The writer in this problem is attempting to establish the relationship of scholastic achievement to regularity of attendance and participation in extra-curricular activities. The Brookings, South Dakota High School senior class of 1955 was selected for this study. Because extra-curricular participation is important, more study should be spent on this phase of education to improve the quality of extra-curricular activities and to encourage more pupil participation. Also, this problem may help establish the importance of regular daily attendance in our public schools and show that those who were in regular attendance attained greater achievement in their school work.

Once considered to be the inevitable fate of plant life exposed to low temperatures, plant injury is now subject to partial control or alteration under certain conditions. These conditions involve a genetic change in the plant protoplasm by breeding a hardier, more resistant variety or by a change in the environment of the plant that induces resistance to low temperatures. The latter change is frequently known as “hardening” of the plant. Of the many established and recorded religious groups in the United States over two hundred are classified as Protestant. The sociology of religion, however, has dealt mainly with the larger, more liberal denominations, leaving the many, smaller religious associations relatively unexplored. Nevertheless little information exists which is focused directly on the membership characteristics of a given denomination throughout a specific region. This is particularly true of the smaller Protestant religious associations, any of which are more fundamentalistic in their orientation than the larger denominations. In South Dakota several cases of injury to wheat from airplane application of 2,4-D by commercial applicators were reported. Some 120,000 acres of wheat were sprayed in South Dakota by commercial airplane applicators in 1953. Wheat growers, farm advisors, and research workers in weed control could not explain (1) why the injury was so variable in certain wheat growing regions during a given season, (2) why injury was not serious during some seasons and was an important factor in reduction of yields in others, (3) the conditions under which the injury occurred, (4) why no damage to wheat was reported …

High school principals consider the state championship debaters to be outstanding in every respect: in scholarship, leadership, personality, activities, and professional success after high school. These debaters have distinctive personalities and demonstrate leadership both in and outside of the classroom. The principals evaluated these students as scholastic leaders, with many of them receiving university scholarships upon graduation from high school. The superior intelligence of the group was acknowledged. It is apparent that school administrators consider the championship debaters to have been the distinguished citizens in their schools. The number and nature of stamens in flowers of the Curcurbitaceae has long been a controversial problem among students of floral morphology. Naudin 1885, according to Chakvarty (2), thought that 3 was the basic number of stamens in this family. Naudin imagined a 2-2-1 stamen arrangement where 2 is a complete stamen (tetrasporangiate), and 1 is a half-stamen (bisporangiate). In the few species of this family which have five stamens, he believed that the two complete stamens split resulting in what he called four half-stamens. Observed segregation ratios for qualitative traits in tetraploid alfalfa have been interpreted on both disomic and tetrasomic modes of inheritance. In fact, some tetrasomic ratios cannot be distinguished from disomic ones (13) without intensive analysis. For quantitative traits, arbitrarily established segregation ratios in themselves are incapable of interpretation with respect to mode of inheritance. Progressive change and fitness in species depend upon continuous variation; analogously, it may be reasonably inferred that artificial plant improvement too, rests upon the exploitation of continuous variation. South Dakota egg producers have long been faced with the fact that they receive the lowest average prices per dozen of any state, with the exception of North Dakota. The average price received by South Dakota egg producers from 1950 through 1952 was 31.2 cents per dozen as compared with a national average of 41.9 cents per dozen for the same period. In the classification of organic reactions, condensation is used in two different ways. In a very narrow sense, condensation means any reaction in which a carbon to carbon linkage is formed. In a broad sense, it refers to an organic double decomposition reaction in which the reactants are both large in molecules, and one of the products is a small molecule such as water, ammonia, or hydrogen chloride. An example of a condensation, as defined in the narrow sense, would be the reaction of acetaldehyde to form aldol. However, if the aldol is converted to crotonaldehyde with the elimination of …

The occurrence of a great number of poultry diseases which affect the respiratory systems of both chickens and turkeys has brought about extensive studies on control measures to curb losses due to these infections. The losses due to these infections are tremendous throughout the poultry producing areas of the world. Infectious laryngotracheitis, Newcastle disease, fowl pox, infectious bronchitis, chronic respiratory disease, infectious sinusitis, fowl cholera and aspergillosis cause similar symptoms and gross lesions (19). The induction of diploid true-breeding mutants by colchicine treatment of a true-breeding variety of sorghum vulgare Pers. Has been reported by Franzke and Ross (9); Ross, Franzke and Schuh (22); and others (7,10). It has been suggested that such mutant plants might result from point mutations made homozygous by a somatic reduction of the chromosomes followed by a doubling of the chromosome number in a cell which organized a growing point after the original one had been inactivated during c-tumor formation. This study was made to determine the effect of the body’s diurnal temperature variation upon accuracy in performing specific motor skills. The study involved the establishment of a basic temperature curve after which the subject was tested through a series of accuracy tests devised by the author. The subject for this study, for reasons of convenience, was the author. Use of such a small sample, however, is a limitation of the study. The subject was in good health and reasonably sound physical condition.

Colchicine-treated seedlings of a true-breeding variety of Sorghum vulgare Pers. were found to differ in appearance from the untreated checks while retaining the original chromosome number (1,8). Some of the mutant plants bred true for the changed characters in succeeding generations. Cytological examination by Harpstead et al (2) showed no abnormal pairing relationships or detectable chromosomal abnormality in the meiotic stages of the treated material, the untreated material, or their F1 crosses. From these findings it was postulated that colchicine caused a somatic reduction of the chromosomes together with concurrent mutagenic effects and subsequent restoration to the diploid number. A …

A reduced profit margin in the poultry business has brought about the demand for more efficient methods of poultry farming. A savings of a few cents per bird on the cost of raising poultry may mean the difference between profit or loss. With this is mind an efficiency study was made of three types of electric brooders. Two of these types of brooders, the infra-red lamp and the conventional electric resistance type heating element and hover, are available commercially.
