Taxation Of Cooperatives In South Dakota : An Evaluation Of Selected Tax Proposals, Marc R. Wiitala May 1972

Taxation Of Cooperatives In South Dakota : An Evaluation Of Selected Tax Proposals, Marc R. Wiitala

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Attempts to reform South Dakota's tax system will undoubtedly affect cooperatives. The economic viability of cooperatives depends in part on the economic impact of the tax system. Since cooperatives play a significant role in the South Dakota economy, it is necessary for policymakers to understand both how cooperatives will be affected by different aspects of the tax system and what consequence this will have for communities. The cooperative form of enterprise is dissimilar in many respects from other forms of economic enterprise (i.e., corporations, single proprietorships and partnerships). The economic philosophy of cooperative enterprise which forms the basis for developing …

Synthesis Of 3-Deoxy-N-Acetylglucosamine And Attempted Synthesis Of 4-Deoxy-N-Acetylglucosamine As Possible Antibacterial Agents, Gary C. Van Riper May 1972

Synthesis Of 3-Deoxy-N-Acetylglucosamine And Attempted Synthesis Of 4-Deoxy-N-Acetylglucosamine As Possible Antibacterial Agents, Gary C. Van Riper

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An antibacterial agent is a substance which destroys or suppresses bacterial growth or reproduction. Gerhard Domagk's discovery of the antibacterial activity of the sulfonamides began one of the brightest eras in modern anti-bacterial chemotherapy. The sulfonamides are effective and are still used today but the introduction of the antibiotics has made them less popular. Antibacterial agents cannot be classified by one chemical grouping or mechanism of action. The phenols and alcohols act by denaturing protein while others, such as arsenic and the heavy metals, exert their effect by combining with the sulfhydryl grouping present as an active site on certain …

An Integrated Circuit Analog Computer, Sthaporn Udomsin May 1972

An Integrated Circuit Analog Computer, Sthaporn Udomsin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Heathkit Model EC-1 Educational Analog Computer, priced at $199.95, is the least expensive general-purpose analog computer on the market. This computer contains nine unstabilized vacuum tube de amplifiers with de open loop voltage gain of about 1000. The low amplifier gain, and amplifier drift limit the accuracy of the solution. Results obtained are sometimes confusing. Many integrated circuit operational amplifiers available on the market seem to give much better performance, priced from a few dollars in monolithic form up to hundreds of dollars in hybrid form. The low-cost operational amplifiers, designed for various applications, are usually not intended for …

Electro anesthesia can be …

Mathematical Simulation Of Sediment Deposit In Estuaries, Yuh- Hua Tsai May 1972

Mathematical Simulation Of Sediment Deposit In Estuaries, Yuh- Hua Tsai

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is viewed as necessary and useful to devise a method which can be used to solve the problems of sediment deposit in estuaries more directly and completely. In this study, three basic equations have been extended to a more general case in which lateral inflows and various width of channel are considered. A solution of the problem has been obtained by Chang and Richards. In their research, three basic equations have been successfully reduced to two differential equations by assuming that the change in bed slope due to sediment deposit in a short period is insignificant compared with the …

Abstract Integration Theory, Anne Lowe Thiel May 1972

Abstract Integration Theory, Anne Lowe Thiel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There are many different theories of integration, several of which are not equivalent. In books such as [3] and [4] many of the theories are discussed in detail. This paper is devoted to developing an abstract theory of integration which contains many of the classical theories as special cases. In addition, the theory to be presented has been specifically designed to include the Riemann - complete integral which was recently introduced by Henstock [2]. All integrals considered will be integrals of so-called "point-interval functions." This is a modification of the idea of integration of interval functions which was first introduced …

The Effects Of Protein Level And Age On Performance, Carcass Characteristics And Nutrient Digestibility Of Growing-Finishing Swine, Tim S. Stahly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present trends toward the meat type hog and the consumer's demand for lean cuts have resulted in the investigation of methods to produce leaner pigs. During recent years there has been considerable interest in the effect of dietary protein levels on growth rate, feed efficiency and carcass characteristics of swine. Several reports have indicated that increased dietary protein levels may improve growth performance and/or carcass leanness without adversely affecting the quality of the pork produced. However, little research has been conducted to show if this decrease in carcass quality of pigs fed a low protein diet could be at …

Detection And Assay Of Viruses Using Latex Particles, Thomas Charles Sorensen May 1972

Detection And Assay Of Viruses Using Latex Particles, Thomas Charles Sorensen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When hemagglutination is caused by the virus particle itself, a particle joins two red blood cells together by forming a bridge between them. If sufficient hemagglutination particles are present, the red cells form clusters of larger aggregates which fall to the bottom of the test tube or well. It is this sort of biophysical phenomenon which is being investigated in this study. Rather than using red blood cells as the adsorbent, to the surface of which the virus adsorbs, some solid adsorbents have been utilized to substitute for the red cells in a variety of experimental manipulations. Bentonite has been …

Germination And Vegetative Propagation Of Native Prairie Forbs, James T. Sorensen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the late 1960's and early 1970's there arose an increased awareness of the ecological relationships of nature to man. Although this relationship has been known for some time and numerous books have been written on the subject, public awareness has been slow in coming. But for some unknown reason man has taken a turn to nature. He is becoming more involved with conservation of nature and appreciative of its aesthetic beauty. With this new awareness there has come a new era of camping, hiking, and riding, to mention only a few activities which man needs or wants to enable …

The Photochemistry Of Tetramethyl-3-Thio-1,3-Cyclobutanedione, Mason Ming-Sun Shen May 1972

The Photochemistry Of Tetramethyl-3-Thio-1,3-Cyclobutanedione, Mason Ming-Sun Shen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The first law of photochemistry, formulated in the works of Grotthus and Draper more than a century ago, states: Only the light which is absorbed by a molecule can be effective in producing photochemical change in the molecule. The law and its consequences are commonly taken for granted by photo chemists today. Until the advent of quantum mechanics, the effect of light on matter was not properly understood. As a result, during the primeval age of photochemistry numerous and wondrous photochemical reactions were discovered, but both useful application of these results and formulation of a unifying theory were lacking. From …

Classification Error Using Quantized Data, David V. Serreyn May 1972

Classification Error Using Quantized Data, David V. Serreyn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ability to make the correct decision is an ability that is perhaps desired by all human beings. Being able to make a correct decision is a function of the amount of information that is available to the decision maker. His ability to make a decision is enhanced by the use of machines specially designed for obtaining information or making decisions such as an electronic computer. Such is the case in the application of pattern recognition to a remote sensing problem. Pattern recognition is defined here as techniques which help distinguish between several classes such that the classification error is …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Artificial insemination (A.I.) has been commercially available to beef producers for nearly 20 years. However, most beef cattlemen do not use A.I. because of the labor and management required during the long breeding season. Successful estrus synchronization would allow optimum use of labor and facilities thus allowing maximum use of A.I. It would also enable the producer to more closely control calving dates. Thereby assuring a more uniform group of offspring at market time. More effective use of A.I. would also enhance the use of outstanding performance tested sires and aid in control of certain reproductive diseases. Control of the …

Gaussian Pythagorean Triples, Joyce G. Ramige Apr 1972

Gaussian Pythagorean Triples, Joyce G. Ramige

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For positive integers a, b, c, we call the ordered triple (a, b, c) a Pythagorean triple provided a2 + b2 + c2. A Pythagorean triple is said to be primitive if a and b are relatively prime. It is a well-known fact that a primitive Pythagorean triple (a, b, c) in which a is even can be represented by a = 2xy, b = x2 – y2, c = x2 + y2, where x and y are positive integers. Teigen and Hadwin note that it is not possible to represent all Pythagorean triples in this way. In particular, they …

Inventory Control Of Deteriorating Items, George C. Philip Apr 1972

Inventory Control Of Deteriorating Items, George C. Philip

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem of the control and maintenance of inventories of physical goods is common to most enterprises. In the past, inventories were considered as the 'graveyard' of American business, because surplus stock was a principal cause for business failures. However, in large scale enterprises the inventory system may become too large and complex to be analyzed intuitively and any deviation from the optimum inventory policy would mean substantial losses. As a result of the current small profit margins, proper inventory control has become even more important. The basic concept in inventory control consists of striking a balance between the cost …

History tells us that one of the most interesting topics of mathematics is elementary number theory, the arithmetic Gauss spoke of when he said, “Mathematics is the queen of the sciences and arithmetic the queen of mathematics." We will investigate one conjecture concerning the theory of numbers. Throughout this paper small case Latin letters with the exception of e and i will represent integers where the set of rational integers is denoted by Z. 1he Latin letters e and i respectively represent the base for the natural logarithms and the so-called imaginary unit for the set of complex numbers. An …

Study Of Laminar Heat Transfer In A Cone, Chang-Shieng Philip Hsia Apr 1972

Study Of Laminar Heat Transfer In A Cone, Chang-Shieng Philip Hsia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When a fluid flows through a conduit of different temperature from itself, a heat exchange occurs between them. In studying the heat transfer of the fluid in the conduit we can obtain information about the rate of heat absorption and losses, the temperature distributions, etc. This information is important in design work and to aid in the correct selection of construction and insulation materials. Sometimes the conduit or a section of the conduit is conical, as for example the diffuser in hydro-turbo machines and air compressors, the nozzles of steam or gas turbines, and various heating or exhaust ducts. Usually …

Alternative Methods Of Marketing South Dakota Wheat, William M.A. Murphy Apr 1972

Alternative Methods Of Marketing South Dakota Wheat, William M.A. Murphy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Wheat growers like other fanners speculate every time they plant or store a grain crop. Each year foreign demand, legislation, weather and other price influences cause market fluctuations which further aggravate the speculative situation. This problem is common among producers of hard red spring and winter wheat. Historically, farmers have marketed most of their grain during harvest season. The harvest season usually offers the crop year's low price for wheat.1 Despite this, farmers continue to deliver grain at harvest time. One might question; is this the only time to market grain? There was a time when grain buyers in the …
