Growth Performance And Feed Conversion Efficiency Of Siberian Sturgeon Juveniles (Acipenser Baeri) Reared In Concrete Raceways, Gülten Köksal, Feri̇t Rad, Mevlüt Kindir

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Culture of sturgeon species is of great economical and ecological importance for those countries whose natural stocks of Acipenseridae spp. have declined or been exterminated. Siberian sturgeon ( Acipenser baeri) is considered one of the most suitable sturgeon species for aquaculture. This study was carried out in order to introduce the Siberian sturgeon to Turkey as a potential candidate for aquaculture and to investigate the growth and feed conversion performance of this species in concrete raceways (flow- through system) used in rainbow trout farming. A growth trial was conducted using 1300, 75 days old Siberian sturgeon juveniles imported from France. …

Effects of immersion chilling on the microbiological quality of poultry carcasses and cross contamination of Salmonella were studied. Levels of aerobic mezophilic bacteria, coliform, Escherichia coli and the incidence of Salmonella were determined prechill and postchill. The level of coliform and E. coli were reduced by immersion chilling (P0.05) but there was an increase in Salmonella incidence in carcasses exiting the immersion chiller indicating that this may be the point of most significant cross contamination in broiler processing plants. Experiments on microbial decontamination of poultry carcasses with lactic acid were performed. The microbial levels of poultry carcasses were reduced significantly …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Frozen-thawed fish and fillets are being marketed as fresh fish fillets. One of the methods which helps us to differentiate unfrozen from frozen-thawed fish fillet is the enzymatic method. By means of the freezing and thawing process lysosomal enzymes are released. Lysosomal enzyme activities have the enzymes which decompose protein, carbohydrate, fat and nucleic acids. In this research, fresh, stored in ice, frozen and smoked salmon fish (Onchorhyncus ketaand Salmo salar) have been used. In press juice and in extracts of these fish a muscle lysosomal enzyme \alpha-Glucosidase (E.C. 3.2.1.20) in activitation quantities was detected. The lysosomal enzyme activities of …

Exposure of broiler chickens to 39±1 °C for 2 h at 44 d of age caused an increase in rectal temperatures, and in heterophil and basophil ratios. The H/L ratio also increased from 0.25 to 0.43. The exposure of the broilers to acute heat stress resulted in decreased monocyte and lymphocyte proportions whereas the proportion of eosinophil and the hematocrit values were not affected. It was concluded that a temperature high enough to …

From a telephone conversation with the owner it was determined that there was no problem in standing up and trotting in the …

Development Of An Enzyme Immunoassay For The Determination Of Ovine Growth Hormone In Plasma, Behi̇ç Serpek, Seyfullah Hali̇loğlu Jan 2000

Development Of An Enzyme Immunoassay For The Determination Of Ovine Growth Hormone In Plasma, Behi̇ç Serpek, Seyfullah Hali̇loğlu

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

A competitive enzyme immunoassay for the determination of ovine growth hormone (oGH) was developed. The assay is based on (anti-rabbit IgG) goat IgG-coated microtitreplates, anti-oGH from rabbits, biotinyl-oGH and streptavidin-horseradish peroxidase. The assay is done directly with 40 ml of plasma and the calibration graph (90% relative binding at 0.38 ± 0.02 ng ml -1 and 50% relative binding at 3.80 ± 0.18 ng ml -1 ) is prepared in plasma without measurable endogenous oGH. Recovery in different plasma samples with added oGH amounted to 96.78 - 100.03 %, and all variabilities were < 10.44. The assay shows no significant binding of oFSH, oLH, oTSH and oPRL. The assay detects high and low plasma oGH levels within the physiological variation as well as changes in plasma oGH after stimulation with growth hormone releasing factor. Hence, it offers a reliable alternative radioimmunoassay. However, a reference method providing evidence of the identity of exogenous oGH will be required for proving illegal treatment with oGH and for forensic purposes.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

One hundred pneumonic lungs from calves were examined by an immunoper oxidase technique using avidin-biotin- per oxidase complex method in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections for Haemophilus somnus. In the histological examination of tissue sections, strong positive reactions against H. somnus were detected in 14% of the lungs. H. somnus antigens were observed at the surface and/or within the epithelial cells, macrophages, necrotic alveolar walls, alveolar -bronchial/br onchiolar exudates, fibrins, distended interlobular septa and perivascular areas. In addition, dense antigen accumulations were detected in the necrotic macrophages and neutrophils.
