Calculated Electrocapillary Curve For A Molten Salt, Jerry Goodisman, S Amokrane
Calculated Electrocapillary Curve For A Molten Salt, Jerry Goodisman, S Amokrane
Chemistry - All Scholarship
If bulk properties of simple molten salts may be reasonably well understood in terms of the primitive model, the situation with respect to surface properties is less satisfactory. It has been shown that a simple model for the distributions at the free surface of a molten salt can give surface tension and surface energy in reasonable accord with experiment, provided that a factor guaranteeing local electroneutrality is introduced. In this model, properties are given in terms of bulk-salt distribution functions, for which the primitive model is used. The present work extends this model to the electrocapillary curve, i.e., variation of …

"The intent of this thesis is to investigate the urban block and its role as one of the constituent elements in the building of the city. "

Architecture Thesis Prep
"Based on (the) analysis, I intend to design a new library building on the Hartford site acquired by the University of Connecticut. My plans incluse a structure which will consider the scale, color, and texture of the surrounding buildings. Furthermore, this structure will have ample storage for present and future law school collections, library administrative office and student and faculty facilities. In addition, I will also take into account the fact that much of the research and location of materials in the library is conducted by a computer."

Thesis Proposal For An Austrian Embassy On The Via Gulia In Rome, Martin Dermady
Architecture Senior Theses
"The basic premise underlying this thesis is my conviction that we have lost sight of the traditional relationship of architecture and the city. The cause of this loss is obvious when we compare cities of the past with those of the present. Urban spaces have become more and more abstract and less articulate. The prevalence of the parts over the whole has reulted in the weakening of the urban spatial structure."

Ask For Information Retrieval: Part Ii. Results Of A Design Study, Robert N. Oddy, N J. Belkin, H M. Brooks
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
In 'ASK for Information Retrieval: Part P1, we discussed the theory and background to a design study for an information retrieval (IR) system based on the attempt to represent the anomalous states of knowledge (ASKs) underlying information needs. In Part 11, we report the methods and results of the design study, and our conclusions.

Ask For Information Retrieval: Part I. Background And Theory, Robert N. Oddy, N J. Belkin, H M. Brooks
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
We report the results of a British Library Research and Development Department funded design study for an interactive information retrieval system which will determine structural representations of the anomalous states of knowledge (ASKs) underlying information needs, and attempt to resolve the anomalies through a variety of retrieval strategies performed on a database of documents represented in compatible structural formats. Part I discusses the background to the project and the theory underlying it, Part II (next issue) presents our methods, results and conclusions. Basic premises of the project were: that information needs are not in principle precisely specifiable; that it is …

The Cytoskeletal System Of Nucleated Erythrocytes. I. Composition And Function Of Major Elements, William D. Cohen, Diana Bartelt, Richard Jaeger, George M. Langford, Iris Nemhauser
Biology - All Scholarship
We have studied the dogfish erythrocyte cytoskeletal system, which consists of a marginal band of microtubules (MB) and trans-marginal band material (TBM). The TBM appeared in whole mounts as a rough irregular network and in thin sections as a surface-delimiting layer completely enclosing nucleus and MB. In cells incubated at 0 degrees C for 30 min or more, the MB disappeared but the TBM remained. MB reassembly occurred with rewarming, and was inhibited by colchicine. Flattened elliptical erythrocyte morphology was retained even when MBs were absent. Total solubilization of MB and TBM at low pH, or dissolution of whole anucleate …

The modern dichotomy between the languages of word and number has obscured one basic feature of early European literature-the deliberate use of number-based designs. We are discovering such designs where we least expect them.
