This qualitative study investigates the process of identity negotiation and formation of 10 Brazilian English language learners (ELLs). Participants were asked to share their experiences in formal as well as informal English language learning environments, and to discuss how these experiences potentially impacted their ability to create an imagined identity and join an imagined community of the target language. Data was generated through comprehensive semi-structured interviews with ten ELLs who have either attended university or professional-level English classes in Brazil and/or in an English-speaking country, but have also spent extensive time (at least 1 month) in an English-speaking country. Abstract

The EAP (English for Academic Purposes) program is a contingent of courses intended to orient international students to academic endeavors in the United States, and to bring their English skill to a level at which they can successfully complete university-level work. Students generally complete Listening and Speaking, Reading and Writing, Cultural Orientation, and Administrative Orientation courses. The former two work specifically on language skill, and the latter two focus on cultural and practical matters as well.

This study explores how Latinxs understand their racial identity and how colorism emerges, develops and evolves in the lives of Latinxs. We want to look into how racial identity affects race and color perceptions and relationships in the community. Data in this study came from 10 individuals who participated through in-person interviews or submitted a paper survey between March 2018 and March 2019. The patterns that emerged in this research demonstrate a challenge and confusion to Latinx racial identity. Familial influence is a way that colorism and racial identity is formed and understood. Many older women feel a deep connection to their possessions and these possessions relate to their sense of self and their identity. In order to best capture and honor the stories told by older women about their possessions, mindful listening and media was employed in this case study. These valuable tools enabled the researcher to be present with the participants, deepening their level communication. Mindful listening was beneficial for interviewing others as it allowed listeners to truly hear someone else’s story by increasing their self-awareness, presence, and curiosity.
