The study develops a bio-economic modelling framework that permits simultaneous assessment of the effects of technology change and policy measures on household welfare and agro-ecological sustainability indicators. The bio-economic modelling framework expands traditional farm household models to incorporate direct consumption utility functions, to allow for multiple objectives and to permit a meaningful interface with biophysical process models. The resulting model combines econometrically estimated equations in a mathematical programming framework. Model outcomes are analysed using metamodelling tecyhniques.

The bio-economic modelling framework is relevant for policy analysis related to resource degradation in developing countries. The model is applied to Cercle de Koutiala …

A wide variety of exotic tree pests can readily be transported into the United States on untreated wooden pallets, crating, bracing, and other solid wood packing materials (SWPM). Recent introductions of forest pests associated with importation of SWPM demonstrate that current United States import regulations are inadequate to exclude such pests. Nearly all (97 percent) of the quarantine-significant tree pests found by port inspectors are associated with SWPM. In spite of current bark-free import requirements, about 9 percent of maritime shipments contain bark, which provides habitat for numerous organisms. Prior analyses of the National Institute of Mental Health Treatment of Depression Collaborative Research Program demonstrated that perfectionism was negatively related to outcome, whereas both the patient's perception of the quality of the therapeutic relationship and the patient contribution to the therapeutic alliance were positively related to outcome across treatment conditions (S. With regard both to inhibiting Internet pornography and promoting Internet privacy, the adequacy of self-help alternatives ought to play a crucial role in evaluating the propriety of state action. Legislation that would have restricted Internet speech considered indecent or harmful to minors has already faced and failed that test. Several prominent organizations dedicated to preserving civil liberties argued successfully that self-help technologies offered less restrictive means of achieving the purported ends of such legislation, rendering it unconstitutional. Despite the growing role of sponsorship in the marketing activities of firms worldwide, academic research in this area has been limited. Adopting a classical conditioning framework, this research examines the effects of consumers’ attitudes about a sports event, their perceptions of sponsor-event fit and their attitudes about the sponsor on a multi-dimensional measure of sponsorship response. The results suggest that sponsor-event fit, perceived sincerity of the sponsor, perceived ubiquity of the sponsor and attitude towards the sponsor are key factors in generating a favorable response from sponsorship. As the Chinese economy reforms, a huge new population of rural-urban migrants is transforming the urban labor force. This article explores some of the most important reasons for the emergence of the floating population in China. We argue that the neoclassical model alone is not adequate to explain the massive rural-urban internal migration underway in China. Instead, ideas drawn from both sociological theories of segmented markets and institutional economics are used to supplement the standard neoclassical explanation. A program designed to encourage university faculty and teaching assistants (TAs) to use cooperative learning in undergraduate classrooms was evaluated through the perspectives of faculty, TAs and students. The program was part of an initiative called DiverSCity, and the evaluation focused on the initial climate and culture of the college and responses to a series of faculty seminars conducted to introduce faculty to collaborative instruction and to encourage its use for the creation of diversity. Battered Women In The Restraining Order Process: Observations On A Court Advocacy Program, Angela M. Moe

Between the months of January and May, 1998, the author spent approximately 150 hours as a legal advocate in a court advocacy program in southeastern Wisconsin that assists battered women obtain restraining orders. This article reports observations of how legal advocates in the program are affecting battered women's lives through their services as well as accounts of battered women's experiences in the court system and responses by court personnel to them. These observations are discussed in relation to existing research and theory on work with battered women and to the social context in which such work occurs.
