Discrimination and strained co-worker relationships based on gender, race or sexual orientation are forms of bullying in the workplace. This research examines firefighter perceptions with regard to bullying as defined above. Survey questions were based on the National Report Card on Women and Firefighting study (Hulett, Bendick, Thomas & Miccio, 2008). The web-based survey was distributed through the National Fire Academy Training, Resources and Data Exchange Network, (TRADENET). Findings from 113 completed surveys indicated that most firefighters did not perceive bullying issues were pervasive in the fire service. However there were large differences in perception between female and male firefighters. …

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University researchers analyzed 811 (118 faculty and 693 student) comments from open response areas of a survey to determine the perception of faculty regarding group work in the academic setting. The biggest issue noted by both groups was allocation of grades for group members. Students perceived that all students received the same grade in a group project, regardless of effort. Most faculty did not share that perception, but noted difficulties in assigning group grades as well. Faculty and students described difficulties encountered by students when working on group projects in online or distance learning settings due to limited …

Pepperdine librarians created a comprehensive guide on publishing resources in response to questions we have received over the year from professors on topics such as the best journals to publish in, the prestige of journals, and how often their articles are cited. By creating this guide, we increased our knowledge of bibliometrics, which involves measuring the influence of scholarly research based on how often articles, books and journals are cited by other researchers. We have increased faculty engagement with the library because professors are interested in resources that assist them with the publishing and ultimately their success as scholars. Pepperdine …

This study considers an appropriate expression to estimate the output power of solar chimney power plant systems (SCPPS). Recently several mathematical models of a solar chimney power plant were derived, studied for a variety of boundary conditions, and compared against CFD calculations. An important concern for modeling SCPPS is about the accuracy of the derived pressure drop and output power equation. To elucidate the matter, axisymmetric CFD analysis was performed to model the solar chimney power plant and calculate the output power for different available solar irradiation. The paper analyzes the impact of import quotas on the welfare of different regions belonging to a single country. The regions compete with one another using Cournot conjectures and international trade is hindered by import quotas. Our results can help the country to determine the optimal import quotas and the best way to allocate import permits between regions. Wefind three mains results. First, we show how the world price, the difference in production costs between regions and the relative market size determine the allocation of import quotas, the interregional trade and the rent of import permits holders. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease; survival in ALS is typically 3–5
years. No treatment extends patient survival by more than three months. Approximately 20% of familial
ALS and 1–3% of sporadic ALS patients carry a mutation in the gene encoding superoxide dismutase 1
(SOD1). In a transgenic ALS mouse model expressing the mutant SOD1G93A protein, silencing the SOD1
gene prolongs survival. One study reports a therapeutic effect of silencing the SOD1 gene in systemically
treated adult ALS mice; this was achieved with a short hairpin RNA, a silencing molecule that has raised

This Article considers whether the Geneva Act (2015) of the 1958 Lisbon Agreement achieved a reconciliation between the common-law approach to protecting certain GIs as trademarks and the (currently) mostly European approach of using a sui generis system to protect GIs. In “Old Lisbon” as in many parts of Europe—and perhaps more strikingly in France—GIs have deep roots in the terroir. And the terroir matters: it is not an exaggeration to say that some countries link terroir to national identity. New World producers see things differently, but they also recognize the value of geographic origin, at least for certain …

Caffeine consumption is ubiquitous with greater than 50% of the adult U.S. population consuming
coffee on a regular basis. Although deaths in the United States related directly to
caffeine overdose is small, hospitals are reporting a surge in caffeine overdoses presenting in the
emergency department. From January 1 to July 31, 2015, poison centers logged 1,675 reports
involving highly caffeinated energy drinks. Almost two- thirds of these incidents involved children
18 years or younger.4 The availability of caffeine in liquid and solid forms makes caffeine-
related risks a public health concern.

Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a disease characterized by intense and debilitating fatigue not due to physical activity that has persisted for at least 6 months, post-exertional malaise, unrefreshing sleep, and accompanied by a number of secondary symptoms, including sore throat, memory and concentration impairment, headache, and muscle/joint pain. In patients with post-exertional malaise, significant worsening of symptoms occurs following physical exertion and exercise challenge serves as a useful method for identifying biomarkers for exertion intolerance. . Evidence suggests that intestinal dysbiosis and systemic responses to gut microorganisms may play a role in the symptomology of ME/CFS. As such, …

Cytochrome b5 (CYB5A) is an important electron transfer protein with homologues in a number of different organisms. In pigs, CYB5A is related to boar taint because of its role in androstenone biosynthesis. To determine the variety of CYB5A expression in pig breeds, genetic variations in the porcine CYB5A promoter region in both Chinese and European pig breeds were examined. Three single nucleotide polymorphisms (NC_010443.4:

Tadpoles of Hyperolius castaneus and H. jackie were found in the Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda and adjacent areas. Tadpoles of both species were identified by DNA-barcoding. At the shore of a bog pool three clutches of H. castaneus of apparently different age, all laid on moss pads (Polytrichum commune, Isotachis aubertii) or grass tussocks (Andropogon shirensis) 2–5 cm above the water level, were found. One clutch of H. castaneus was infested by larval dipterid flies. The most recently laid clutch contained about 20 eggs within a broad egg-jelly envelope. The eggs were attached to …

Later schools of sociological thought owe much to the works of Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, Max Weber and George Simmel. While their individual dialectics vary greatly, each had a substantive effect on the development of sociology as a viable discipline within the academy. In Marx, we see an attempt to incite real political change via his incisive writings on the exploitative nature of capitalism, bourgeoning industrialism and bourgeois ideology. In Durkheim, we see a concerted attempt to break with the practice of “inconsequential” philosophizing so as to fashion a programmatic methodology whereby “social facts” are studied scientifically. This study investigated preservice teachers from two teacher education programs,
elementary generalists and bilingual generalists (who will teach all subjects in both
English and Spanish), about their instructional design abilities via examination of
their ability to integrate interdisciplinary-themed activities into mathematics lessons.
The findings illustrate the value provided by differentiating teacher preparation for
preservice bilingual teachers—especially for challenging STEM-related (science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics) subjects such as mathematics—based on
their distinctive pedagogical, cognitive, and linguistic requirements.

Although adverse effects of suggestive interviewing on children's accuracy are well documented, it remains unclear as to whether these effects vary depending on the valence of and the actor implicated in suggestions. In this study, 124 3-8-year-olds participated in a classroom activity and were later questioned about positive and negative false details. The interviewer provided positive reinforcement when children acquiesced to suggestions and negative feedback when they did not. Following reinforcement or feedback, young children were comparably suggestible for positive and negative details. With age, resistance to suggestions about negative details merged first, followed by resistance to suggestions about positive …

Phrasal verbs, such as "run up" in "They always run up our electric bill," have long been of interest to researchers of English linguistics. Scholars have been particularly focused on the definition and categorization of these multi-word items, as well as their grammatical, pragmatic, and semantic functions. Additionally, phrasal verbs have been examined historically, and recently corpus methods have been used to begin investigating phrasal verb frequency and patterns of variation across registers. An obsolescence study is one of the main areas of bibliometrics in library and information science. The study attempts to discover the obsolescence rate of psychology literature cited in the 141 doctoral theses awarded by the S.V. University Tirupati, Osmania University, Hyderabad, and Andhra University, Visakhapattanam, from 1963-2005. Half-life of journal citations in psychology was found to be 14 years and 19 years for book citations.
