The American Library Association’s 1982 statement on Diversity in Collection Development reminds librarians of our professional responsibility “to select and support the access to materials on all subjects that meet, as closely as possible, the needs, interests, and abilities of all persons in the community the library serves. This includes materials that reflect political, economic, religious, social, minority, and sexual issues.” The William H. Hannon (WHH) Library’s vision statementaffirms that the library views itself as Bridge, Gateway, Agora, and Enterprise. To ensure that our materials collection aligns with our institutional vision and meets the research needs of our diverse campus …

Discovery Of Platelet-Type 12-Human Lipoxygenase Selective Inhibitors By High-Throughput Screening Of Structurally Diverse Libraries., Joshua D. Deschamps, Jeffrey T. Gautschi, Stephanie Whitman, Tyler A. Johnson, Nadine C. Gassner, Phillip Crews, Theodore R. Holman

Tyler Johnson

Human lipoxygenases (hLO) have been implicated in a variety of diseases and cancers and each hLO isozyme appears to have distinct roles in cellular biology. This fact emphasizes the need for discovering selective hLO inhibitors for both understanding the role of specific lipoxygenases in the cell and developing pharmaceutical therapeutics. To this end, we have modified a known lipoxygenase assay for high-throughput (HTP) screening of both the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the UC Santa Cruz marine extract library (UCSC-MEL) in search of platelet-type 12-hLO (12-hLO) selective inhibitors. The HTP screen led to the characterization of five novel 12-hLO inhibitors …

Objectives: To identify trends in library resource acquisitions and cancellations among different types of libraries serving health science users in Wisconsin.

Methods: A Qualtrics survey was created. Introductory questions were designed to collect information on what major databases and resources the various libraries make available to their users. Subsequent questions concentrated on anticipated cancellations as we all as desired additions. Additional questions about factors in decision making and whether the libraries were participating in consortia purchases were asked. Libraries serving health science users were invited to participate in the survey conducted in May 2017. Responses were limited to one per …

Biological Markers For Pulpal Inflammation: A Systematic Review., Dan-Krister Rechenberg, Johnah C. Galicia, Ove A. Peters Oct 2017

Biological Markers For Pulpal Inflammation: A Systematic Review., Dan-Krister Rechenberg, Johnah C. Galicia, Ove A. Peters

Ove Peters

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Pulpitis is mainly caused by an opportunistic infection of the pulp space with commensal oral microorganisms. Depending on the state of inflammation, different treatment regimes are currently advocated. Predictable vital pulp therapy depends on accurate determination of the pulpal status that will allow repair to occur. The role of several players of the host response in pulpitis is well documented: cytokines, proteases, inflammatory mediators, growth factors, antimicrobial peptides and others contribute to pulpal defense mechanisms; these factors may serve as biomarkers that indicate the status of the pulp. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review was to …

Feeding The Fledgling Repository: Starting An Institutional Repository At An Academic Health Sciences Library., Ann E. Koopman, Am, Daniel G. Kipnis, Msi

Daniel G. Kipnis

In 2005, the Scott Memorial Library at Thomas Jefferson University started an institutional repository (IR), the Jefferson Digital Commons (JDC) . Originally intended as a showcase for faculty scholarship, it has evolved to serve also as a university press for original journals and newsletters, and as an institutional archive. Many lessons have been learned about marketing techniques, common IR issues, and advantages of an IR for a library. IR recruitment has come to be viewed as yet another form of collection development and has been integrated into all forms of the Library's outreach. Jefferson's academic health sciences environment has proven …

Deepening Scholarly Access To Geppō: Toward A Collectively Contributed Article Citation Database, Michael P. Williams

Michael P Williams

Geppō 月報, journal‐like pamphlets issued within monographic sets, are important resources containing material that complements the volumes with which they are issued.1 Typical contents for geppō include: brief academic articles, chronologies, bibliographies, reminiscences‐as‐biographies, editorial notes, biographical sketches of contributors to the series, errata and corrigenda, tables of contents, indexes, and information about other volumes in the series. Despite their wealth of contents—much of which can be found only in these publications—geppō traditionally have been overlooked and underappreciated. In many libraries, they have been lost or discarded. Based on an assessment of the current situation of geppō at the University of …

Similarity Measures For Compressed Image Databases, P Sangassapaviriya, Philip Ogunbona Sep 2012

Similarity Measures For Compressed Image Databases, P Sangassapaviriya, Philip Ogunbona

Professor Philip Ogunbona

For image database applications it is desirable that functions such as searching, browsing and partial recall be done without the need to totally decompress the image. This has the advantage of alleviating possible burden and degradation that the network may suffer. Edge images derived from wavelet-compressed images are considered as index that can be queried by example. Zernike moment invariants are used as descriptors for the index edge image and the query sketch image. The descriptions are compared for the purpose of database searching. The query images were allowed to undergo translation, rotation, scaling and some deformation. Simulation results gave …

Content-Based Retrieval From Compressed-Image Databases, Philip Ogunbona, P Sangassapaviriya Sep 2012

Content-Based Retrieval From Compressed-Image Databases, Philip Ogunbona, P Sangassapaviriya

Professor Philip Ogunbona

There is an enormous amount of multi-media data including images, video, speech, audio and text, distributed among the various computer nodes on the Internet. The extent to which a user wiU be able to derive useful information from these data depends largely on the ease with which required data can be retrieved from the databases. The share volume of the data also poses a storage constraint on the databases; hence these data will need to exist in the compressed form on the databases. In this paper we concentrate on image data and propose a new paradigm in which a compressed …

Nonsyndromic or isolated cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P) occurs in wide geographic distribution with an average birth prevalence of 1/700. We used direct sequencing as an approach to study candidate genes for CL/P. We report here the results of sequencing on 20 candidate genes for clefts in 184 cases with CL/P selected with an emphasis on severity and positive family history. Genes were selected based on expression patterns, animal models, and/or role in known human clefting syndromes. For seven genes with identified coding mutations that are potentially etiologic, we performed linkage disequilibrium studies as well in 501 …

Not Your Parents' Library Video, Deeann Allison

DeeAnn Allison

A video with Buffy, a student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln shows her parents how to do research the "NU" way. Using a computer in her dorm room she is able to search the catalog to find books, renew books, and save search preferences so she can repeat them without having to re-enter the searches later. She also shows her parents how she saves time writing papers by finding articles using a new tool that searches across many databases at the same time and then connects to the full article, which she reads on her computer. She also demonstrates how …

That's My Content. That's My Creativity. That's My Curriculum! Do You Want Copyright And Cataloguing With That?, Pru Mitchell

Pru Mitchell

What are libraries doing about collecting and managing user-generated content? In an era of globalisation we increasingly value the unique and the locally grown over the mass-produced, high food miles equivalent. At the growers' market we carefully select ingredients despite the odd shapes, unpredictable quantities and without accompanying metadata about ingredients, nutritional value and use-by dates. However, it seems that teacher librarians are slow to apply the same philosophy when they select resources for their libraries. Instead of relishing the variety, freshness and freedom of open, user-generated content, they are restricting library users to a diet of commercial content and …

Roger M. Groves

FACEBOOK 2 BLACKBERRY AND DATABASE TRADING SYSTEMS: MORPHING SOCIAL NETWORKING TO BUSINESS GROWTH IN A GLOBAL RECESSION Summary Facebook has now applications to the Blackberry Smartphone and IPhone. And Facebook has exploded internationally. If the Facebook social networking technology has applications to Blackberry, why not business? And as any business looks for growth, the market is not an existing heavily saturated United States, but a global market. Can the Facebook model of data sharing be customized to propel US technology firms into new international markets? This article claims the affirmative, through a multilateral clearing system, with credits and vouchers, as …

Schengen Information System Ii: The Balance Between Civil Liberties, Security And Justice, K. Michael, M. G. Michael

M. G. Michael

This paper investigates the application of the Schengen Information System (SIS) in the European Union and the balance between civil liberties, security and justice. It provides an overview of the SIS, technical issues related to the maintenance of the SIS, and transnational legal issues in the context of national security and public policy. Given that citizens can now move freely between States in Europe, the paper investigates how the SIS is being administered, applied, and enforced and some of the potential problems that arise from cross mutual state recognition of SIS alerts. This paper argues that the SIS has a …

Reconciling While Tolerating Disagreement In Collaborative Data Sharing, Nicholas E. Taylor, Zachary G. Ives Apr 2008

Reconciling While Tolerating Disagreement In Collaborative Data Sharing, Nicholas E. Taylor, Zachary G. Ives

Zachary G Ives

In many data sharing settings, such as within the biological and biomedical communities, global data consistency is not always attainable: different sites' data may be dirty, uncertain, or even controversial. Collaborators are willing to share their data, and in many cases they also want to selectively import data from others - but must occasionally diverge when they disagree about uncertain or controversial facts or values. For this reason, traditional data sharing and data integration approaches are not applicable, since they require a globally \emph{consistent} data instance. Additionally, many of these approaches do not allow participants to make updates; if they …

Passport To Information Day.Pdf, Lia Hemphill, Elena Soltau

Elena Soltau

“If you build it, they will come” (Frankish & Robinson, 1989) was a powerful motivation for transforming an Iowa cornfield into a baseball diamond, but does it apply to librarians when faced with purchasing new information resources? What happens if you buy it and no one comes? This is precisely the dilemma many libraries face when purchasing new resources. Librarians painstakingly select the best resources for their users, despite overcoming budget constraints, only to have the usage statistics show that these resources are continually underutilized. This issue has mystified librarians for years. How can a library effectively market its electronic …

The Why Of The Beholder: An Analysis Of The Use Of Art Image Databases By Art Historians, Rose Fortier Dec 2006

The Why Of The Beholder: An Analysis Of The Use Of Art Image Databases By Art Historians, Rose Fortier

Rose Fortier

In the field of art history, there is a great potential for the use of art image databases. However, there is little literature that deals specifically with the needs and desires of art historians when it comes to art image databases. This thesis fills the gap in the literature with a user study of the use of art image databases by art historians. It includes a survey of what databases are used, why they are used, and to what extent they are used by art history professors. Results indicate that many issues in the usability and design of currently available …
