Human lipoxygenases (hLO) have been implicated in a variety of diseases and cancers and each hLO isozyme appears to have distinct roles in cellular biology. This fact emphasizes the need for discovering selective hLO inhibitors for both understanding the role of specific lipoxygenases in the cell and developing pharmaceutical therapeutics. To this end, we have modified a known lipoxygenase assay for high-throughput (HTP) screening of both the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the UC Santa Cruz marine extract library (UCSC-MEL) in search of platelet-type 12-hLO (12-hLO) selective inhibitors. The graph database, a relatively new phenomenon, is well suited to the burgeoning information era in which we are increasingly becoming immersed. Here, the guest editors briefly explain how a graph database works, its relation to the relational database management system (RDBMS), and its quantitative and qualitative pros and cons, including how graph databases can be harnessed in a hybrid environment. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Pulpitis is mainly caused by an opportunistic infection of the pulp space with commensal oral microorganisms. Depending on the state of inflammation, different treatment regimes are currently advocated. Predictable vital pulp therapy depends on accurate determination of the pulpal status that will allow repair to occur. The role of several players of the host response in pulpitis is well documented: cytokines, proteases, inflammatory mediators, growth factors, antimicrobial peptides and others contribute to pulpal defense mechanisms; these factors may serve as biomarkers that indicate the status of the pulp. Despite their wealth of contents—much of which can be found only in these publications—geppō traditionally have been overlooked and underappreciated. For image database applications it is desirable that functions such as searching, browsing and partial recall be done without the need to totally decompress the image. This has the advantage of alleviating possible burden and degradation that the network may suffer. Edge images derived from wavelet-compressed images are considered as index that can be queried by example. Zernike moment invariants are used as descriptors for the index edge image and the query sketch image. The descriptions are compared for the purpose of database searching. We describe a state-of-the-art system using the Oracle RDBMS and J2EE technologies to provide remote, Internet based data management. The system incorporates efficient submission and retrieval of images and metadata, indexing of metadata for efficient searching, and complex relational query capabilities.

Nonsyndromic or isolated cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P) occurs in wide geographic distribution with an average birth prevalence of 1/700. We used direct sequencing as an approach to study candidate genes for CL/P. We report here the results of sequencing on 20 candidate genes for clefts in 184 cases with CL/P selected with an emphasis on severity and positive family history. Genes were selected based on expression patterns, animal models, and/or role in known human clefting syndromes. For seven genes with identified coding mutations that are potentially etiologic, we performed linkage disequilibrium studies as well in 501 …
