Wage Effects Of Non-Wage Labour Costs, María Cervini, José Ignacio Silva, Xavier Ramos Sep 2014

Wage Effects Of Non-Wage Labour Costs, María Cervini, José Ignacio Silva, Xavier Ramos

José Ignacio Silva

We study wage effects of two important elements of non-wage labour costs: firing costs and payroll taxes. We exploit a reform that introduced substantial reduction in these two provisions for unemployed workers aged less than thirty and over forty five years who got a permanent job. A matching model with heterogeneous workers predicts positive wage effects of reducing firing costs but ambiguous wage effects of reducing payroll taxes, for both new entrant and incumbent workers. Difference-in-differences estimates and simulation of the model show positive wage effects for both new entrant and incumbent workers. The reduction in firing costs accounts for …

Reconsidering The Date Of The Baptismal Font In San Isidoro, Leon, Spain, Harriet M. Sonne De Torrens Dr.

Harriet M Sonne de Torrens Dr.

The baptismal font that stands today in the Cahpel of the Salazares n the Royal Collegiate Church of San Isidoro of Seville in Leon, Spain has been assigned an early eleventh century date, ca. 1000-1050, making it the earliest of all known extant fonts, in both Spain and in the Latin West, that are ornamented with scenes from the life of Christ. This essay reviews the scholarship and proposes a 12th century date based on comparative examples in both Spain and the larger context of the Latin West.

Building Human Rights And Development In A Migration Context: The Spanish Case, Ángeles Solanes Corella Feb 2012

Building Human Rights And Development In A Migration Context: The Spanish Case, Ángeles Solanes Corella

Ángeles Solanes Corella

The sheer complexity of migration gives rise to inevitable stereotypes that often hamper any positive analysis of this phenomenon. Many factors contribute to the biased perception that human mobility is mainly driven by economic motives. The ebb and flow of economies and the tyrannical demands of the marketplace seem to override the study of what really motivates migration, and obscure the intrinsic link between migration, human rights and development.

The confused discourse on human development, together with a certain humanist approach to human rights, at times fails to clarify the relationship between human rights and development with migration. Indeed, the …

Emerging Forms Of Cross-Sector Collaboration In The Spanish Innovation System, Manuel Fernández-Esquinas, Irene Ramos-Vielba Mar 2011

Emerging Forms Of Cross-Sector Collaboration In The Spanish Innovation System, Manuel Fernández-Esquinas, Irene Ramos-Vielba

Manuel Fernández-Esquinas

The Spanish innovation system has grown since the 1980s following a predominantly supply-side model where R&D capacities have concentrated in universities and public research organizations. Since then efforts have been made to stimulate cross-sector linkages. These have relied on university– industry projects, various forms of interface organizations, technology centres and programmes to encourage mobility. However, initiatives have encountered some significant drawbacks. Due to a lack of progress, a range of centres and other collaborative arrangements have emerged since 2000 to try to foster greater collaboration and firm based innovation. The process of policy change and their institutional structure are examined …

Immigration Law Spanish- Style Ii: A Study Of Spain’S Voluntary Immigrant Return Plan And Circular Migration, Maria P. Lopez

Maria Pabon Lopez

In 2008, following the downturn in its economy, Spain undertook a bold experiment in circular migration, by enacting a voluntary repatriation plan Plan de Retorno Voluntario. This plan gave immigrant workers in the country who could not find employment in Spain the opportunity to return to their countries of origin and take with them their accrued unemployment benefits. After discussing the background and history of Spain’s immigration law, this article explores the current situation regarding immigrant workers in Spain, as well as the hardships faced by immigrants during the economic downturn. The article then examines the Plan de Retorno Voluntario …

Freedom Of Speech In American & Spanish Law: A Comparative Perspective, Alfredo Coll Jan 2010

Freedom Of Speech In American & Spanish Law: A Comparative Perspective, Alfredo Coll

ALFREDO COLL

The Supreme Court of the United States, particularly in the area of obscenity within freedom of speech, has imposed stringent procedural requirements on governmental action aimed at controlling the exercise of first amendment rights. This study argues that several lessons can be learned from these cases: that a judicial body, following an adversary hearing, must decide on the protected character of the speech, and that the judicial determination must either precede or immediately follow any governmental action which restricts speech. The authors also compare and contrast free speech protection in the United States as compared to Spain by analyzing several …

On Universal Jurisdiction—Birth, Life And A Near-Death Experience?, Helena Gluzman Jan 2009

On Universal Jurisdiction—Birth, Life And A Near-Death Experience?, Helena Gluzman

Bocconi Legal Papers

This paper investigates the topic of universal jurisdiction, ie the supranational prosecution and repression—without the necessity of a link between the accused and the prosecuting state—of crimes of such gravity and magnitude as to collide with certain core values accepted by the international community and transcending the peculiarity of national interests. The focus of the chapter is exactly to try and discern the scope of universal jurisdiction, distinguishing between the two different versions of universality theorized by contemporary authors: ‘conditional universal jurisdiction’, which requires the presence of the accused in the prosecuting state, and ‘absolute universal jurisdiction’, according to which …

Spanish And Mamluk Carpets: Comparisons Of Decoration And Structure, Carol Bier Jan 2004

Spanish And Mamluk Carpets: Comparisons Of Decoration And Structure, Carol Bier

Carol Bier

Two recent exhibitions, Carpets of Andalusia and Mamluk Rugs from Egypt, at The Textile Museum afforded a rare opportunity to compare two radically different rug-weaving traditions from the perspectives of design and weave structure. While not often evident to the casual viewer, there is a significant relationship between design, pattern, and weave structure in all Oriental carpets. The opportunity to explore such differences warrants careful examination and critical viewing. The Mamluk rugs all probably date from the last quarter of the 15th century. They comprise a cohesive group defined by color, a geometric style, and similarity of weave characteristics.
