Certain weather conditions and/or physical injury to the plant may result in the development of mold in various parts of the plant. Accumula¬tion of mold and production of mycotoxins may present a risk for livestock producers. However, after examination and analysis, moldy feeds may be able to be used in beef cattle diets—with little or no risk to the health of the animal.

Sulfur is an essential element needed by animals for many functions. About 0.15% of body weight is sulfur. It is found in the amino acids methionine, cysteine, cystine, homocysteine, and taurine; in chondroitin sulfate of cartilage; and in the B-vitamins thiamin and biotin. Methionine, thiamin, and biotin cannot be synthesized in cattle tissues, so they must be supplied in the diet or synthesized by ruminal microbes. The sulfur content of most feed sources reflects the sulfur amino acid content of the proteins in the feed. See table 1 for example sulfur concentrations for various feed ingredients.

Feed costs represent 50 to 70% of livestock production expenses and are a critical component of livestock profitability. In the Upper Midwest and Upper Great Plains, corn grain is a primary source of energy in livestock diets. Consequently, as the price of corn escalates, so does the cost of feeding livestock. But cost isn’t all: you also must address dietary and management considerations when coping with increased corn prices.

Co-products from corn and soybean processing industries can be excellent sources of nutrients for livestock. With the growth of ethanol production from corn and increasing number of soybeans processed in the Upper Midwest, livestock producers have many nutrient-dense coproduct feed resources readily available. In the Upper Midwest distillers dried grain with solubles (DDGS) derived from ethanol production and soybean hulls (SH) from soybean processing have created the greatest interest to sheep producers.

This guide will discuss and illustrate a possible scenario for conducting an effective on-farm research trial using paired-treatments in corn. Possible treatments comparisons might include: current vs. new hybrid, no starter vs. starter fertilizer, soil-incorporated vs. post-emergence applications, and before vs. after treatments. Treatments do not have to be applied at the same time or stage; one treatment might be applied early while the second is applied late.

The sharp increase in the price of corn in recent months is reason to take a closer look at alternative ration formulations. Before one decides to replace corn totally with other feeds, it may be best to consider some of the options available: 1) Feeding more forages and less grain mix. 2) Replacing part of all of the corn with other grains or grain by-products. 3) Feeding high-fat products. 4) Feeding other by-products. The nutrient content of many alternative feeds is listed in Table 1.

Distiller's grain is produced during the process of making ethanol from corn. This very complex process is simplified as described in the adjoining diagram. To make ethanol, corn is cooked with starch-degrading enzymes. This process breaks the starch in the corn to sugar. Yeast is then added to the mixture. As the yeast ferments the sugar, carbon dioxide (CO2) and ethanol are produced. The CO2 is vented off, and the ethanol is removed from this slurry. The slurry that remains can be separated into distillers wet grain and a thin liquid called sweetwater. The wet distiller's grain may be sold …

Phosphorus deficiencies in corn may be more severe after crop failure due to drought. Extensive research in South Dakota has shown corn planted on fields which have been fallowed the previous year have severe phosphorus deficiency early in the season with yield reductions up to 30 bushels per acre. Complete crop failure due to drought could be considered fallow because little or nothing grows on the field.
