The atmosphere of a psychiatric hospital ward has been found to have an influence on patient behavior and on treatment outcome. The ward atmosphere is affected by the patients, the multi—disciplinary team and the nurse who is the team member who spends the greatest amount of time on the ward. A multi-disciplinary team which shares similar attitudes concerning ward atmosphere is more likely to create a therapeutic ward atmosphere.

The main objective of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of hedging the· prime interest rate and Bank for Cooperatives seasonal rates with financial futures for South Dakota agricultural cooperatives. Most agricultural cooperatives borrow mainly from commercial banks and the Bank for Cooperatives, and the rates depend on the prime rate and Bank for Cooperatives seasonal loan rates (BC rates). This study will examine whether a local cooperative might use financial futures to hedge these two interest rates. Several studies conducted in South Dakota have shown significant yield increases in wheat and barley due to chloride (Cl) fertilization. The effects of Cl on oat were evaluated in the greenhouse and two field experiments. Five cultivars and 3 KC1 fertilizer levels (0, 58, and 117 Kg ha-1) were tested in a factorial arrangement. In a second experiment, five N fertilizer levels (0, 34, 68, 102, 136 kg ha-1) and 2 KC1 fertilizer levels (0 and 135 kg ha-1) on oat (Benson) were tested in a factorial arrangement. This research concentrated on the reproductive problem associated with the Ay. Granholm and Breck reported that lethal yellow females never produced more than three litters when put into production at puberty. Ay/a females are as reproductively efficient as their a/a littermates at a young age. Ay/a females progressively become obese and reproductively senescent beyond the age of 120 days. The obese Ay/a females beyond 120 days exhibit lower uterine weights and depressed ovulation. Upon treatment with exogenous pituitary gonadotropins, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (IH), the reproductively senescent AY/S! females' ovulatory rates were restored to near control levels. …

Alteration of the inherent characteristics of less preferred beef carcass portions to produce products with greater consumer appeal has been the ultimate goal of structured meat research. Consumer acceptance of structured products has been limited because of (1) low retail visibility, (2) diet/health concerns due to salt addition, and (3) undesirable uncooked product appearance due to discoloration and lack of fiber orientation. A qualitative analytical survey of rural, married males (n = 8) examined the nature and meaning of recreation and leisure activity participation for retirees. The data were collected by utilizing a structured interview guide. Additional quantitative data were collected with the aid of the McKechnie Leisure Activities Blank (LAB). The data were synthesized into individual case studies and analyzed for emerging themes and meanings. The findings suggest that these subjects are interested in a variety of recreation and leisure activities, particularly those that involve nature and the outdoors. This study investigated the extent to which the structural differentiation and the technology of private industry organizations were related to employee fringe benefits in South Dakota. This was accomplished through the development and testing of a theoretical framework and model which represented the modification and synthesis of Max Weber's theory of bureaucracy and Peter Blau's theory of structural differentiation. Using a mailed questionnaire, data were obtained on measures of structural differentiation, technology, and employee fringe benefits from a sample of the population of all private industry organizations in South Dakota which had 10 or more employees. There are a number of payments systems in the U.S. These include Fedwire, Clearing House Interbank Payments System (CHIPS) and Automated Clearing House (ACH). Although the Federal Reserve administers only Fedwire and ACH, it might also have to rescue CHIPS as a creditor of last resort. Denitrification is an important process involving the loss of nitrogen from agricultural soils. This study investigates denitrification on a Beadle clay loam and a Worthing silty clay loam in a landscape in Eastern South Dakota. Comparisons were made in 1986 and 1987 of these soils under four different tillage systems: Moldboard plowed, chisel plowed and disked, ridge tillage, and no tillage systems. Soil core samples (0 to 5 cm) from continuous corn plots were utilized to determine nitrogen loss by denitrification and volumetric moisture biweekly through the growing seasons. A comparison of drip cooling, zone cooling, and conventional ventilation was performed on lactating swine. Overall, the cooling systems did not significantly improve swine performance. The drip and zone systems highly significantly lowered sow respiration rates by 40 and 28 percent, respectively, when compared to the respiration rates of sows from a conventionally ventilated room. Older sows consumed ten percent more feed than younger sows. Older sows returned to estrus after weaning approximately two days sooner than younger sows. In 1942, Hartley proposed a new formulation of the Fourier integral identity by using cas (wt) as the transform kernel, where cas(wt) = cos(wt) + sin(wt), is an abbreviation for cosine and sine. It is called the Hartley transform and has many properties similar to those of the Fourier transform. Toxoplasma gondii is a coccidian parasite which produces a disseminated infection and reproductive failure in sheep. It is a major cause of abortion in sheep in New Zealand, Australia, and England. Within the last 5 years, T. gondii has been reported to cause ovine abortion in the United States. Individual flocks in New Zealand may lose 15-20 percent and sometimes as high as 50 percent of the lamb crop as a result of T. gondii induced abortion. Interspecific hybridization between the cultivated sunflower, Helianthus annuus L., and other Helianthus species is an important aspect of sunflower improvement, because it extends the array of genes available for use in breeding programs. Sunflower species have demonstrated resistance to many pests that affect the cultivated sunflower. Oil content and quality may also be improved through interspecific hybridization, as Helianthus species are sources of genetic variation for these traits. Three experiments were conducted using a total of 30 young weaned pigs, surgically fitted with simple T-cannula at the terminal ileum, to evaluate the effects of dietary crude protein (CP) and fiber on the ileal and fecal digestibilities of various dietary fractions. Pigs (avg wt, 7.9 kg) were rotated through a series of diets in crossover designs. Experiment 1 addressed the effect of 12.2, 17.2 and 20.8% dietary CP on ileal and fecal digestibilities of dietary dry matter (DM), nitrogen, amino acids, neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber, crude fiber, cellulose, hemicellulose lignin and ash. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of participating for 16 weeks in the Brookings Wellness Program on cardiovascular function and self-concept in 35-55 year old men and women. Forty-nine volunteer men and women participated in the study. The experimental group consisted of 24 subjects who enrolled in the Brookings Wellness Program between June 1, 1987 and February 19, 1988. The purpose of this investigation was to determine if a season of basketball competition effects the anaerobic power am capacity of college basketball players. Eleven members of the South Dakota State University men's basketball team and twelve non-athletic college-age males compared the experimental and control groups, respectively. Testing was completed and three different dates which were representative of the stages of a college basketball season. The first FFT algorithms were reported by Runge and Konig in 1924, and by Danielson and Lanczos in 1942. However, the FFT didn't receive much attention at all until Cooley and Tukey published their algorithm in 1965. The Cooley-Tukey algorithm is simple and widely used in many application software packages. Winograd developed his FFT in 1976, which is based upon the prime factor theory. It is typically faster than the Cooley-Tukey Algorithm, if the computer system has no multiplication instructions. Downy brome (Bromus tectorum L.) is a severe weed problem in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) throughout North America. Downy brome competes for space, light, nutrients in the soil, and most importantly moisture. Rydrych reported that a grower with reasonable control of downy brome can increase yield of winter wheat 6-12 bushels per acre.
