Immunobiology Of Schistosomiasis, Clarence Lee, Mohamed A. Elhelu, Georgiana Aboko-Cole

Clarence Lee

Although malaria and hookworm disease appear to be on the decline, another dreaded parasitic disease-schistosomiasis-is on the increase. Presently, the number of infected individuals with schistosomes is estimated to be 250 million, and even though only a small proportion of them become sick and die, schistosomiasis remains a medical problem of great significance. The high incidence of infection of man with Schistosoma mansoni, Schistosoma japonicum or Schistosoma haematobium, as well as the chronic debilitating diseases produced, places these organisms among the world's most important infectious agents. This paper discusses the nature of immunity to schistosomiasis.

Measurement Of Color Preference In Goldfish Using A Negative Reinforcement Y-Maze Avoidance Procedure, Dominic Zerbolio Jan 1980

Measurement Of Color Preference In Goldfish Using A Negative Reinforcement Y-Maze Avoidance Procedure, Dominic Zerbolio

UMSL Emeritus

Using a Y-maze procedure involving shock reinforcement, goldfish were forced to choose between a red or a green cued arm of the maze. Although the 18 animals tested showed, as a group, an average green preference, equal numbers of animals showed individual green (6), red (6), and no-color (6) preferences. Differences between conclusions based on group means against individual performances are noted. In goldfish, at least, the shock-reinforced Y-maze procedure may represent a very useful technique for further color preference assessment.

The Theater In The South During The American Revolution, Jared Brown Dec 1979

The Theater In The South During The American Revolution, Jared Brown

Jared Brown

Although the performance of plays on American soil during the
period of the Revolution was strictly prohibited by a Congressional
resolution of 1774 (reinforced by a similar resolution passed in 1778),
numerous theatrical productions were given by British officers garrisoned or imprisoned in various American cities between 1775 and
1783. American officers countered with occasional productions of
their own, but Congress's will was scrupulously obeyed in the case of
professional American performers-until 1781, when a professional
theatrical troupe began giving a series of performances in various
Maryland cities. What follows is the history of the theater in the South
during …
