A Smart Internet Of Things (Iot) Prototype For Accurate People Counting Towards Energy Efficient Buildings, Qian Huang, Kane Rodriguez, Chao Lu Nov 2017

A Smart Internet Of Things (Iot) Prototype For Accurate People Counting Towards Energy Efficient Buildings, Qian Huang, Kane Rodriguez, Chao Lu

ASA Multidisciplinary Research Symposium

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 30% of the energy used in commercial buildings is wasted. If the number of humans in each pre-determined thermal zone is aware, a building automation system (BAS) is able to intelligently adjust HVAC operation for each thermal zone to provide “just-enough” heating, cooling and ventilation to building users. Therefore, a people counting device that can be widely deployed with low price and failure rate, small form-factor, good usability, and conserved user privacy is highly desirable. Existing room occupancy detection sensors (e.g., passive infrared, camera, acoustic, RFID, CO2) cannot meet all these …

The Operationalizing Of Lynch’S Cognitive Representation Elements Of Large Scale Environments, Jon D. Davey Phd Aia Nov 2017

The Operationalizing Of Lynch’S Cognitive Representation Elements Of Large Scale Environments, Jon D. Davey Phd Aia

ASA Multidisciplinary Research Symposium

The result of operationalizing Lynch’s (1960) cognitive representation elements of large scale environments is a set of images that can be employed in a research project identifying the various domains of the brain where each of Lynch’s (1960) elements occur. With such data, designing wayfinding within buildings: in urban habitats, and even within virtual worlds can be better realized.

The research design will use Siegel and White’s (1975) model as a spatial representation of Lynch’s (1960) five elements of large-scale environments’ physical form. These contents of physical form are classified as followed: paths, edges, districts, nodes, and landmarks. It is …

Dark Site Observatory, Aaron W. Uhe

ASA Multidisciplinary Research Symposium

This project for our Architecture Studio was completed in collaboration with the Physics Department to create possible concepts for an observatory for the Solar Eclipses in 2017 and 2024.

Transcultural Interaction Between Refugees And The Bowling Green, Ky Community, Emily Hamilton Oct 2016

Transcultural Interaction Between Refugees And The Bowling Green, Ky Community, Emily Hamilton

ASA Multidisciplinary Research Symposium

In Bowling Green, Kentucky there is an expanding refugee population which is leading to a manifestation of problems in the form of cultural isolation, immigrant alienation and refugees failing the U.S. citizenship test. To combat these issues, a social intervention should occur in the form of a community resource center.

Senior Community Center In Qiqihar, China, Yumeng Sun, Yumeng Sun

ASA Multidisciplinary Research Symposium

The aging population of China is a serious problem that has caused senior resources and facilities to be in short supply. A senior community center can play a role in meeting the spiritual and cultural needs of this group, improving the community facilities for seniors’ daily activities.
