaerobically. Microbial silage inoculants are often added to grass at ensiling in order to improve the silage fermentation. Inoculants normally contain strains of homofermentative lactic acid bacteria. In order to be effective 10 6 viable microorganisms must be added per gram grass ensiled. Literature reports have shown that there are a number of shortcomings associated with inoculants most notably a lack of viability and long lag phases. Therefore, the objective of the research was to improve the quality of silage inoculants. It was hoped to …
John Wilkes And The Enlightenment, Stephen Carruthers
John Wilkes And The Enlightenment, Stephen Carruthers
Masters
Based on the absence of a substantial political philosophy and a scandalous reputation, modern assessments of John Wilkes have tended to marginalise his role in the development of radical political ideas in England in the 1760s and 1770s. This evaluation is reassessed in the context of an analysis of Wilkes’s collaboration with Charles Churchill on the North Briton and his political writings of the period, in particular his Introduction to the History of England (1768). Furthermore, Wilkes enjoyed extensive and prolonged contact with the leading continental philosophers of the period, and in particular d’Holbach, Diderot, Suard, Helvétius, and Chastellux, which …

Visitscotland.Com:Volumes And Values Study, Andrew Frew, Patrick Horan, Peter Mccarthy
Visitscotland.Com:Volumes And Values Study, Andrew Frew, Patrick Horan, Peter Mccarthy
Reports / Surveys
VisitScotland commissioned the work described in this research report in early Spring 2001 and the central aim was a desire to explore the impact of visitscotland.com on accommodation booking volumes and values. The detailed methodology is described in the main body of the report and was based upon two inter-connected tiers. The first tier of research was an extensive survey of accommodation provision undertaken by a variety of routes; postal, fax, email, telephone and web survey techniques. This work provided the basis for the calculation of the indirect conversion ratio once the corresponding server log file activity was analysed.

Evaporative Cooling Availability In Water Based Sensible Cooling Systems, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn
Evaporative Cooling Availability In Water Based Sensible Cooling Systems, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn
Conference Papers
Recent developments have prompted a review of evaporative cooling technology as an effective means of cooling modern deep plan buildings. Prominent among these developments is the success of high temperature sensible cooling systems, such as chilled ceilings, which require a supply of cooling water at 14 to 18°C. Crucial to the success of evaporative cooling technology, as a significant means of cooling in modern applications, is the ability to generate cooling water, in an indirect circuit, at a temperature which closely approaches the ambient adiabatic saturation temperature or wet bulb temperature. Recent research in this area has shown that it …
Experimental Investigation Of Moisture Migration In Concrete, R. P. West, Niall Holmes
Experimental Investigation Of Moisture Migration In Concrete, R. P. West, Niall Holmes
Conference papers
The ability to be able to predict the state of dryness of a concrete floor slab is a practical need in the construction industry. Current popular methods, including the surface hygrometer and vapour emission tests, only indicate surface dryness, with consequent uncertainties in the quantity of residual moisture deep within the slab. This paper describes the variation in moisture condition with depth for a number of slabs under different drying conditions, as established using a new probe which can reliably determine the relative humidity at any depth. From this it is concluded that results from the conventional tests need to …
Slab Drawing Layout: A Study To Develop A New Information Technology Package To Aid Those Involved In The The Manufacture Of Pre-Stresed Hollow Core Plank Flooring, Joe Parker
Masters
Manufacture of pre-stressed hollow core flooring (from here on referred to as (‘slabs’) can be traced through a number of steps. These steps can generally be arranged in the following order; 1. Receipt of a drawing indicating the area that the client requires to be floored. 2. Production of a new drawing showing the layout of individual slabs over the proposed floor area. 3. Production of design calculations to B.S. 8110 (or other design specification) that adequately covers each slab within the floor layout drawing according to its individual design criteria. 4. Production of sheets for manufacture of slabs showing …

Progressive Transmission Of Spatial Data Over The Www: Challenges, James Carswell
Progressive Transmission Of Spatial Data Over The Www: Challenges, James Carswell
Conference papers
Progressive transmission of raster images over the WWW has been successfully applied to provide users with coarser versions of the data before downloading a complete image. In the vector domain, progressive transmission remains a challenging topic. Increasing the level of detail of a vector dataset is a complex process that does not simply imply adding pixels to it. In this paper we present a survey of existing models for progressive transmission of spatial data and discuss open problems and challenges related to the progressive transmission of geographic maps in vector format. Finally, we propose a model based on a client-server …
Development And Construction Of A White Light Profiler For Industrial Applications, Martin Somers
Development And Construction Of A White Light Profiler For Industrial Applications, Martin Somers
Masters
With the ever decreasing tolerances in modern manufacturing processes it has become more important to define surface topography measurements quickly and accurately. Though contact methods, using the stylus probe, have been used for a long time more optical techniques are being brought into the market place. The advantages in using optical methods is obvious; no contact with the surface eliminates damage due to a probing tip and also the surface may be scanned in a matter of seconds. Optical techniques also have the advantage that a full field of view may be acquired, unlike point measurement where the surface must …
Aspects Of Minimality In Abelian Groups, Seosamh Ó Hógáin
Aspects Of Minimality In Abelian Groups, Seosamh Ó Hógáin
Doctoral
This thesis investigates those abelian groups which are minimal with respect to certain quasi-orders defined on Abk, the category of abelian groups of a given infinite cardinality k. Six such quasi-orders are defined and groups which are minimal with respect to these quasi-orders are called either quasi-minimal, with the associated concepts of purely and directly quasi-minimal groups, or simple minimal with the corresponding associated groups. A complete characterisation is derived for the quasi-minimal groups and, assuming GCH, for the purely quasi-minimal groups. Moreover, it is shown that the direct quasi-minimality of a group may be undecidable in ZFC. In the …

Job Shop Scheduling Problem: An Overview, Amr Arisha, Paul Young, Mohie El Baradie
Job Shop Scheduling Problem: An Overview, Amr Arisha, Paul Young, Mohie El Baradie
Conference papers
The Job-shop scheduling is one of the most important industrial activities, especially in manufacturing planning. The problem complexity has increased along with the increase in the complexity of operations and product-mix. To solve this problem, numerous approaches have been developed incorporating discrete event simulation methodology. The scope and the purpose of this paper is to present a survey which covers most of the solving techniques of Job Shop Scheduling (JSS) problem. A classification of these techniques has been proposed: Traditional Techniques and Advanced Techniques. The traditional techniques to solve JSS could not fully satisfy the global competition and rapidly changing …
