Intraspecific Variation Among Clones Of A Naıve Rare Grass, David J. Gibson, Justin Dewey, Helene Goosens, Misty M. Dodd
Intraspecific Variation Among Clones Of A Naıve Rare Grass, David J. Gibson, Justin Dewey, Helene Goosens, Misty M. Dodd
Publications
Intraspecific variation can have a major impact on plant community composition yet there is little information available on the extent that such variation by an already established species affects interspecific interactions of an invading species. The current research examined the competitiveness of clones of a globally rare but locally common native grass, Calamagrostis porteri ssp. insperata to invasion by Alliaria petiolata, a non-native invasive species. A greenhouse experiment was conducted twice over consecutive years in which 15 clones from three populations of Calamagrostis were paired with rosettes of Alliaria in pots containing native forest soil previously uninvaded by Alliaria …
Non-Partisan Or Not Interested: The Carbondale League Of Women Voters' Response To Civil Rights During The 1960s, Jazma Sutton
Non-Partisan Or Not Interested: The Carbondale League Of Women Voters' Response To Civil Rights During The 1960s, Jazma Sutton
2014
This paper focuses on the policies and actions of the Carbondale branch of the LWV. In particular, it focuses on the confusions surrounding the LWV’s engagement with African American Civil Rights. Drawing on organizational papers, internal memoranda, and regional newspaper clippings, this paper analyzes the ambiguities of the LWV’s racial politics. It finds that at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, these women doubtlessly spent a great deal of time discussing the issues. Yet it is also true that a great deal of time was dedicated to finding ways to protect the LWV’s “image.” This often translated into overlooking …
Nonprofit Organizations, Social Media, And Mobile Applications, Melissa Schwedel
Nonprofit Organizations, Social Media, And Mobile Applications, Melissa Schwedel
Research Papers
Nonprofit organizations survive through grants and donations. As society progresses into the technology age, it is important for nonprofit organizations to follow suit and become more technologically adept. The days in which donations were obtained through direct mailings, phone calls, and emails are fading. In order to stay current with the most donors, nonprofit organizations need to have a presence on social media websites, and should explore the use of social media and text-to-give campaigns for the solicitation of donations. This paper attempts to provide insight to nonprofit organizations, on both national and local levels, regarding the advantages of using …

AN ABSTRACT OF THE RESEARCH PAPER OF
Dong Yu, for the Master of Arts degree in Media Theory and Research, presented on October 28th, 2013, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
TITLE: BULLDOZED: IN THE SHADOW OF PROGRESS
MAJOR PROFESSOR: Janice Thompson
China has been the fast growing economy in the human history. Since China initiated its “Open Door Policy” at the end of 1979, it has been in the fast lane regarding economic development. Tens of thousands of people have started their own business. For much of the population, especially in big cities, living standards have been improved …

Psychosocial Implications For Students With Learning Disabilites, Jordan D. Short
Psychosocial Implications For Students With Learning Disabilites, Jordan D. Short
Research Papers
Students with learning disabilities face many challenges throughout their academic careers. There are numerous assessments to diagnose students and many strategies to assist them in the classroom. There are three main learning disabilities which students can be diagnosed with: Dyslexia, Dysgraphia and Dyscalculia. There are currently an estimated number of six million students who are diagnosed with a learning disability. This study investigated if students with learning disabilities face more psychosocial challenges than their peers without learning disabilities. This study focuses on the psychosocial implications that students with learning disabilities face from peers, parents and school personnel. These psychosocial implications …

Fully Homomorphic Encryption For Wireless Network, Olive Mbianda
Fully Homomorphic Encryption For Wireless Network, Olive Mbianda
Research Papers
This work provides a mathematical approach of the Fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) and its implementation in a wireless network. FHE has been presented as the "Holy Grail" by the cryptographers. This special encryption scheme enables one to perform complex operations(both addition and multiplication) on a cypher text without ever decrypting the text. An immediate application is the delegated computation, an untrusted party can process the data without endangering the privacy of the source and the integrity of the data. The first FHE scheme was introduced in 2009, by Craig Gentry. His scheme was based on the properties of rings especially …
Sustainability Initiatives In The Workplace And Employee Productivity, Megan R. Nollman
Sustainability Initiatives In The Workplace And Employee Productivity, Megan R. Nollman
Research Papers
Sustainability in the workplace has the potential to affect many aspects of an organization, including employee productivity. Sustainable designers, such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) professionals, claim that sustainability has numerous positive impacts in the workplace. These impacts include fewer employee sick days, increased building occupant satisfaction, and increased employee productivity. Researchers that have studied this claim have found that in many cases, sustainable initiatives and buildings have had a slight to profound positive effects on occupant satisfaction, attendance, and productivity. Lower levels of satisfaction for lighting and acoustics are common, though, because many sustainable workplaces use …

The Hate Factory: A Glimpse Into The Effects Of The Prison Gang Subculture On Non-Violent Offenders, Jackson Fredman
The Hate Factory: A Glimpse Into The Effects Of The Prison Gang Subculture On Non-Violent Offenders, Jackson Fredman
Research Papers
In an effort to ascertain ways to combat the indoctrination of non-violent, low-level offenders into prison gangs, this study looks at a synthesis of previous research on gang management strategies in conjunction with interviews given to a select group of Southern Illinois prison administrators. It is concluded that the best way to keep these vulnerable offenders away from the influence of prison gangs is to quickly separate the two groups as best as possible. This study is admittedly modest in scope, but the findings are couched within current literature looking to determine effective ways to combat the spread of prison …
