Nicaragua: Before And After The Revolution, Laura M. Zaremba May 1992

Nicaragua: Before And After The Revolution, Laura M. Zaremba

Honors Theses

The victorious Sandinistas and their governing junta stood on the threshold of a Nicaragua eager to be transformed form the exploited, dependent, and terribly poor nation-state it had been virturally since its independence from Spain into a truly new society based on popular will and welfare. After a decade of governing with this goal in sight, however, the Sandinista government led by President Daniel Ortega was defeated in the 1990 elections. I will examine this electoral defeat as the last in a series of setbacks that prevented a revolutionary society from emerging. I will attempt to demonstrate how it was …

Analogue Study Of Pretherapy Disclosure Effects On Potential Clients' Expectations About Counseling: A Psychology 499 Senior Honors Thesis, Steven C. Jett

Honors Theses

Research is increasingly suggesting that therapist and client ratings of greater beneficialI outcomes from therapy are strongly related to client and therapist perceptions of increasing convergence and generally positive expectations before counseling even begins. Using an analogue format, this study attempts to fill a void in the counseling literature by investigating Christian and non-Chiistian subjects' expectations for counseling with a Christian counselor, an agnostic counselor, or a counselor with no specified theistic orientation. After reviewing an analogue counselor description, subjects responded to the modified Brief Form of Tinsley's (1982) Expectations About Counseling questionnaire. Subjects' theistic orientation was assessed according to …

Educating Low Income And Minority Children, Anita Michele Bazile

Honors Theses

This research analyzes the impact of selected social policies on the self-concept of Black families and their children in comparison to their European counterparts. Economics and education have been selected because they are critical variables in the dynamic interaction responsible for the foundation of adequate family functioning and child development. This precise analysis should suggest guidelines for working with Black families and children and for enhancing their self-concept and mental health through impacting existing social policy, analysis, and practice.

The Illinois Student Association: Its Past And Future, Michael Parker

The Illinois Student Association was created as a result of student recognition that meaningful policy creation and implementation requires an efficacious presence where the policy-makers, administrators and bureaucrats is developed in higher education. Students have sought to create a lasting, a stable, and a professional association capable of providing continuing contact with policy-makers, detailed analyses of student related policy issues, informational networking of campuses, and coordination of multi-campus efforts. The Illinois Student Association is the realization of sustained student activism to influence policy formulation and implementation.

Are Sexual Experiences In Childhood Related To Eating Disorders In A Sample Of College Students?, Sharin Sarkari

Honors Theses

A link has been suggested by psychologists and clinicians between sexual abuse in childhood and adolescence, and later eating disorders. The present study investigates childhood sexual experiences and the appearance of eating disorders in a college. sample. The Eating Attitudes Test and the Finkelhor Sexual Victimization Scale were used in a sample of 158 undergraduates. The data confirmed the hypotheses that there is a significant association between childhood sexual abuse and eating disorders. Those sexually abused between the ages of 12-16 reported significantly higher eating disorders. Therefore the possibility of sexual abuse must be assessed and results included in a …

Honors Theses

Using my past experience in historic costume preservation, written resources, and the knowledge of those interested in this area of clothing & textiles, museum studies, and costume research, I hope to transform the state of the historic costume facility in Quigley Hall to one that's organized, utilizes proper storage techniques, and is available for use by both faculty and students. As a result of this reorganization, I also hope to have the opportunity to share this learned knowledge with the students and faculty of the Clothing & Textiles Department through some formal means.

Event Related Potential Correlates Of Picture-Word Matching, Ketty Russeva May 1992

Event Related Potential Correlates Of Picture-Word Matching, Ketty Russeva

Honors Theses

Behavioral as well as electrophysiological evidence suggests that words are processed differently than pictures in a number of tasks. We used within-form comparisons in order to control for effects of differential accessibility to separate cognitive representations by picture and word stimuli. A "same"-"different" judgement task was employed which is known to modulate certain event-related potential (ERP) measures. The purpose of the study was to identify ERP variance components that reflect comparison decisions as a function of stimulus type. Sixteen adult subjects were tested in this study. Stimuli were printed names and drawings of twelve common objects. In half of the …
