Optically Induced Periodic Structures In Smectic-C Liquid Crystals, Antal Jákli, A. Vajda, E. Benkler, Janossy, Peter Palffy-Muhoray
Antal Jakli
We explore periodic structures of smectic-C (SmC) liquid crystals, induced optically by a polarization grating. The studied cells contain a passive surface of rubbed polyimide and an active photosensitive substrate of ate-dye doped polyimide. In a nematic phase the director field can be periodic independent of the angle between the grating vector and the rubbing direction. In the SmA phase periodic structure can be induced only by layer undulations. The SmC behaves similarly to the nematic phase, but the director can rotate only on a cone, which results in a more complex geometry. The periodic pattern is superimposed with four …
The Fragmentation Of Self Within The Indian Novel, Michele Gibney
The Fragmentation Of Self Within The Indian Novel, Michele Gibney
Michele Gibney
With the novel Midnight’s Children, Rushdie forged a new path for novel-writing. In his epic story the main character became split into two in order to show the many facets of Indian culture. Instead of gaining an understanding of just one way of life, the reader became privy to all the stories being lived in such places as the Methwold estates, the surreal Sundarbans, and the Magician’s Ghetto. The story of one, single individual was lost in the cacophony of voices that each had their own tale to tell in Rushdie’s novel. This new form of writing, which favored the …

A Review Of Shellfish Restoration As A Tool For Coastal Water Quality Management., Michael A. Rice
Michael A Rice
In many areas, coastal residents and others oppose establishment of bivalve molluscan aquaculture projects on the basis of perceived negative environmental impacts. Often overlooked are positive environmental impacts of shellfish aquaculture that can potentially mitigate the impacts of other anthropogenic activities. Filter feeding by populations of bivalve mollusks is reviewed with respect to their ability to act as an estuarine filter, increase clarity of coastal waters and facilitate the removal of nitrogen and other nutrients from eutrophic coastal waters. Most species of cultured bivalve mollusks clear particles from waters at rates of 1 to 4 L/h, and populations of shellfish …

The Principles Of Justice, In Symposium, Propter Honoris Respectum: John Finnis, Richard W. Wright

Many theorists claim that justice is a question-begging concept that has no inherent substantive content. They point to disagreements among justice theorists themselves about basic aspects of the justice theory, such as the nature of corrective justice and the distinction between it and distributive justice, as even further reason to dismiss the concept of justice or to fill it with their preferred theoretical content. Yet most persons perceive that the concept of justice is not an empty shell. Since ancient times it has been thought to encompass not merely a formal equality (treating like cases alike), but also a substantive …
Truth-Bonding And Other Truth-Revealing Mechanisms For Courts, Robert Cooter, Winand Emons
Truth-Bonding And Other Truth-Revealing Mechanisms For Courts, Robert Cooter, Winand Emons
Robert Cooter
In trials witnesses often gain by slanting their testimony. The law tries to elicit the truth from witnesses by cross-examination under threat of criminal prosecution for perjury. As a truth-revealing mechanism, perjury law is crude and ineffective. We develop the mathematical form of a perfect truth-revealing mechanism, which exactly offsets the gain from slanted testimony by the risk of a possible sanction. Implementing an effective truth-revealing mechanism requires a witness to certify accuracy by posting bond. If events subsequently prove that the testimony was inaccurate, the witness forfeits the bond. By providing superior incentives for telling the truth, truth-bonding could …
A Century Of Change In Personal Injury Law, Stephen D. Sugarman
A Century Of Change In Personal Injury Law, Stephen D. Sugarman
Stephen D Sugarman
The 20th century witnessed enormous change in American personal injury law. Over the past 100 years, torts has emerged out of a largely ineffective backwater of the law. Today, tort doctrine has coalesced around a robust law of negligence, anchored not only in contemporary concerns about fairness, but also in considerations of loss spreading and safety promotion. Over the course of the 20th century, cultural change, change in the legal and other professions, changes in civil procedure and evidence law, the development of liability insurance, and more have made it both much easier and far more natural for accident victims …

Multi-Diameter Vise Clamp And Collet Jaw, Lloyd D. Snell
Multi-Diameter Vise Clamp And Collet Jaw, Lloyd D. Snell
Lloyd D Snell
A machine vise has incorporated into it a pair of collet jaws that allows for the machining of top surfaces and ends of a held part. The collet jaws are secured to each of the clamping blocks on the machine vise. The collet jaws include at least one collet pocket shaped into the inside surface of each collet jaw. The collet pockets are designed to receive collet pads which are shaped to hold a generally cylindrical part with varying diameters. By having more than one collet pocket within each collet jaw, several different sizes of collet pads can be utilized …

A Feminist ‘Attack’ On Post-Structuralist And Psychoanalytical Readings Of Hamlet, Michele Gibney
A Feminist ‘Attack’ On Post-Structuralist And Psychoanalytical Readings Of Hamlet, Michele Gibney
Michele Gibney
This paper will do three things, the first of which will be to describe Jaqueline Rose’s argument within her essay, “Hamlet—The Mona Lisa of Literature.” The second task of this paper will be to explain what is at stake within Rose’s essay as it relates to previous criticism such as that of Irigaray, Freud, Woolf, and Derrida. Finally, by drawing upon the idea (in Rose’s paper) of femininity as a fetishisized concept that equals the opposite of “good” a correlation in opposition will be drawn between what she is trying to accomplish and what Freud argues in “The Theme of …
Covert Shells, John Christian Smith
Covert Shells, John Christian Smith

The potential for covert communications exist anywhere that legitimate communication channels are in use. In order to maintain control of the channel once exploited, the insertion of a backdoor Trojan horse server, to be used with a client that provides shell access, is often a necessary prerequisite to establishing and using a covert channel long term.
We discuss covert channel communications methods ranging from embedded channels to disguised protocols. What follows is a review of available covert shell tools. The underground, historical evolution of covert shells is reviewed, focusing on selected, available tools, which range from simple encapsulation methods to …

Goddess Of Death: The Pleasure Principle At Work In Shakespeare’S Texts, Michele Gibney
Goddess Of Death: The Pleasure Principle At Work In Shakespeare’S Texts, Michele Gibney
Michele Gibney
In the essay “The Theme of the Three Caskets,” Freud discusses man’s altering of a representation of death into one of love. This course of action is reminiscent of Nietzsche’s claim in Truth and Falsity in an Ultramoral Sense, where he claims that man invents truth to suit himself. Freud psychoanalyzes that man is altering reality out of a fear of his own mortality, while Nietzsche makes a similar claim by saying man does it out of a desire to live peacefully with others in a manner which preserves life.

Issues In Quantifying Variability From A Dynamical Systems Perspective, Joseph Hamill, William J. Mcdermott, Jeffrey M. Haddad
Joseph Hamill
Variability is a critical aspect of a dynamical systems analysis. Because there are a number of numerical techniques that can be used in such an analysis, the calculation of variability has several issues that must be addressed. The purpose of this paper is to present a variety of quantitative methods for investigating variability from a dynamical systems perspective. The paper is divided into two major sections covering discrete and continuous methods. Each of these sections is subdivided into two sections. Within discrete methods, we discuss, first, the calculation of the discrete relative phase from a time-series history of two parameters …

Resonance Line Scattering Polarization In Optically Thin Planar Equatorial Disks., Richard Ignace
Richard Ignace
This paper is the third in a series on the anisotropic scattering by optically thin resonance lines in extended stellar envelopes. Considered here is the polarization arising from resonance line scattering in equatorial disks. The shape of the polarized line profile is analytically derived under simplifying conditions of constant expansion or rotation for thin lines, with stellar occultation and finite star depolarization effects also included. The polarized profiles for the two cases are radically different. Moreover owing to the symmetries, rotation leads to profiles in both Qν and Uν, whereas only a Qν profile survives for …

Practical Design Considerations For Signal Conditioning Unit Interfaced With Multi-Point Snow Temperature Recording System, Raman K. Attri, B. K. Sharma, M. A. Shamshi
Raman K. Attri
Multi-point Temperature Measurement has always been very important aspect of physical instrumentation mainly in environmental and Industrial application. A multi-point temperature measurement system has been developed to measure temperature at different points simultaneously. This multi-channel system is designed specifically for measuring snow temperature at 28 different points in snow layers and this multi-point data is used in modeling of snow cover. The interfacing of such multi-channel system to Data acquisition system is one of the most critical design aspects, which affect the overall performance of the system. The temperature sensor system and Data Acquisition System may be working satisfactorily when …

The World Seduces Man. His Home Grounds Him., Michele Gibney

Between Untouchable and The Bachelor of Arts there is a world of difference in the basic situations of the main characters. One is an uneducated street sweeper and the other is a University graduate, and both have a different conception of the British. However, there is also a common thread that unites the two novels in the main characters concluding acceptance of the “home”/India over the “world”/England. Thus, although different values are assigned to the importance of British colonialism within the texts, in the end each novel comes to a stand wherein Indian culture is favored over the British.
Contradicting Theories Of Art By Nietzsche And Plato, Michele Gibney
Contradicting Theories Of Art By Nietzsche And Plato, Michele Gibney
Michele Gibney
Plato proposes that there are ultimate, pure forms created by God behind every object in the world. Nietzsche, in response to this, argues that not only is there a multitude of differences between each object that have been disregarded to keep the illusion of the ideal, but that man himself creates the ideals and not an omnipotent deity. For Plato, art imitates the imitations of the pure form: thus confusing mankind, hindering their path to finding the pure, and tying them to a reality that is an appearance only. But for Nietzsche, art can save man from reality by producing …
